Game Mods

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 features Game Mods in its Options menu that allow you to change how the game operates.

Legacy: This section includes three movesets for you to choose from. By default, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 allows you to use all the gameplay features you'd expect, such as reverts, spine transfers, and more. However, if you prefer, you can restrict yourself to a more old school moveset.

  • Classic THPS1 - The old control scheme from the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Disallows: manuals, stance switching, nollies, fakies, reverts, spine transfers, acid drops, wall plants, certain tricks.
  • Classic THPS2 - The old control scheme from the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. Allows: manuals, stance switching. Disallows: reverts, spine transfers, acid drops, certain tricks.

Assists: You can enable the below options to make the game easier to play. These are great for beginners while they get their skater legs. Bear in mind that activating any of the below means your scores won't be uploaded to leaderboards.

  • Perfect Rail Balance - Toggle this on and you won't have to maintain your balance when grinding.
  • Perfect Manual Balance - Toggle this on and you won't have to maintain your balance when doing a manual.
  • Perfect Lip Balance - Toggle this on and you won't have to maintain your balance when performing lip tricks.
  • Always Special - Toggle this on and your Special meter will always be full.
  • No Bails - Toggle this on and you'll never fail a trick.

Use Reverts and Manuals to Extend Combos

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Guide PS5 PS4 6

This is fairly basic stuff, but beginners should get in the habit of doing reverts and manuals. Using these abilities, you can string together tricks and keep combos going for a surprisingly long time. This is how you'll rack up hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of points in one go. When coming down on a vert ramp, press R2 just as you hit the ramp to do a revert. Manuals are performed by pressing up then down on the D-pad. You can also press down then up for a nose manual. Combine these techniques, you can build up some insane scores.

Keep Your Board Aimed Forward When Landing

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Guide PS5 PS4 7

It might sound obvious, but you need to ensure your skateboard lines up with your direction of travel. If you're going up a vert ramp and spin a little, make sure you're facing the right way before you land, otherwise you'll fail the trick and fall over. The same applies on flat ground. If your wheels aren't facing the right way, you're going to bail, which could cost you a ton of points.

Mix Up Your Tricks

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Guide PS5 PS4 8

If you want to achieve those really big scores, you need to keep things varied. Tricks lose points value each time you repeat them on a run, meaning you won't get on the leaderboards just spamming Kickflips and Melon grabs. Use your full arsenal of tricks and abilities when pulling off combos to get more points. Change up directional inputs to execute different tricks, and memorise a few special tricks to throw in the mix as well. Variety is the spice of life, and it's also the key to a high score.

Straighten Up with R2

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Guide PS5 PS4 9

Sometimes, you'll find yourself hurtling towards the ground, and you're not going to land on your board. If you hit a vert ramp but end up heading for a flat surface, there's a way to realign yourself so you don't bail. Hold R2 and your skater will straighten up, putting the skateboard beneath you and ensuring you land safely.

If In Doubt, Grind It Out

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Guide PS5 PS4 10

You'll usually be able to tell where you're heading in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, but occasionally you might find yourself in an awkward position. If you're flying through the air and aren't sure where you're going to land, our tip is to hold Triangle. Triangle is how you pull off lip tricks, grinds, and wallrides, so it's a pretty versatile button, and you can sometimes use it as a bit of a safety net. If you hold Triangle, there's a fairly good chance you'll style it out with a grind or wallride. This isn't guaranteed, of course, but the game's levels are full of kerbs, rails, and vertical surfaces, so this works more than you might think.

Walls Are Not the Enemy

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Guide PS5 PS4 11

If you're heading for a wall, you might think that's the end of your combo. In fact, walls are an opportunity to keep a combo going. With a press of Triangle, you can perform a wallride as mentioned above, but you can also do a wall plant. Let's say you're grinding and headed for a flat wall. Jump off the rail and, when you're about to collide with the wall, press X and you'll perform a wall plant. This will bounce you off the wall and push you back in the opposite direction. Nice!

That about does it for our Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 guide on PS5 and PS4. Hopefully you've found it informative and helpful in your quest for skateboarding glory. If you've any other tips and tricks for novice skaters, please do share them in the comments section below.

I SUCK at Tony Hawk’s now 😂

How do you use specials in Tony Hawk 2?

Open the main menu, then use the shoulder buttons (L1 and R1 for PS4, or LB and RB for Xbox One) to swap to the Skater menu. Now shift to the tricks section using the triggers to see all the specials your current skater can perform.
