Earvin Magic Johnson Jr. was born to Christine and Earvin Johnson and grew up with six other siblings. Inspired by his father’s strong work ethic, he took to sports and especially basketball at a young age. In fact, by the eighth grade, Johnson was sure he wanted a future in basketball. With idols like Bill Russell and Earl Monroe, Johnson dedicated himself to the court and his handwork earned him the nickname Magic at merely 15 years of age.

He attended Michigan State University (MSU) where his aspirations had been different on becoming a television commentator, however, he led his University to multiple championships and became a star player as a freshman itself. In 1979, when he applied for the NBA Draft, he became the first overall pick in the first round, by the Los Angeles Lakers. In spite of a rocky playing career due to health obtrusions and other factors, he had been extremely successful in his day, becoming the top-paid player in the league at one point.

Magic Johnson NBA Championship Rings

All of the won Magic Johnson Rings had been during his term playing with the Los Angeles Lakers. He has won a total of 5 NBA championship rings in the years – 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988.

In the 1980 season, when it was supposed to be Johnson’s rookie season, he took over Kareem Abdul’s spot and led the Lakers to an impressive victory. He scored a total of 42 points with 15 rebounds and 7 assists in Game 6 of the 1980 NBA Finals. He consequently won his first NBA championship ring and also won his first NBA Finals MVP.

In the 1982 season, the Lakers finished with a 57-25 record and during the NBA championship series against the Philadelphia Sixers, Johnson averaged 16.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, 8.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. Consequently, Johnson became the NBA Finals MVP.

The 1985 Finals series was significant in Johnson’s career. The Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics 4-2 in the NBA Finals. This was the first time in Lakers history that they defeated Celtics in the Finals. Also, Johnson won his third NBA championship ring.

In the 1987 season, Johnson won his fourth NBA championship ring. The Lakers again defeated the Boston Celtics in the 1987 NBA Finals.

In 1988, Johnson earned his final and fifth NBA championship ring. The Lakers defeated the Detroit Pistons in the 1988 NBA Finals.

Magic Johnson also led the American basketball team in the Olympics winning a gold medal. He has also been 3 MVPs, 12 NBA All-Stars, and many other awards. He is also recognized as one of the top players and his jersey no. 32 is retired by the Lakers.
