Specifications are often supplied by manufacturers that detail specific mounting tools, materials and methods recommended for anchoring their products. Follow these guidelines whenever possible. Choose the correct size and length of toggle bolts to carry the intended load. Websites like Toggle.com can help calculate the correct size and length.

Warning

Make sure that there are no electric wires in the area where drilling into the wall occurs. Always wear safety glasses when drilling into metal studs to protect from flying metal fragments.

Using toggle bolts is a common way to anchor heavy objects into steel studs. Some prior knowledge of the existing materials -- thickness of the drywall, gauge of metal studs and spacing of metal studs -- will aid in determining the best mounting methods. For best results, heavy objects should be mounted to as many metal studs as possible so that the weight will be evenly distributed. Knowing the weight of the object to be mounted will aid in determining the number and size of the toggle bolts needed to complete the task.

Video of the Day

Step 1

Use the stud finder to locate the studs where you will be mounting the object. Mark the wall with a pencil to indicate their location. Metal studs for interior non-load-bearing walls are usually 1 5/8 inches wide, so try to put your marks in the center of the stud.

Step 2

Measure up the wall with the tape measure to the height where the object will be mounted. Mark that spot with the pencil.

Step 3

Center the mounting bracket on the marks on the wall. With a pencil, mark through the holes in the mounting bracket where the toggle bolts will go. Make sure that the bracket is level and centered on the studs before marking.

Step 4

Drill holes in the wall and through the metal studs where you marked the wall with the mounting bracket. The size of the drill bit should be large enough to allow the toggle bolt to gain access through the hole. Check the toggle bolt manufacturer's recommended bit size.

Step 5

Attach the mounting bracket to the wall using the toggle bolts. Slide the toggle bolt through the hole and pull securely to the metal stud. Screw each bolt so that it's snug, but not tight to the bracket. Once all the bolts are secure, check to make sure the bracket is level before tightening the bolts fully. If level, tighten the toggle bolts completely.

SNAPTOGGLE® anchors get their name from their speed and ease of use as they work in a SNAP! Unlike other anchors, this system does not require the bolt or the bracket for initial installation. Simply drill a 1/2" 12mm hole and insert the metal head, then zip tight and its held in place. New longer and stronger plastic straps that work in base materials 10mm to 90mm thick. Excess straps made to snap-off flush with the wall every time, assuring precise alignment. You are now ready to attach the fixture with 1/4" bolts to length required (sold separate). Exceeds most building requirements supporting inexcess of 100Kg per bolt (depends on wall). Made from premium grade materials in the USA for reliable long-life corrosion resistant service . Strong enough for grab-bars, shelving, mirrors, drapes, curtains, fans, and flat-screen TVs.

  • Pre-assembled and ready for immediate use
  • Pre-installs without requiring fixture or bolt
  • Far superior to wing toggles, holds twice the load
  • Trivalent B633-85 III/Sc zinc plating RoHS compliant
  • Automatically adjusts to thickness of wall or ceiling
  • Plastic straps suit Wall thickness; 10mm to 90mm
  • Holding weight: Drywall 12mm 120Kg, 16mm 160Kg
  • Pre-drill hole = 1/2" 12mm (smaller than springwing)

Can I use toggle bolts on metal studs?

Wooden stud installations use lag bolts that screw directly into the stud while metal stud installations require hardware such as toggle bolts, drill toggle, or snap toggles to secure into the metal stud.

How much weight can a toggle bolt hold in metal studs?

Toggle Bolt Sizing The thicker the bolt, the more weight it can support. A 1/8-inch toggle bolt can hold the least amount of weight. Mounted onto 3/8-inch wallboard, it can support up to 30 pounds. On 3/4-inch wallboard, it can support up to 55 pounds.

How do you anchor heavy objects to metal studs?

In order to hang items that need more support, it is possible to drill through metal studs. Titanium or cobalt drill bits are best suited for boring through metal. Once you've drilled your pilot holes, you'll want to use a toggle bolt to safely secure heavy items to the metal stud.
