Does Lexus NX 350h require premium gas?

Does Lexus NX 350h require premium gas?

When it is time to fill up your vehicle’s tank, making sure you choose the right gas is a way of ensuring your vehicle runs smoothly and efficiently while on the road. If you currently drive a 2022 Lexus NX, the luxury SUV requires premium gas with an octane rating of 91 or higher.

When your Lexus SUV is fueled with correct gas, not only are you sustaining its superior engine, but also allows you to reach your destination with ease. Here at Lexus of Bridgewater, we explain the importance of pumping premium gas into your Lexus NX.

What is the Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas?

The main difference between premium and regular gas is their octane levels and how they affect your vehicle’s engine. Regular gas is rated at 87 octanes which are standard for most vehicles. Premium gas is often rated higher at 91 or 93 and maybe also labeled as “ultra” or “super-premium” gas.

What Happens if I Put Regular Gas in a Vehicle Requires Premium Gas?

Using lower octane fuel in a vehicle that requires premium gas could cause internal damage, especially within a luxury vehicle like the Lexus NX. Some issues you may start experiencing include:

  • Reduction in fuel economy
  • Decreased power performance
  • High-pitched pinging or rattling noise

In more serious cases where you continually use lower octane fuel in your premium fuel-required engine, combustion produced from this error can cause over-heating and irreversible damage to your engine.

Our Lexus service center is here to provide you with any and all repairs, inspections, or replacements for the Lexus NX engine.

Default Regular gas 350h

I just ordered a 2022 nx 350h. I know that we are supposed to use premium gas for the nx 350h. However, I've also heard reviews say that the engine is the same as the Rav4 hybrid, just with the stronger RX electric motor. If the engine is the same, why can't we use regular gas just like the rav4 hybrid does?

Per the NX 350H manual, premium is recommended, not required. For the NX 350, premium is required.

Incorrect. RON 95 is required (Premium).

explain how my comment was incorrect. Here is a screenshot right from the PDF manual which says premium is recommended but 87 is the minimum which is regular gas

I downloaded the manual. You are right it can take 87 gas. It's the rav4 engine with the more powerful RX electric motor so it just makes sense.

You need to read the fine prints, regular will give you reduced performance and should only be used when premium is not available. That is what minimum means.

The ECU is tuned differently to the RAV4, where the expects the recommended RON.

The fine print, on page 724 of the owner's manual, states:

"Recommended to use premium unleaded gasoline with octane rating of 91 (Research Octane Number of 96) or higher for optimum engine performance. You may use unleaded gasoline with octane rating of 87 (Research Octane Number of 91). In this case, engine performance may be decreased.

Use of octane rating unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than 87 may result in engine knocking. Persistent knocking can lead to engine damage."

So it looks like premium is not required.

You can use 87 octane. I am leaning towards using 87 when my 350h arrives

I would stick with premium. Yes premium is more expensive and it's expected when you buy a Lexus. Degrade performance and possible engine damage could in fact cost more if it happens.

It also depends on how much you drive and how frequent you fill up. Also if you are leasing the car, sure regular gas shouldn't matter much... Just leave it to the next owner to deal with.

Not required on Lexis 2022 NX 350h, regular will work fine. This has already been discussed ad Infinitum.

It is tuned for premium. The US user manual is written poorly and confusing people. Other countries user manual is much more clear.

The question here is not if it can run on lower octane. Of course it can.

The question is what it should run on to get the optimal performance. And the answer is premium. No discussion thread is going to change what is published by Lexus. If one wants to run on regular, buy a RAV4 hybrid and not an NX350h.

So you want to spend $$ on a new NX350h just to give it reduced performance and increased emission?

As someone once said when I had a similar question on reg. vs premium for my 2010 RX 450h. You pay good money for a quality hybrid. Why worry about a few dollars more at fill up.

Actually, tuning for premium is a misnomer misunderstood by most. The tuning for "premium" merely consists of a higher compression ratio which in some cases can cause engine pinging or knocking under strong acceleration. Premium gas has an additive to prevent premature gas detonation; ie. pinging. If you run regular gas and your car never pings, then you are wasting money paying for mid-grade or premium gas instead of regular. You will not be able to find any definitive tests that show premium gas provides better performance than regular gas because it doesn't In the past premium and regular and before that leaded and unleaded were all being touted as increased performance. They tried to run tests to compare and the results were not definitive, so most car mags gave up on the comparison.

Use regular and enjoy the savings on a nice steak dinner.

YMMV,
MidCow3

Tell me about the "reduced performance" and the "increased emission". I have not seen anything definitive on either. Some car manuals tout premium as better performance but I am not sure because I don't recall any comparison tests actually proving premium is better. Do have any references to such performance tests that you could share? Same with Increase emissions. Thanks in advance @703

YMMV,

Does Lexus NX 350h need premium gas?

When it is time to fill up your vehicle's tank, making sure you choose the right gas is a way of ensuring your vehicle runs smoothly and efficiently while on the road. If you currently drive a 2022 Lexus NX, the luxury SUV requires premium gas with an octane rating of 91 or higher.

Does NX hybrid need premium gas?

The Lexus NX and the IS, GS, and LS use a rating of 91 octanes, meaning premium fuel is required. Using regular fuel can result in engine damage and costly repairs.

Do Lexus hybrids use premium gas?

Do I Need to Put Premium Gas in the RX? You must only use unleaded gasoline in the RX, with an octane rating of 87 or higher. This means the Lexus RX does not require premium gasoline, as the premium octane rating is 91 or higher.

Which Lexus does not require premium gas?

While the 2020 Lexus RX 350 is a pristine luxury vehicle, it is also surprising in its fuel economy. It delivers premium performance but does not require premium gas. All options have a recommended 87 octane for fuel.
