The Las Vegas Raiders hosted free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick for a workout this week. They did not sign him, and here is why.

The last time Colin Kaepernick played in a professional football game was in 2017 which ended in a narrow loss to the Seahawks.

The 49ers’ season ended with a record of 2-14 and the head coach and general manager were fired as a result.

It’s no secret that Kaepernick was released and never picked up by another team, partially due to his play, injuries, and obviously his public protests and subsequent lawsuit against the NFL.

Now six years later during the week of May 23, 2022, Kaepernick received a chance* at re-entering the league with a workout hosted by the Las Vegas Raiders.

A franchise known for taking chances on cast-away players and also as frontrunners in the social justice movement it was not a surprise that the Raiders were the first NFL team to give Kaepernick an opportunity.

However, while Kaepernick reportedly “impressed” the Raiders’ scouts and front office personnel he left the Vegas desert without a contract.

Here are a few (speculated) theories as to why.

Colin Kaepernick, the former quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, appears to be getting closer to his goal of returning to the NFL. The Nevada alumnus was able to secure a workout session with the Las Vegas Raiders after a series of desperate attempts to connect and participate in various public events.

The session turned out to be a success, giving the quarterback reason to be optimistic. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network recently made a bold statement about Kaepernick's chances of landing a contract.

Last Wednesday, he participated in a brief training session for the franchise, demonstrating his throwing abilities and toughness in front of the coaches.

Garafolo revealed during a recent conversation that the quarterback could sign a contract with the Raiders for the 2022 season. When asked about Kaepernick's status on the roster, he responded, "I'll say yes, and I think it may very well be the Raiders".

Garofalo also explained why the Raiders have not offered Kaepernick a contract yet. "The fact that they didn't tell him immediately is not necessarily an indication that they have moved on. It's more about let's see where this goes. Let's see our roster. Let's see where else he winds up working out there. That can be a factor as well, but I'll say yes, and likely in Las Vegas." he added.

Why is Kaepernick without a team in the NFL?

Colin Kaepernick protested racial injustice and police brutality by sitting during the national anthem during the 2016 preseason.

During the regular season, he began kneeling instead of sitting after consulting with a green beret who felt it was disrespectful to the anthem and those who had served for the country.

Many people believed Colin Kaepernick should be standing during the national anthem, and the compromise he reached was not good enough for them.

It became a source of bitter debate, culminating in 2017, when then-President Donald Trump referred to anyone kneeling during the national anthem as a "son of a bitch."

The San Francisco 49ers did not renew Colin Kaepernick's contract before the 2017 season, ostensibly because new coach Kyle Shanahan felt he would not fit in his offense.

He went the entire offseason without being signed by anyone, and he filed a grievance against the league for conspiring to keep him from being signed.

After a confidential settlement in 2019, the complaint was withdrawn. Since then, Colin Kaepernick has not played in the NFL.

Has Colin Kaepernick signed with the Raiders?

Colin Kaepernick worked out for the Raiders about two weeks ago, but no public decision has been made about his future in the NFL yet. The quarterback hasn't played in a professional game since 2016 after he began kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality and institutionalized racism in America.
