However, the drive is what makes the difference. A person would be hard pressed to find a more picturesque drive. The road runs along the Colorado River at various elevations completely enframed by high, redrock cliffs. This is a photographer's dream with natural beauty, rafters on the river, and wildlife. Since the sun's angles are always changing, no two drives are ever the same. Goatesians Loveland, Colorado Reviewed 1 July 2013 Most detours have a negative connotation, but if you are traveling West and headed for Moab, don't fail to take the scenic route via Hwy 128. This highway follows the Colorado River and provides some spectacular views of red cliffs and the Colorado River. If you are traveling West on the Interstate, take the SECOND exit that is marked Cisco. Now Cisco is not a place, only a concept, but you will backtrack East, but don't be alarmed, just follow the Hwy. 128 signs and you soon will be in for some stunning visuals. Be prepared to stop often and have your camera ready. Treats along the way include the remnants of the Dewey Bridge and the Red Cliffs Resort (Mile Marker 14). You will see a lot of activity on the River as it will be filled with rafters and tubers. NOTE: There is construction near Moab where they are constructing a bike lane. There are two stop lights on the highway for one lane traffic, so expect some short delays. It tracks the Colorado River through a deep gorge with steep walls of red sandstone. Residents of Moab call it “the river road” and the first 20 miles are incredibly scenic. The soaring red cliffs are breathtaking. Campgrounds and boat docks are located along the road in an area called Big Bend and the road narrows in places with blind corners and no shoulders. You’d think the Grand Canyon would be enough of a creation for any one river, but the Colorado leaves an indelible mark wherever it flows. On this trip, I started at the source of the river in the Rockies and followed it to Page, Arizona by way of Moab, Utah. The landscape around the river has always been jaw-droppingly spectacular, highway 128 being but one example.
