How did shanks lose his arm to a sea king

level 1

Shanks intentionally lost his arm to show Luffy that being a pirate isn't easy like he assumed. Shanks later tells Whitebeard that he bet his arm on the next generation or something to that matter, which further supports this.

level 2

I wonder if losing his arm affected too much his combat power, I believe once we get to know the true nature of his abilities we'll know that having one arm or two wouldn't have make a difference for him, even if Mihawk says otherwise

level 1

My personal theory is that this went trough his mind after losing his arm: ''Ow shit I was more drunk as I thought, well better make up a cool sounding excuse. I bet my arm on the new generation, yeah that sounds cool. ''

level 1

He didn't activate his Haki to prove a point to Luffy. He scares the Sea king off with (Conqueror's) Haki after the point was made. Luffy needed to learn that the seas are dangerous, and Shanks saw his potential and admired his spirit. He didn't want Luffy to think he could be invulnerable, or that Shanks or someone else would be there to save him. So he "bet his arm on the next generation."

level 1

Officially; Oda's editor suggested he put it to increase the tension in the story, so Oda did it.

At the time there was no deeper meaning, no justification, just a cool thing that made Shanks an awesome character.

level 2

Like on naruto when he got covered from those big-ass shurikens on the first chapter.

level 1

How could Whitebeard get actually gored through by a jobber like Squard?

level 1

It was before the concept of CoA was even invented, and it was used a shock factor for the first chapter, something to make you think : "Damn" while you read that part.

level 1

By causing the loss of Shanks' arm Luffy is now indebted by guilt to become a great pirate. If Shanks just saved him in an instant Luffy would just be a kid that saw Shanks when he was young, not someone that's alive today because of a Yonko.

level 1

he let the sea king eat it , to show luffy how dangerous being a pirate was.

level 1

to motivate a kid that basically has the same trait as gol d roger. so that he can go on a journey to get roger's treasure which is a bait to get him there, and learn the history /truth. Then they want to bet that luffy will be able to do what Roger couldnt after being the pirate king.

How could Shanks lose an arm to a Sea King?

Higuma went out into the sea with Luffy but was eaten by a Sea King. Shanks would swim after Luffy and protect him from the creature. However, the pirate ended up losing his left arm in the process.

Why did Shanks let the Sea King take his arm?

He sacrificed his arm because a sea monster was going to eat luffy. Then it was scared of him, so it slunk back into the sea like a coward.

Did Shanks lose his arm intentionally?

Regardless of what Oda's intention was, Shanks ended up giving up his arm entirely on purpose. Other people mentioned that Oda initially did not plan on Shanks losing his arm, until an editor pointed out that the series would be boring otherwise.
