Dog travels 100 km to bite owner

The claim: A dog traveled 100 kilometers to bite its owner after being abandoned

Man's best friend has been known for some pretty amazing accomplishments, like Laika, a stray Moscow pup who became one of the first living creatures to orbit Earth.

Feats of exploration aside, would our friendly canine companions go as far as seeking revenge? So claim some on social media.

"Dog travels more than 100 km to bite its owner after being abandoned," reads a graphic shared in a July 18 Facebook post, which has more than 1,000 interactions.

"Good for the dog hope he finds a forever home," commented one Facebook user.

"I love this wonderful dog and would love to own such a hero dog!" said another.

An abandoned pet getting retribution against a negligent owner makes for a unique story. But there's one problem: the tale is entirely fictitious.

USA TODAY has reached out to the poster for comment.

Story originally published on a humor and satire website

Dogs have traveled great distances to reunite with their owners. In 1924, Bobbie the Wonder Dog trekked over 2,800 miles from Indiana to Silverton, Oregon, where his owners lived.

Dog travels 100 km to bite owner

If you have been active on social media these past few years, there is a high possibility you might have come across the screenshot of a news report claiming that a dog travelled more than 100 km to bite its owner after being abandoned.

According to the full news report, a Mexican man named Santiago Martinez had left his dog, a golden retriever, behind and travelled on a beach getaway. The pained dog decided to go in search of its owner, travelling over 100 km in nine days to finally find the master having fun at the beach.

Santiago who was already feeling guilty that he had left his dog behind ran to embrace his pet. But the dog was not having it. The news report goes – “when the dog was in his arms, it didn’t hesitate and it bit him hard”. Santiago screamed so loud from the pain of the dog bite that it was heard in the Grand Canyon National Park, the report said.

The dog left Santiago in his pain and tears and turned to head back home. The dog was later adopted by “a wonderful family” who clearly deserved it while Santiago was busy receiving treatment for his wound.

What a beautiful story with a happy ending, you must think – only that it did not happen.

The story about a dog travelling 100 km to bite its owner after being abandoned is FALSE. The story was first reported in 2018 by a humour website called thereisnews.com.

What causes a dog to bite his owner?

There are multiple reasons that a dog may exhibit aggression toward family members. The most common causes include conflict aggression, fear-based, defensive aggression, status related aggression, possessive aggression, food guarding aggression and redirected aggression.

Is it normal for a dog to bite its owner?

Biting behaviors are almost always indicative of stressors affecting your canine, which means that this behavior shouldn't ever be encouraged. Pain-based biting is incredibly common across all breeds. If your dog has been injured and you're tending to his wounds, it is quite common for them to bite.

What to do if dog tries to bite owner?

Ignore him for 30 to 60 seconds. If your dog follows you or continues to bite and nip at you, leave the room for 30 to 60 seconds. (Be sure that the room is “dog-proofed” before you leave your dog alone in it. Don't leave him in an area with things he might destroy or things that might hurt him.)

What happens if you dog bites a person?

Dog or cat bites are usually minor, but infections can occur if the skin is broken and bacteria from the saliva (spit) of the animal enter your bloodstream. To avoid developing tetanus, seek medical advice immediately if you are bitten and the skin is broken.
