How long do you leave ion semi permanent dye in

As some of you know, I’ve been stuck with this brown hair of mine ever since I had experimented with a series of honey treatments back in 2012. Periodically, I’d play around with semi-permanent dye to add some colour to my hair, one of them being Ion Color Brilliance Brights. I picked up this dye on a whim at Sally’s Beauty Supply in December 2013, and so far, I’ve tried 2 colours from the line: Fuschia and Magenta.

The Promise

Ion Color Brilliance Brights promises to produce vivid, boldly intense results. However, the vibrancy of the final results will directly depend on the degree of lift achieved with pre-lightening. In addition, it promises to deposit colour in 20-40 minutes on pre-lightened hair, and natural or colored hair.

How did it work?

First off, I didn’t pre-lighten my hair. The lady at Sally’s Beauty Supply was actually reluctant to sell me this product without a hair lightener because she thought my hair would be too dark for the true colour to show at all. This was true, but I wasn’t aiming for my hair to be the exact same colour of the box anyway.

The consistency of the dye was really thick, so I mixed it with a little conditioner and then applied it to slightly damp hair which was sectioned off into four quadrants. I started out using gloves but later ditched them, because I found that using my bare hands made it easier for me to coat each strand (#curlyhairdontcare lol). After applying the dye, I covered my hair with a plastic cap and left it on for about 2 hours. I also blow-dried my hair for the last 20 minutes. Finally, I washed it out, conditioned and styled. I probably should have used an after colour treatment to close the cuticle, but I didn’t bother with it.

I thought my hair came out pretty well, considering that I didn’t follow the instructions to a T. Since my hair wasn’t pre-lightened, I was pleasantly surprised that the colour turned out to be as intense as it was. After the 3rd week, the colour started to fade, but it lasted for about 6 weeks before I had to repeat the whole dying process again. I think 6 weeks is a pretty long time considering that I wash my hair every week.

What to expect?

Although the hair dye colours are very potent/pigmented, the dyes are also very thick! I definitely recommend using a dye brush and/or mixing it with conditioner first, so that it’s easier to apply to the hair. The smell is not everyone’s favourite, but I personally liked its soapy scent which lingered on the hair for a while.

Special Ingredients:

To my knowledge, there are no special ingredients. However I will say that this product doesn’t contain ammonia or peroxide. The product was also said to be formulated in Italy.

Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Ceteareth-50, Lauryl Alcohol, Peg-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Dimethicone Peg-8 Meadowfoamate, Myristyl Alcohol, Fragrance, Cocamidopropyl Betaine ,Imidazolidinyl Urea, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Basic Yellow 57, Lactic Acid, HC Blue No. 15, Alpha Isomethyl Ionone, Citronellol, Geraniol, Linalool.

Other Details:

The Ion Color Brilliance Brights dyes are fairly cheap. I bought them for around $8 each at Sally’s Beauty Supply. They are equipped with instructions, and do not need to be mixed with a developer. I recommend buying a tint/dye brush to apply it to the hair for easier application. Also, there’s not much in a tube. I believe you get around 2.05 oz of dye which is not enough for long hair. So, if your hair is thick and/or longer than shoulder length, I suggest getting at least two boxes. I’ve had no experience with the dye transferring to my clothes or bed sheets and thankfully it didn’t stain the shower!

Would I buy it again?

Yes! Although I am looking at other dyes at the moment, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy this dye if I’m ever in Sally’s Beauty Supply again.

Ion is a natural hair dye company that provides their hair color products named Ion Brilliance. They can exist in creme or liquid states.

Ion hair color is just like other hair dye products, however, the advanced ionic technology utilizes pure ionic micro pigments to result in deeper, more intense finished color.

How do I dye ion color brilliance?

Ion is a good brand for dyeing your hair, but the result will be just perfect if you use it correctly.

Things you’ll need:

A non-metallic bowl or an application bottle
An applicator brush
Ion color brilliance
Ion developer

Instruction:

Mix about 2-oz. bottle of dye with 2 oz. of developer in a non-metallic bowl or bottle by stirring or shaking
Use an applicator brush to apply the mixture to your hair (depending on the purpose to dye your hair in different ways. For example, applying from the root to the top of your entire hair if you expect it to have a totally new color. If you just cover the gray or dye your hair with the color that you already dyed, do with the roots first, followed by the rest of your hair, with 20 minutes for each stage)

What is the ratio for ion hair color?

It is recommended to use equal parts ion color and ion developer. That means the ratio should be 1:1.

Some people will use it without a hair developer, it’s still fine, but the result might not be permanent as the main aim of this dye.

How long do I leave ion hair dye in my hair?

The time to let the ion hair dye sit in your hair can vary, depending on the volume and dyeing purpose. In case you are coating your hair with a new color, it should rest 20 minutes on your hair.

It can be 30 to 45 minutes if you use 30 to 40 volume developer mixed with your ion hair dye.

A semi-permanent hair dye can even be left overnight thanks to the safer components. You better wrap your hair carefully with a hair towel wrap to avoid the dye staining your pillow and clothes. However, just stop when you feel your scalp starts irritating or itching.

What happens if I use hair color without a developer?

As already mentioned, you can use ion hair dye without a hair developer. However, it would be better to combine these two hair care products to have the best color.

Without a developer, the result won’t be as permanent as intended. Your hair might end up splotchy and uneven because the hair doesn’t absorb the dye’s pigment. But it might be acceptable when it comes to semi-permanent color.

Do I need to shampoo after using ion color?

If you have dyed your hair with semi-permanent color, you better keep it last longer on your hair and only rinse it with cool water after that.

The reason is semi-permanent hair dye only lasts for one to a couple of shampoos, so never wash your hair with shampoo right after coloring with a semi-permanent.

Things change with a permanent counterpart. You can rinse and shampoo your hair after dyeing with ion color.

It will help remove any excess color in your head, neck, or face in the dyeing process. Moreover, shampooing will even bring out a truer color of the outcome.

Process 25 minutes at room temperature. For enhanced deposit or gray blending: Place plastic cap over hair and process. Process under a warm dryer for 10-15 minutes. Cool for 5 minutes then rinse thoroughly.
