I just ordered a 2022 nx 350h. I know that we are supposed to use premium gas for the nx 350h. However, I've also heard reviews say that the engine is the same as the Rav4 hybrid, just with the stronger RX electric motor. If the engine is the same, why can't we use regular gas just like the rav4 hybrid does?

It's the rav4 engine with the more powerful RX electric motor so it just makes sense.

That is what minimum means. The ECU is tuned differently to the RAV4, where the expects the recommended RON.

You may use unleaded gasoline with octane rating of 87 (Research Octane Number of 91). In this case, engine performance may be decreased. Use of octane rating unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than 87 may result in engine knocking. Persistent knocking can lead to engine damage." So it looks like premium is not required.

Join Date: Apr 2015 Location: Ontario Posts: 540 I would stick with premium. Yes premium is more expensive and it's expected when you buy a Lexus. Degrade performance and possible engine damage could in fact cost more if it happens. It also depends on how much you drive and how frequent you fill up. Also if you are leasing the car, sure regular gas shouldn't matter much... Just leave it to the next owner to deal with.

The question here is not if it can run on lower octane. Of course it can. The question is what it should run on to get the optimal performance. And the answer is premium. No discussion thread is going to change what is published by Lexus. If one wants to run on regular, buy a RAV4 hybrid and not an NX350h. Last edited by 703; 03-26-22 at 09:31 PM.

Actually, tuning for premium is a misnomer misunderstood by most. The tuning for "premium" merely consists of a higher compression ratio which in some cases can cause engine pinging or knocking under strong acceleration. Premium gas has an additive to prevent premature gas detonation; ie. pinging. If you run regular gas and your car never pings, then you are wasting money paying for mid-grade or premium gas instead of regular. You will not be able to find any definitive tests that show premium gas provides better performance than regular gas because it doesn't In the past premium and regular and before that leaded and unleaded were all being touted as increased performance. They tried to run tests to compare and the results were not definitive, so most car mags gave up on the comparison. Use regular and enjoy the savings on a nice steak dinner. Tell me about the "reduced performance" and the "increased emission". I have not seen anything definitive on either. Some car manuals tout premium as better performance but I am not sure because I don't recall any comparison tests actually proving premium is better.
