How do you dodge in Batman?

I am wondering how to succesfully dodge knife attacks. The "normal" approach of pressing Y does not work. Instead I stun the knife attackers by pressing B and hope to hit them fast enough KO via excessive X pressing. This assuming that I hit them first before they hit me though.

Hence: How am I supposed to dodge a knife attack once this glaringly red alarm icon appears?

There is no direct counter to the knife goons in Arkham Asylum.

You may JUMP over them to continue your combo to another goon, or you can CAPE STUN them to open them up to direct attack.

A good strategy when fighting a group of enemies that contain 'special goons' ( knife and stun wielding ones ) is to build up your combo until you have a yellow move and do an instant takedown or body throw on the blade goons.

My favourite is by far what tiddy mentioned, the instant takedown or throw to clean them up before you even get the "red alarm icon".

In a pinch, you might just want to use the invincibility you get from using these special moves. Don't hesitate to pick up unarmed thugs if you are about to lose a combo. You can also pre-emptively throw unarmed thugs at the armed ones.

In addition, you might be interested in dodging away from the knife weilding thugs (followed by batclawing them and jumping over them, or maybe engaging other thugs).

The description should be in the WayneTech menu, where you get the upgrade. It works the same as it did in both Arkham City and Arkham Origins, so, if you have either of those, you can also look at the WayneTech menus there if they have descriptions that are easier to understand.

But basically: during the entire attack, hold the WASD keys to move in a direction that's roughly away from the attacker. A bladed attack consists of three or four swipes (three for normal thugs, four for ninjas and brutes). Prior to each swipe of the blade, begin holding the counter button (right mouse) and hold it throughout that swipe. After the swipe is complete (but not too soon, or you'll get hit), release the counter button and immediately press and hold it again before the next swipe.

You can think of it as performing a separate hold of the counter button for each swipe.

Also, technically, the first swipe is more forgiving than subsequent swipes. If you're not holding WASD during that swipe, but hold it for the rest, you'll still come out ok.

Like, I don't understand it at all. Do I start holding triangle right when the orange lights appear over the enemy's head? Do I push away right as they swing?

You hold triangle and move the analog away at the same time. There are multiple swings so keep holding them until the guy's done. Also when you upgrade the blade dodge you press triangle after each strike.

I forged this signature.

It took a long time for me to get the hang of it. It's really awkward sometimes, you just have to practice.

The regular thugs will swing 3 times but the others (not sure where you're at so I don't wanna spoil it) will swing about 4 times. If you don't wanna try the blade-dodge-counter then just stick with holding the thumbstick away from the swings while holding triangle.

Keep holding? That would explain why I always get hit, I try to press it again for each strike in the combo.

Dodging knife combos, dodging broken bottle combos, and dodging assassin katana combos have their own nuances in timing. You just have to learn to hold Down + Triangle on the first hit, then wait for the next and so on...I can usually dodge two attacks of them, but the third is somewhat delayed.

Hm, am a little confused now.

Each blade attack consists of three or more individual strikes.

Do I have to press triangle and the stick for each of the strikes or do I press it once and then, if successful, hold it until the attack is over?

the best way to not get knifed is to put your fist in the dudes face ;p

If you just want to dodge and don't care about countering them, just hold Triangle and away from the enemy. No timing or separate presses, just hold them both until they stop swinging.

Ah, okay, I always tried to dodge each individual strike. And for countering, I have to press triangle once more when the attack is over, right?

How do you stop the gas in Batman?

Locate the gas pipe beneath the loading docks sign on the western-most wall, activate Battle Mode then use your winch to rip it in two. That takes care of your toxic gas problem, meaning that it's now possible to proceed deeper into the factory.
