How many sacks does JJ Watt have

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt recorded three sacks in Sunday's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars to become just the fifth player in NFL history with 50 or more sacks through the first four seasons of his career, per Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN.com).

Watt now has 51 career sacks, tying him with Dwight Freeney for the fourth-most ever through a player's first four seasons. Reggie White's 70 easily set the standard, followed by Derrick Thomas' 58 and DeMarcus Ware's 53.5.

While Thomas and (definitely) White are out of reach, Watt can pass Ware for sole possession of third place, if the former Wisconsin Badger notches three sacks over the final three games of the season.

A runway favorite to win the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award, Watt has 14.5 sacks through 13 games this year, after posting 5.5 (2011), 20.5 (2012) and 10.5 (2013) in his first three seasons.

In addition to all the sacks, Watt owns an incredible 2014 stat line that's rounded out by three forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, an interception, nine passes defensed, 10 tackles for loss on running plays, a blocked kick, two defensive touchdowns and three receiving touchdowns.

Even if you ignore all the other stats, Watt is the first player to ever record 14.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and an interception in the same season, per pro-football-reference.com's play index.

ESPN is reporting that Watt will undergo shoulder surgery that will likely sideline him for the remainder of the season.
Analysis: Watt is expected to need three months to recover, which could put him in line to return if the 7-0 Cardinals reach the Super Bowl. The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year sustained the injury last week against the Texans and had already been ruled out for Thursday's game against the Packers. Watt's impact on Arizona's defense has gone beyond the stat sheet, as he's recorded only one sack and 10 tackles through seven games.

Originally entered the league as a first-round (11th overall) selection by the Houston Texans in the 2011 NFL Draft. Signed a six-year contract extension with Houston on 9/2/14. Released by Houston on 2/12/21 and signed a two-year contract with the Cardinals on 3/2/21.
