It varies a lot depending on the elevation of the muzzle when the shot is fired. In trap, that angle is fairly consistent. In skeet, the angle varies dependant on where an individual shooter breaks a target. Some guys hit them right out of the house and others wait until they are right on top of them. Max distance on 7 1/2 is like 230 yards or so at a 30 degree angle if memory serves me corectly. You will need a lot bigger shot fall zone if you allow 7 1/2 to be shot on your skeet field instead of limiting it to 9's.

I picked that size shot because trap shooters will occassionally wander over to shoot skeet and that is probsbly the maximum shell to shot. Fred

An easy way to tell is to walk out about 100 yards downrange and to the side of the skeet high house. Fire a few rounds back at the skeet house and check if you can find where the shot hit the house. At that range, most of the shot will miss the house and hit various other buildings and stuff on the other side of the house but probably won't do too much damage. Hopefully, there will be no one that wanders into your line of fire who gets hit and sues the Club.

Of course, shooting back at the club buildings from downrange probably violates some local firearm ordinances, but so what. If you going to shoot up the skeet house, a few laws shouldn't bother you.

PS. Don't let the Range Master see you doing this. He may think that you are not firing your gun in a responsible manner.

Some where in back of my head I've read that maximum distance of a BB or shot from a shotgun is 350 yds for safety bounderies.I would add a 100 more yds if I had the room Jon

I would suggest you check with your county/state to see what is required. It might save you some problems in the future. It doesn't really matter how far it travels, the perseaved safe distance for shot fall in your area is what legally matters. You might be suprised. Post-2

Lyman 5th Ed has the horizontal distance at 237 yards for 7 1/2 at 1200 f/s. FYI 7 1/2 at 1350 is 247 yards.

300 yards is usually the recommended safety zone, to allow if there is a tail wind.

It depends on the size of the shot. 7 1/2 and smaller is less then 300 yards. The larger shot there after will go farther as the shot gets bigger.

The figures I've seen have all been within a yard or two of the numbers Waverider posted. Waverider is also correct as to recommended shotfall zone.

Western Shooter,

I wish it were tongue in cheek but this is exactly what one of our Club members did to our Club recently. I'm not on the Board but I think they are considering what they should do about it.

As part of our lease for our trap club,we were required by the county commisoners to conduct "How far does shot travel"tests. In order to be absolutely certain,I actually shot at a person at measured distances. I know, sounds crazy. But,it was safely done with ABSOLUTELY no chance of injury. Long story, call me if you want all the details. Tom Lobonc Hamilton,Montana 406 821-3215 anytime. Busy means I am on the computer, try in 1/2 hr or so

I took some with me to Florida once, so it can travel a long way. Didn't see Earl though.

The standard for new construction is 300 yards. If you get insurance they will require it.
