Every parent asks at least once, “do I really need to do a rectal reading?” No one likes to use rectal thermometers, but the fact of the matter is that according to the American Associates of Pediatrics, “Temperatures taken rectally or orally are more accurate than those obtained using the axillary or tympanic methods. If your child is younger than 3 years old, a rectal temperature gives the best reading.”

So rectal is the way to go for children under three years old. This is for a variety of reasons, but one of the main ones why rectal is preferred over oral for younger children is that oral readings can only be accurate if they are held under the tongue. I don’t know about you, but brushing my kid’s teeth is a nightmare enough to know that that would not go well.

You can always take temperature under the armpit, but that will not be nearly as accurate. When you are nervous about your child’s temperature, every degree counts. You know that if you use a Frida Baby Quick Read Digital Rectal Thermometer that you will get an accurate reading because it will hold firmly in place, surrounded by tissue.

Quick Read

When you are taking your baby’s temperature on any part of their body, but especially rectally, you want as quick a read as possible. Even taking temperature under my baby’s armpit can make them cranky if they are sick enough. The Frida Baby Quick Read Digital Rectal Thermometer gets an accurate read in 10 seconds, which is pretty darn quick!

Digital

Another great thing about the Frida Baby rectal thermometer is that it is completely digital. There may be some mercury-filled thermometers still floating around in some old bathroom cabinets, but the AAP does not recommend these to be used in household settings. Mercury is poisonous and glass is way too easy to break, especially rectally. Digital is the way to go and it gives you a much more accurate read than any mercury thermometer would.

Backlit

You might have to be magic to be able to take a rectal temperature without waking up your baby, but if you happen to be able to do this, then the backlit feature is your best friend. It is awful when your baby is sick and even if they are sleeping, you likely are wondering about them all night long. If you can’t sleep and you need to get a temperature check in the middle of the night, you can do this without having to turn on any lights and risk waking your child out of their slumber. The backlit feature is absolutely necessary.

Stopper

Fridababy quick-read digital rectal thermometer reviews
If you’ve never done a rectal reading before, it is natural to be pretty nervous. Luckily, Frida Baby thought of that and made their rectal thermometer with a stopper. Your baby won’t be injured because you assumed their rectum was larger than it actually is. You will know the exact point to put it in because the stopper will tell you.

Carrying Case

Babies come with a lot of accessories, and many of them are small. Things can get lost very easily in diaper bags and purses, and a carrying case makes your baby’s thermometer just big enough that you will be able to find it more easily when you are digging around. It also protects your thermometer from spills or from being turned on by your little one and draining the battery.

How To Use It

The Frida Baby Quick Read Digital Rectal thermometer couldn’t be easier to use. Here are the simple steps to use it:

  1. Prep baby by undoing diaper.
  2. Turn the thermometer on.
  3. Lift your baby’s legs slightly and insert the rectal thermometer.
  4. Wait 10 seconds or until you hear a beep.
  5. Take the thermometer out and read it.

It’s as simple as that! And you can feel secure knowing that you have the very most accurate read that you possibly could with your baby. The no-touch thermometers seem nice, and they are much easier to use, but if you are looking for accuracy, which most people are when they have a sick baby, rectal is the way to go.

How To Clean

Fridababy quick-read digital rectal thermometer reviews
The thermometer is very simple to clean as well, though you do want to make sure that you do it thoroughly. Frida Baby recommends using warm soapy water to clean your thermometer after use. You can also use an alcohol wipe to make sure all the germs are dead.

For me, personally, I would wash it and then use the alcohol wipe after. But maybe I’m a germ freak. The nice thing about this thermometer is that it is only for rectal use, so you know you’re never going to get it mixed up with an oral thermometer that you would use. That is the one downside I have with the Frida Baby 3 in 1 True Temp thermometer that I wrote a review of here. But if you feel confident in soap and alcohol, then that might not be an issue for you!

Conclusion

Ultimately, the Frida Baby Quick Read Digital Rectal Thermometer is an essential tool for every new parent. In fact, you should have one before you bring your baby home from the hospital. Babies have fevers so frequently with their weak immune systems and their constant teething. It can be a roller coaster of emotions for both you and baby. But you can have peace of mind that you are keeping an accurate eye on all the things that are going on with your baby’s body.
