How long do apartment applications take Reddit

This past weekend, I went to a viewing to look at a room in Brooklyn. The next morning he sent me the application and I returned it along with all the rest of the paperwork he needed less than a day after. I messaged him today to ask for any updates on my standing in the application and he said he would let me know by the beginning of next week if I were approved. And while this isn’t particularly long, most people say they find out within the first 48 hours or less after they submit an application.

Im starting to get nervous because not only do I have to move out by the end of the month, but I also paid him my good faith deposit aka my first month’s rent. I don’t have the time nor the money for NYC broker fuckery. I also notice the listing was pulled off of Street Easy. I need some guidance here.

Hi everyone,

My partner and I applied for a rental property 5 weeks ago now. The real estate managing the property is an independent, boutique agency in Brunswick (the rental is a small home in the far northern suburbs).

To try and make a long story short:

Sat 23rd Jan: Applied via 1form

Fri 29th Jan: Called the agency to follow up, was told the landlord would be painting the property and it won't be ready for another two weeks.

Wed 10th Feb: Called the agency again to follow up, was told that "the landlord will be making their decision today and we will hear back by the end of today".

Fri 19th Feb: Called again, was told again that "the landlord will be making their decision today and we will hear back by the end of today". I say they told me that last time I called, and without meaning to be rude I would just like to know if my application is still being considered, as I am interested in the property but it's been 4 weeks at that point. She tells me that yes my application is still being considered, and that I will definitely receive an answer by next week.

So, my question is, has anyone else had to deal with such a long application time?! The property is still listed on all the rental websites, there's been no new inspections since the first one, I'm just not sure wtf is going on? Should I just give up and move on from this property?

Would love to hear anyone's input!

TLDR: Rental application is taking forever but haven't been told no yet, what's the go?

I met with a landlord to tour an apartment that my boyfriend and I love. They told us they had some other applicants already, but that they weren’t really interested in renting to any of them.

My boyfriend has stellar credit, I don’t have good credit. We mentioned that and they said that was fine.

Anyway, we submitted our applications Sunday, they received it and emailed me back saying “thank you!”. I still haven’t heard if we’ve been approved/denied yet.

They will at least let us know if we don’t get approved right? Is this a long time for an application to be processed? The suspense is killinggggg me.

It depends on the apartment and the screening service they use. Some use “instant screening” that can come back in ten minutes, others use a more intensive process that can take a week.

A little-known factor is that it can also be affected by your previous residences. If you indicate that you used to live in Middle-of-Nowhere, Alabama and the court records there are only available from a silver-haired grandma looking through file cabinets to check for your name, it’s going to take longer than somewhere more modern in its record-keeping.

Finally, they might not even be screening you yet. They could be sitting on your application while they run the person in front of you in line.

Should take a few days if the rea and owner are organised?

I've currently got a unit available for rent. The rea will usually email me after the day after an open for inspection with the stats on registered attendees vs actual attendees and then will call if they get any applications.

If any applications sound ok they will then give me a report showing a summary of the application with a rent/income ratio (higher than 30 percent is shown as not good) and based on that I can approve it or not. This goes back to the rea who then can inform the applicant. All this is usually within 2 days of an inspection.

When we were renting ourselves we used to pre fill the application form and hand it in during the inspection. Nowdays it seems to be all online and it still seems to be a thing to do as I've had several folks apply before inspecting the place (you can always just say no after the inspection)

Good luck!

After touring the place my bf and I applied Friday night. This is a NEW apartment complex with 357 units, so many apartments vacant still, they just started leasing 6 months ago. The leasing guy was making it seem like it’s a fast process and gave us a quote for a move-in date of 11 days from the touring day.

Saturday morning we received our copy of the credit report. Didn’t hear anything back so Sunday I called to see if there was anything else we needed to send over. They told us our agent would email us a list of documents to send over. 5 mins later, we receive the email. My bf and I were gathering our docs that night.

Monday afternoon, someone leaves a voicemail following up about sending over documents because “he wants to get us approved as soon as possible” . We sent in our documents Monday night.

Tuesday, I called to see if they had received the documents, someone tells us to send them to a different email. We forward documents to that email.

Wednesday , we called to follow up, the guy on the phone pulled up our application and mentioned our credit report was good and that John would be reviewing the application and giving us a call back in the next few days.

Note: my bf and I are first time renters, we have no rental history, 740 and 760 credit score, no criminal backgrounds, our income fit the 2.5x gross requirement (over by a few hundred).

I just want to ask ya’ll for advice/feedback because we don’t have any experience in rental applications but the fact that it’s taking so long for THEM to follow up after they quoted us with such a soon move in date, has me thinking that something in our application was a red flag and they are beating around the bush ? Before touring the place, I had mentioned to them that we would be first time renters so I thought that wouldn’t be a red flag if they invited us to apply. But also because we applied Friday night, it’s technically been 3 business days since applying and 2 business days since our docs were submitted. When we call to follow up, they do mention that it can take a several days to hear back.....but is that normal?! All the experiences I see on here, people get approved same day, next day, following day..so what do you guys think? Are we being impatient ? Or does it seem like it’s more than likely we are not getting it?

How long do most apartment applications take?

In most cases, the rental application process is relatively straightforward. It should take somewhere from 24 to 72 hours. But sometimes it's longer; it's all based on the property manager's and landlord's ability to verify your (and possibly others') screening information.

How long is the process of moving into an apartment?

You can secure and move into a rental property in as little as 1 week. In more extreme cases, it may take 1 to 2 months to be able to move into a rental property. Securing a rental property is way faster than closing on a home.

What does it mean when your rental application is processing?

This is the stage where things start to speed up. In most cases, you'll receive an email to tell you your application has been accepted. If you decide to go ahead with the lease, the property manager will also include information about the rental bond and rent in advance that needs to be paid as soon as possible.
