Emotions are mixed up I’m just saying I’ll do, I’ll do whatever Baby, I’ll do whatever I gotta do Cause I been drinking, I been smoking Thanks to Real Jefferson, Bria for correcting these lyrics.
Earlier this year, 23-year-old Los Angeles resident Jhene Aiko released the excellent Sailing Soul(s) mixtape, a 13-track collection of minimal love songs featuring her alluringly whispered vocals over sparse R&B. Do Better Blues Pt 2 (Marvin's Room) is the latest release to appear online and is another in a long line of "response songs". Who could forget F.U.R.B, Frankee's response to Eamon's charming Fuck It (I Don't Want You Back) released in 2004? Or, Sporty Thievz's complex No Pigeons, which offered a male viewpoint to the challenging gender politics of TLC's No Scrubs? The song receiving the response treatment here is Drake's drunken confessional Marvin's Room, which was released in June as a teaser for his forthcoming second album. In Aiko's version, the hook goes from "I'm just saying, you could do better" to "without you here I cannot do better", as her heavily treated vocal swirls around ghostly keyboards. It's not the first time Drake's original has been given the response treatment – former child star JoJo created the equally moody Marvin's Room (Can't Do Better) in June. |
