I mean it all honestly depends on your dedication to the tank IMO. I've seen relatively crowded tanks that look PRISTINE because the people take very well care of them and the fish. As petsmart would say, "One gallon per inch of fish." So i mean theoretically you could have 15. I would feel safe putting many more than that in there, that is because I am comfortable with my experience in taking care of relatively crowded/overstocked tanks. A good start though if you are just getting into the hobby, maybe a small group of 5. See how you take care of them and get a feel for it. If you think you can add more, do so in adequate time. Hope this helped :) Show

Oct 24, 2010 Hello, everyone! From what I've read about guppies, they breed like crazy. How much of a problem is this? If I start with 5 or 6 guppies will they overrun my tank? I was hoping to put 5 or 6 guppies in with 8 neon tetras in a substrate planted 15 gallon tank. I am still in the planning stages, so I am flexible and willing to learn. Thoughts?

Theres a chance of that, one way of preventing that is to get all male guppies, which show nicer anyways, but also in a 15 gallon tank with no to very little cover I doubt many fry will survive with the hungry mouths around. Joined Dec 18, 2008 · 2,477 Posts
HAHA. I started with 6 endlers and in about 3 months had 150 of the things in a 15 gallon tank. ATM I got over 2 dozen that originated from those first 6. They are getting inbred and breeding is slowing down. I got to figure if I want to introduce new ones or just cull them all and breed some less common livebearer. Joined Oct 12, 2010 · 73 Posts

Discussion Starter · #7 · Oct 24, 2010 Good to know, so the trick is to make sure you don't accidentally get one female when you get the males... Is there an easy way to tell what sex you're getting? Is it hard to differentiate?

Discussion Starter · #16 · Oct 24, 2010 I'm very happy about this. I really enjoy guppies, but I was convinced they'd breed like rabbits and overtake any tank I had, and a neon tetra/guppy tank sounds fantastic.

but I was convinced they'd breed like rabbits and overtake any tank I had Don't be fooled, They can and most likely will. If you don't want the trouble of possible being over run with young then don't get females. Joined Oct 12, 2010 · 73 Posts
