Here I am, Here I remain tattoo

Fresh ink of my tattoo artist's take on the Atreides hawk with motto in a scifi-ey font. 30th present to myself. Been waiting for money/time/etc to align for a few years, then scheduled the appointment to design it. Ended up almost dying in a cold river last week, so the motto felt even more appropriate.

Edit: apparently I don't know how to Reddit. Sorry, here's the link.

The spice must flow! And for tattoo lovers out there, so must the ink! If you love Frank Herbert's novel Dune or its movie adaptations, then you'll love these tattoos that mark out fans like stained lips show Mentats.

This one pictured above was inked by Joey of Bombshell Tattoo in Houston, Texas on the arm of Clint. It shows a sandworm rising up from the Arrakeen desert.

Dana picked up this beautiful Dune montage at the Salt Lake Tattoo Convention. It won second place in the sleeve category.

This beautiful body of text was inked by Matty Nox, an artist that we've featured previously. It shows the famous Litany against Fear:

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

I'm particularly taken with this sleeve by Andrey Grimmy3D Barkov. It shows a grand landscape of Arrakis, a rising sandworm, and an all-seeing Fremen eye. Perhaps it's the eye of Maud'Dib himself.

Mylooz is a tattoo artist in Montreuil, France. She inked this puzzling piece with a sandworm. What does it mean?

Do we have wormsign? You bet we do! Kelvin inked this knee (warning: NSFW URL) showing the terrifying, gaping maw of a sandworm.

Ride the sandworm to prove your readiness. Or this leg, if you can't get to Arrakis. Unfortunately, I don't know who owns the leg or inked the lovely tattoo on it.

Remco Tieleman affirmed his loyalty to House Atreides with this enormous back image. It shows the Atreides family crest, the larger of Arrakis's 2 moons, 2 sandworms, a host of Fremen, and the words "the sleeper must awaken."

Kevin also stands with House Atreides. He got this back tattoo of that family's crest at The Lazy Dragon in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

dvdhwk, a member of a forum dedicated to the Dune novels, post his arm tattoo. It shows the Atreides family crest and the words "Here I am; Here I remain" in classical Greek.

Brian Eschbach, a member of the metal band The Black Dahlia Murder, is a hardcore Dune fan. He's read all of the novels. His sleeve tattoo is an impressive homage to the series. Here's a video of Eschbach showing it off.

I believe I have posted this on Arrakeen at one point...

Any one want to try their hand, and drawing my next tattoo?

Here I am, Here I remain tattoo

I would like to get a mouse behind my ear. (Kinda curving with/towards my right ear. With the head, at the bottom of my ear, tail at the top...Nothing cartoonie.)

Any takers?

And the only one I would consider getting (do it right, or don't do it). 'Unfortunately' the laws were changed since, and I neither were, am or am planning to be a US citizen, BUT - when that tattoo was inked, it effectively made the recipient a piece of munition under US law.

No amount of flames, skulls, pentagrams or umlauts will ever come close to that!

We should've kept it labelled as a munition and then broke out the second amendment a la xkcd

That is a pretty cool tattoo. Reminds me of when my old drummer got his black belt, he apparently became legally considered a deadly weapon. No joke. He had to be really careful that any fight he ever got in he had witnesses that would state that it was self defense, because if he punches someone he gets charged with assault with a deaply weapon, not just assault. How badass is that?

Yeah. Unfortunately they got a wealth of shit mixed in there as well.

Any road followed precisely to its end leads precisely nowhere. You must climb the mountain just a little—enough to test that it's a mountain, enough to see where the other mountains are. From the top of any mountain, you cannot see that mountain.
Empress Herade, consort to Crown Prince Raphael Corrino
(Dune: House Corrino)

What had the Lady Jessica to sustain her in her time of trial? Think you carefully on this Bene Gesserit proverb and perhaps you will see: "Any road followed precisely to its end leads precisely nowhere. Climb the mountain just a little bit to test that it's a mountain. From the top of the mountain, you cannot see the mountain."
—from "Muad'Dib: Family Commentaries" by the Princess Irulan

The hacks plagiarized Frank Herbert, the brainless dumbos!

When Siona and Leto II are on the desert she asks "Is this as good a direction as any other?" -"As long as you keep to it", answered Leto II.

I'm not sure plagiarism is the right word for it. (Brian owns the copyrights after all.

Here I am, Here I remain tattoo
) And in point of fact it's nastier:

What Frank Herbert called a "Bene Gesserit proverb", they attribute to the consort of a Corrino "Crown Prince"—both characters, no doubt, of their own creation. (In terms of protocol, I seriously doubt it would be correct for the consort to be referred to as an "empress" when the man himself never took the Imperial Crown. Just more stupid shit.

Here I am, Here I remain tattoo
)

Their changes to the wording is also stupid: Even if the consort herself was not BG, the BG would remember and pass on her words exactly.

Asshat hack.

after more thought on the subject. the only true dune image is the sandworm. I reecomend a sandworm tat.

I am a turd. Do not emulate me, or Omphalos shall mock you as well.

What did Leto mean by here I am here I remain?

1 “Here I Am, Here I Remain.” - Duke Leto Atreides He's the type of man for whom duty is more important than anything else, and that includes his own life. He will stay true until his own life is over.

What were Leto's last words?

Leto's dying words in the film are, "Here I am, here I remain." In the books, these words are proclaimed by Leto upon his arrival on Arrakis.

How old is Duke Leto?

Duke Leto Atreides Perhaps mid-to-late 40s in the film, he seems a few years older than the Lady Jessica, whom he won't marry although he loves her very much. The age difference between the two is fairly accurate to the book although the book seems to describe him as even older, perhaps between 50 and 60 years old.
