Hatfield 12 gauge semi auto walmart reviews

I've wanted a standard (non-detachable mag fed) semi-auto 12ga. for a while now.  Today at Wal-Mart I saw they had Hatfield 12ga semi-auto's for $226.  Had a walnut stock (I'd prefer synthetic) and the barrel might need a chopping as I'm not a huge fan of the 28" barrels for range fun and  defense.

Has anyone tried this brand/model?  Any good?

Thanks

Saw that and thought it'd make a good backup or loaner gun for dove season. I'll get one in 20ga if I see one. My $200 Wal-Mart Charles Daly has been a great cheapo hunting shotgun as well.

That's because people are cheap fucks....    Why buy a Beretta A400 when this dogshit gun for 1/5 the price will do the same thing.

Cheap guns sell....   Expensive quality guns sit until someone comes looking for them.

I bought one a couple weeks ago for my GF to use during dove season. I haven't shot it yet, but it seems like a decent shotgun. The bolt design is similar to my old Beretta 303, so at least it seems solid in that respect. I can tell you, though, that this thing is made out of pot metal. I don't know if you're looking for something of good quality, but I suspect after several hundred rounds this thing is really going to start showing some serious wear.

They're imported from Turkey and distributed by UTAS here in the US, and they seem to have decent customer service.

How can you tell it's pot metal?  I saw a plastic/textured trigger guard but the receiver looked like standard aluminum and the barrel blued steel.

Not a ton of info online about these.  ZERO youtube vids on them.  On Google, 95% of people that own them seem to love them.  But there are a few duds that needed repairs.  Seems like they have good customer service.

Most of the talk on them is bashing and comes from people that have no direct experience with them.  Kinda what comes with the territory for anything inexpensive in the gun world.

That thing looks funtionally identical to the HR Auto Excell, also made in turkey. I have that one, and for the price it's been great. Simple and clunky, but shucks shells just fine.

That is pretty odd.  Can't find a website for Hatfield.  And it seems like the only people buying them are doing so at Wal-Mart.  I'm wondering if Walmart did with "Hatfield" what Cabela's did with "Herters".  In other words buy the name and have the company make a shit ton of them to sell cheaply.

I picked one of these up about a month ago. It is marked SAS on the receiver and imported from Turkey by UTAS I believe. Fit an finish is decent but nowhere near my Franchi(which I didnt expect it to be). It balances ok and actually points pretty nicely. I ran everything from #7.5 birdshot to 3" 00 buckshot and it performed flawlessly. It comes with 3 chokes and an additional forend lug for heavy loads. I'd say I have a total of about 150 rounds through it so far. Time will tell with this one

I got this basically as a beater gun. Clay pigeon shooting and the occasional dove hunting. I think it will hold up just fine for that purpose

From what I've found just poking around, most of the Turkish guns are very similar in design, just tweaked a little from brand to brand. I assume most are made in the same factory and just badged for whatever importer made the order.

Hmm. Maybe I got lucky, or you did not lol. I've had mine for going on 12 years. 3" Field model. I've shot the shit out of it. Used it for a beater duck gun when I still lived in Ohio. It was the grim reaper for rabbit, woodcock and pheasant. Took it through high round count days of dove hunting and a metric fuckton of clays. Besides 22s, it's probably #1 for highest round count of every gun I own.

....But I have one of the Hatfields.

Seems pretty decent.  Nothing about it says flimsy or crude.

A couple of observations though.  No sling mounts.  I don't have many wood stocked guns and have never screwed in swivels so hopefully that's not a big deal.  Also no way of taking the stock off that I can see.  There are two holes punched through the rubber butt pad that I'm assuming are screw holes.  I could try shoving a screwdriver in there fishing around for some screws.  But other than that, no screws or bolt visible anywhere on the stock to take it off.

Not a huge fan of the front site.  It's okay and does the job but I'd prefer a brass bead.

Other than that, this thing seems like a massive deal for what I got.  I'll report back after I put some rounds through it.

Feel free to ask any questions.

So.....problem!

The mag won't load 4 rounds unless I loosen the forend cap.  Then it leaves the forend slightly loose.  If I tighten it too much after loading 4 rounds in the mag it'll shoot a round out of the mag onto the elevator.

I'm thinking the plastic end cap that holds the spring in is too long and needs to be filed down some.  But I'm going to write the company and see what they say.  I'll keep the thread updated with the progress.

or academy with Yildiz, i wonder if they're made by the same folks in turkey.  only place you can get those turkish field guns.  fwiw, their O/U beat the next best gun on price by a few hundo. they're not steel, some kind of lightweight alloy, and don't have a great recoil pad on the stock so the felt recoil is more than you'll have with most others.

It doesn't have the field plug in does it?

Nope took that out.

that's odd..

out of the dozens of shotguns I own and have shot, the Charles Daly Youth 20 was the shittiest firearm I ever bought and the only one where I got so disgusted on a duck hunt that I drove immediately to Academy when I got to town and went inside, nasty and swampy and bought him a 870 youth. I'm staring at the piece of shit right now, because in good conscious and being decent person I cannot bring my self to sell or give it away on an unsuspecting soul. ( I had that gun worked over 3 different types by a very competent gunsmith at one of their warranty service units).

how bad does a gun have to be when you realize it would be wrong in the eyes of God to sell it or give it away to an unsuspecting human being?

Saw that and thought it'd make a good backup or loaner gun for dove season. I'll get one in 20ga if I see one. My $200 Wal-Mart Charles Daly has been a great cheapo hunting shotgun as well.

Well next time your town has a gun buy back get yourself a gift card, you know it will be scrapped that way.

....But I have one of the Hatfields.

There are screws inside those holes, usually Phillips heads. Once you get the recoil pad off if you look down inside the stock there should be a bolt or large screw that holds the stock on the receiver extension. Screwing sling studs in the stock isn't that big of a deal, they make a jig so you get the hole drilled in the center of the stock but since this is a beater gun you could just do it free hand and if you're steady you should be able to get it close. For the front you can either get a barrel band or drill a hole in the end of the mag cap and put the stud in there.

"Franchi" as a brand for setting a quality standard has been worthless for three decades.  An old Franchi shotgun is one thing, but the variety of guns imported and then sold as "Franchi" is a completely unreliable indicator, although as time passes it converges on "junk".

What makes you believe the magazine holds four rounds?  What length ammunition are you loading?

I looked at one-Turkish made, looks like the Khan shotguns that were available a few years ago with a new name on it. Friend of mine has a 3 1/2" Khan, uses it and likes it. For $225 shoot the fucker for one trip and sell it a week later if you don't like it.

ETA-they also offer a single shot for $99. Based on the location of the hinge it looks like it's fully foldable.

2 3/4" which clearly says something wrong because this gun can handle 3" as well.

In all my Mossy's when the tube is full, there's plenty of room left over which is basically to account for 3" shells.  And even when loaded with 3" shells, there is still about 1/4" of give.

Personally, I think it has to do with the little plastic cap on the end of the mag tube holding the spring/follower in.  I think the petals on that piece might be binding up the spring and not letting it compress correctly.

Does Hatfield make good shotguns?

Fit, finish, wood quality, function (after the break-in period) were well above par for its price, and our test sample was a good-fitting, decent-handling semi-automatic that would be suitable for upland birds, ducks or clay games—and might also make a fine behind-the-seat gun as well.

Who is Hatfield shotguns made by?

The shotgun is called the Hatfield Uplander and is made in St. Joseph, Mo., by Hatfield Rifle Works, which has just six employees.

Where is Hatfield made?

Hatfield Gun Copmany (HGC) is a shotgun manufacture located in Des Plaines, IL. HGC has a rich tradition of manufacturing high quality firearms that incorporate beautiful walnut, casehardening & rust blueing (previously found only on hand-built custome guns).

How many shells does a Hatfield 12 gauge hold?
