How to ask God to make your dreams come true

God performs miracles today, and He answers prayers when we pray. He still works through dreams and visions to answer our questions, to save those who are unsaved, to give us warnings and instructions, and to provide us with intercessory guidance on behalf of other people.

Perhaps you have never received a dream from the Lord, or maybe you have and didn’t recognize that it was from the Lord. Let me share with you how to receive a dream from God with this seven-step process.

Step 1: Ask God to speak to you in a dream.

If you want to receive a dream from the Lord, then simply ask Him. If you ask, He will answer as it says in this Scripture:

Matthew 7:7-11 KJV
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him.

Step 2: Expect to receive.

If you ask for a dream, do so with the expectation that sooner or later God will give you that dream. Remember to be specific in what you ask, so God will be able to answer you.

How to ask God to make your dreams come true

James 1:6-8 MEV
But let him ask in faith, without wavering. For he who wavers is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed with the wind. Let not that man think that he will receive anything from the Lord. A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Step 3: Be still when you first awaken.

Sometimes we have dreams but we jump up out of bed so quickly we don’t remember them. When you first wake up, wait to see if you remember anything. If you do, ask the Lord if it is from Him. If peace fills your heart, know that the dream is from Him.

We need to be aware of Satan’s counterfeits that come to torment us. Generally speaking, if a dream fills you with fear, anxiety, and hopelessness, it is not from the Lord. However, sometimes a “warning dream” may at first be troubling, but when you begin to intercede and get further instructions from the Lord, hope will flood your being, and a supernatural peace will come over you.

Philippians 4:7 MSG
Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.

Step 4: Write the details of the dream down and date it.

Dreams are not necessarily to be taken literally. They often possess spiritual and metaphoric revelation that unfolds to you over time. Dreams of the Lord are usually very vivid and in detail. If you don’t write it down, you may not be able to remember the details later when the revelation comes.

Step 5: Pray for understanding and interpretation of the dream.

Every dream has a different interpretation. Some dreams are literal, some are spiritual, and others may have both a literal and spiritual meaning. Dreams are often symbolic. You don’t want to be led astray in the interpretation. That is why you have to ask God to help you understand it. He will either reveal it to you or send someone to you who is gifted and qualified in interpreting dreams. It takes a great deal of discernment and spiritual maturity to interpret dreams so be careful to whom you listen.

We aren’t able to go into depth about how to interpret a dream in this writing. It could be a book all by itself. There are some excellent anointed Christian books available on this subject. Don’t go out and buy any of those secular or occult books on dream interpretation; they will lead you into error and deception.

Be patient and wait upon the Lord. Sometimes it takes years for the meaning to be revealed such as in the case of Joseph in the Bible.

Step 6: Be careful with whom you share it.

Remember, Joseph shared his dream with his brothers, and they threw him into a pit. Later they sold him into slavery because they were so jealous of him. Other people may not understand the meaning of your dream and may talk you out of what God is trying to show you. Some may even be jealous and cause strife to rise up. Seek wisdom regarding a dream only from someone who is spiritually mature and trustworthy.

Step 7: Never rely on a dream as a sole source for a major decision

Be very cautious about using a dream to direct any major decisions in your life. A dream from God will never contradict the Scriptures because God never contradicts His written Word. If the dream does not illustrate, confirm or illuminate a revelation for your specific situation, it may not be from God. If a dream contradicts God’s written Word or encourages you to take an action that is outside the character and nature of Jesus, it is not from God.

The apostle James spoke about the difference between heavenly versus demonic wisdom in this Scripture:

James 3:13-18 KJV
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

The key to using godly wisdom in making decisions is determining whether the action is taken in a peace-loving manner, in submission to God, and produces good fruit.
