How big should buds be at 6 weeks

We are now in Week 6 of the flowering stage. Here are the new developments we will dive into:

  • Buds are getting bigger
  • No vegetative growth at all
  • Only maturity growth at this point

In this episode of A Week-by-Week Guide to Flowering Cannabis Indoors, we are on Day 38 of the flowering period. Both plants, our Apple Tartz #7 pheno, and our Platinum Silk, are coming along quite nicely.

Changes from Week 5 to Week 6

The biggest changes that you will witness in the sixth week of flowering is the amount of weight that has been added to the buds. Your buds in Week 6 will be noticeably bigger than they were in Week 5.

At this point, these plants are deep into flower, and are really maturing day by day. You will notice that the colas are filling our.

You will notice that, across all the plants in the room, the only real growth that has occurred is in the actual buds. There is minimal to zero growth in the fan leaves, because at this stage, these plants are only focused on “maturity growth,” i.e. growth of the actual nugs. These plants are done with vegetative growth and are only deepening in their bud growth.

Plants will vary in their growth patterns, some grow quicker and some not until the end.

Take a look at our Platinum Silk and see how thick it has become. Just a week ago, it was much smaller.

As we explained in our Week 5 video, Platinum Silk had a very typical bud size for Week 5. But at Week 6, it is a bit on the advanced size, meaning it is now slightly bigger than the average plant in Week 6. These plants do not grow evenly every day. They have growth spurts, and Platinum Silk has definitely had a growth spurt in the sixth week

By contrast, Apple Tartz is like the little engine that could, taking a much more even pace. Our Apple Tartz pheno usually puts on most of its size at the end toward the finish.

The Maturity Growth in Week 6 provides Confidence to the Grower

We like this time in the flowering stage. You’ve spent a month and a half of flowering, but now the end is finally in site. You can see the results coming to fruition. And the plants are getting prettier by the day. Seeing this maturity growth is a real assurance to the grower that things are heading in the right direction.

It is a real confidence boost to have made it this far. It is hard not to smile when you are in a flowering room with plants that are six weeks into bloom. This is a great time to play some music, get in touch with your plants, listen to them and just be with them.

The most wonderful part of the sixth week and subsequent weeks is that you get to just vibe with the plants. Play some tunes, jam out, smile, laugh, and treasure your living plants. You only have so much time left with them before harvest. So enjoy these flowers in bloom!

Things continue to heat up in Week 7!

Well that concludes are look at Week 6. The plants are deep into flower, all vegetative growth has ceased, and the only part getting bigger are the giant fat colas! Next week, we will get to see these plants inch closer to the finish line, and we will also see the beginnings of some real color expression. Join us as we continue on into Week 7!

I've heard that the buds really swell in the last 2-3 weeks of flowering. My buds look good, but not too big yet. They are just entering week 6 of flowering and are 8-10 weeks. Can I expect a lot more growth or am I doing something wrong?

  • #2

well I know absolutely NOTHING at ALL about your grow. soil, hydro, nutes, lights, fans, temps, RH, size of room, ect, ect, ect..... So how would you expect me to tell you if you are doing something wrong?

From the info you gave me, all I can tell you is yes, the buds swell up alot in the last 2-3 weeks of flower...

Answer your Q?.....

Fertilizing with age old bloom, budswell, and molasses, supplemented with cal/mag occasionally. One 475 cfm 6" vent fan and two 178 cfm 6" intake fans. Temps are from 75 - 80 with RH between 40 - 50. Strain is Sweet Skunk. Let me know if you need any other info.

Just be patient. You will amazed at how much bulk they put on the last couple of weeks. Just be sure to keep em fed during weeks 6-8, most strains have quite a growth spurt then. I actually reintroduce some veg nutes then. Yes I know it slows flowering, thats why I do it. I dont mind an extra week or so of flower. I love the fat buds gained in the end.

Plants will swell before your eyes for the last 2 weeks as long as you continue to supply them with the essential needs.

THIS ^^^^

Do not starve your plant the last few weeks in the insane idea that you can somehow "remove" fertilizers from the plant. Finish her healthy, chop her down dry her slow and do a good cure.

Should I trim fan leaves during veg, or just leave them

What should my buds look like at week 6?

Three things happen as week six of the cannabis flowering stages rolls around: Buds will continue to grow and progress further toward ripening. Pistil hairs will start to switch from white to a light brown or amber color. Trichomes will start to become opaque on their way to milky white.

Do buds still grow in week 6?

If you grow strains with an average flowering time, the majority of bud development will occur by the 6th week of bloom. In the last two weeks, the buds will mostly be ripening and not really growing much more in size. At this point, the previously white pistils on the buds will now slowly turn amber-brown.

What should my buds look like at 5 weeks?

In week 5 of flowering, you can observe the buds all over your plant becoming thicker. You may also spot new buds growing in new places such as along the main cola. With buds abounding, your cannabis plants will get fatter every day. This is a surefire sign you are in full flowering mode.

What should buds look like at week 7?

Your buds in Week 7 will be noticeably frostier, as the plants begin to finish out. These plants are beginning to look smokable! Seriously, at this point, you will want to rip off a nug and go smoke! That is how appealing your plants begin to look as you get into Week 7.
