AMC’s The Walking Dead series has been airing since 2010 with the pilot episode “Days Gone Bye.” Since then, the series has aired for many seasons and spawned several spinoffs, games and other related projects creating a vast universe and a special group known as TWD Family.

During the first episode, viewers were introduced to Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), a very well-known character to readers of Robert Kirkman’s comic book that inspired the series. Rick would eventually leave the series, but fans are awaiting the day when they will see him again in the promised trilogy of movies.

Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) are the last characters featured in the series that have been there since season 1. This duo has endured many trials and losses during their time in the apocalypse which has formed a special bond between them.

The Walking Dead seasons

In 2020 it was announced that the eleventh season of The Walking Dead would be the final for the series. Fans were shocked and saddened at the news.

The fandom will live on with Fear the Walking Dead and the other spinoffs that have been announced but nothing will ever compare to the first episode of the flagship series. The movies are supposedly still on the table, but fans have lost hope that these films will ever be created.

The final season is being released in three parts; the first part aired in 2021, with the second premiering in Feb. 2022. The third and final part of the series, which will consist of eight episodes has yet to receive a release date completed filming in March 2022. It is expected that a trailer and premiere announcement will be coming at The Walking Dead’s final appearance at San Diego Comic-Con in July.

Season 1 consisted of 6 episodes, with season 2 having thirteen. Seasons 3-9 all featured sixteen episodes. The tenth season was partially filmed during the pandemic, giving viewers some bonus episodes with a total of 22 episodes. The final season will consist of 24 episodes being released in three parts. Season 11 is the first season not to have an October premiere date but we have speculated that the final eight episodes will premiere in October 2022.

It is finally hitting fans that this series is coming to an end with only eight episodes remaining. The community of Alexandria is slowly being dismantled in Senoia, Georgia, which is another monumental mark of the end.

Lots of zombies! Director of The Walking Dead, Greg Nicotero wrote an article in the November 2022 issue of Empire and informed what audiences can look forward to in the show’s finale which he directed. “Is it zombie-heavy or zombie-light? Three new Walking Dead spin-offs coming soon

The new shows that will extend the end of ‘The Walking Dead’ by at least a few more episodes beyond the very last of the original that changed the zombie sub-genre forever will pair up fan-favorites Negan an Maggie, Grimes and Michonne as well as one focused on Daryl.

Daryl’s spin-off

Originally meant to be an anthology starring Daryl and Carol called ‘Tales of the Walking Dead’ the project took a turn when Melissa McBride who plays Carol was unable to relocate to Europe for shooting. Instead the show will focus solely on Daryl played by Norman Reedus as he tries to figure out how he ended up somewhere on the European continent.

The show will take a different turn. “The story’s way different. The characters are way different. There’s a different tone, there’s different light, there’s a different sound. It’s a whole different vibe,” Reedus told Entertainment Weekly. It’s set to premiere in 2023.

Maggie and Negan spin-off

The Maggie and Negan spin-off was originally title ‘Isle of the Dead’ but Entertainment Weekly reported that AMC changed it to ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ and will take the two to Manhattan. “The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror,” said the network. No date for its release has been posted yet.

Grimes and Michonne spin-off

Whether or not Grimes will pop up in Season 11 of ‘The Walking Dead’ hasn’t been revealed yet but the trailer has scenes harking back to the very beginning of the long-running horror series. Details of the Grimes and Michonne spin-off are scarce but the six-episode series will conclude the stories of the fan-favorites who disappeared.

“This is a moment fans of The Walking Dead have been waiting for since Rick disappeared in the helicopter early in season nine, and Michonne journeyed away on a quest to find him the following season,” said president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks Dan McDermott. The show will be released in 2023.
