How long does it take to get a suit tailored at Nordstrom

Have you guys taken advantage of Nordstrom’s alterations? Do they hire trained tailors? Did they do a good job on your clothing? I read online that you can bring clothes from anywhere, is that true? I’m just curious to hear about your first hand thoughts.

How long does it take to get a suit tailored at Nordstrom

level 1

I’ve had tons of stuff altered by Nordstrom, and they always do a fantastic job.

One time I asked for jacket sleeves to be shortened and the seamstress advised against it. She gave me an explanation as to why she didn’t think it was a good idea, so i took her advice and am glad I did. I was impressed that she was honest with me, instead of just taking my money and doing the alteration.

I've only done it once, to a pair of jeans. They're my favorite pair, and they fit me so well I don't even have to wear a belt!!

level 2

How much is jeans? I have pair of madewell jeans I need to be taken in at the waist area and trying to not to break the bank but also make sure they fit well.

I’ve never brought something from a different store in to be altered, but whenever I buy something from Nordstroms I ALWAYS use their services. They do a fantastic job and you get store credit for the price of the service! 10/10 would recommend.

and you get store credit for the price of the service! 10/10 would recommend.

Not entirely true. If you have the credit card, you get $100 of alterations "credit" per year. You pay for the alterations with your card, and get reimbursed in Nordstrom notes. Again, up to $100 per year.

The credit only applies to clothes purchased at Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack.

I was there to get a dress for a wedding, fond one I loved, but a small was too small in the bust and a medium too big everywhere. A seamstress came to my fitting room, look at the 2 sizes. Took the small marked it and came back in 15min with it fitting perfectly.
On another note my fiance got a suit custom tailored there and it is wonderful.

level 1

Yes, yes, yes, and yes. Although for some things they can be a bit pricey.

level 1

YES I’ve had so many things altered at Nordstrom (I don’t think I’ve ever brought anything in from outside though). Jeans, formal dresses, my suit - all perfectly tailored!

I just went to get 2 pairs of pants hemmed this weekend but have not picked them up yet. I’ll report back on the quality!

I am very worried and am mentally preparing to ask for my money back and/or further alterations as, the tailor seemed rushed, didn’t listen to what I said, and was running around helping multiple people at the same time despite me having an appointment.

This seems standard for this particular Nordstrom which I find to have terrible customer service, and also common in this area (DC metro area generally known for a culture of bad customer service).

level 2

Was it the pentagon city one? I was thinking about having my fiancé go there to get a suit tailored

level 2

Hi! How was your experience? Was it Tyson’s? Anyone tried the Pentagon City or Montgomery Mall?

level 1

Fantastic but way more expensive than I was expected. I got my nice "event clothes" done there and don't think I'll be able to afford it again in the future. You can bring clothes from anywhere.

At least I look good at weddings and funerals.

level 1

I’ve used them multiple times and their prices are very competitive. No real complaints, although it’s not the same as taking it to a master tailor.

level 1

Had a great experience getting some pants hemmed for only $10! Idk if I’d bring more serious alterations there but $10 for a solid hemming was great

level 1

I’ve gotten pants shortened there, for free. I think if you have your phone number registered with them it’s free. However I think I remember them telling me getting the waist taken in was $26, and getting sleeves shortened was $15. Still super happy I don’t have to pay to get my pants shortened anymore since I’m 5’2 with a 26 inch inseam and need almost everything shortened lol. They did a great job too!

level 1

It depends on the store and the seamstress. I've had great experiences with tailoring and not so great ones. For simple stuff like hemming, they do an ok job.

For actual fitting, they're not really what I would call a master tailor. You have to tell them exactly how you want it to be taken in- like please take this sleeve up to here. They don't attempt to fit you. I also haven't had great experiences with them on anything that has a "complex" fabric. Because they don't really try to fit you/spend that much time with you, sometimes you end up with clothes that end up being "off" when you get it back. Like sure, your pants are hemmed to where you specified but now it looks like your legs are chopped off.

level 1

As a word of caution, the times I've been at the fabric store, it's not uncommon to see representatives from chain stores that proport to offer alterations hanging around the cutting counter asking everyone if they can sew and asking if they'd like to do alterations part-time for them. So some locations may have well-trained tailors/seamstresses, but others aren't doing much better than hiring people off the street.

level 2

A very specific part of the street. I don't know, that seems like a good idea to me. I assume they check to see whether they actually can sew after that.

level 2

So they are hiring people who can sew to sew...

level 1

What does it typically cost? I have their credit card and have been curious about using the free tailoring allowance but i feel like there's a catch. Like every service is going to cost way more than the freebie? Lol. I think they give you like $100-150? I usually do it myself so it really just depends if i can pay nothing or a small amount and have the convenience because i don't enjoy doing it.
