How to change address on usps informed delivery

I have signed up for informed delivery with my current address, but I am moving permanently to a new address next week.

If I do the change of address form at the USPS post office, will it update also my informed delivery account? Or should I sign up for a new account from scratch?

How to change address on usps informed delivery

level 1

You can change the address for informed delivery on your online account directly. You might need to do the identity proofing step again, not sure, but that can be as simple as requesting a code be mailed to your new address.

I had been struggling with this and finally received these instructions from a USPS customer service person. I followed these steps and it worked! I also have a PO box and this did not interfere with my Informed Delivery for my PO box.

  1. Sign in to your account.
    2. Hover over your name in the top right navigation bar and click "My Profile."
    3. Select Edit, Update your profile and save changes.
    4. Click "Preferences" from the left navigation.
    5. Complete "Email Validation", Two-Factor Authentication (validate phone)
    6. Scroll down to account management
    7. "Informed Delivery".
    8 .Select "Identity verification"
    Finalize under "Informed Delivery".

The Postal Service has upgraded Informed Delivery to better serve customers who have more than one address.

The free feature allows users to digitally preview their mail and manage incoming packages from their computers, smartphones and other devices.

Until recently, customers with more than one address had to create separate Informed Delivery accounts for each address.

With the new enhancements, customers can now set a primary residential address and a secondary PO Box address under one Informed Delivery account.

This upgrade will allow customers to toggle between the two addresses from their Informed Delivery dashboard to view their incoming mail and packages. Customers also will be able to manage their enrollment preferences for each address on their online profile.

The relocation process is both thrilling and exhausting, from packing your stuff, donating or selling goods that you won't be able to take with you, scheduling transportation, and notifying friends and relatives. When all these things happen at once, it's easy to overlook one critical aspect: changing your mailing address.

Failure to change your mailing address is one of the most aggravating errors you cannot afford to make. You may miss several months' worth of letters, documents, or parcels addressed to your previous address. However, with DoNotPay, you can focus on moving while we update USPS of the change of address for your informed delivery.

How to Notify USPS of a Change of Address

There are two ways to notify USPS that you are relocating and wish to change your mailing address.

  1. Make an online address change.

This is the simplest and quickest method to change your mailing address. You will receive an email confirmation almost immediately through the online address change. Additionally, you will be required to provide a valid email address and a credit or debit card. A $1.10 fee is also charged on your card for identity verification.

You cannot use prepaid cards or gift cards. The eligible debit or credit cards to use are:

  • American Express
  • Visa
  • Mastercard

If you don’t want to pay the fee, you can also download the Change of Address form online, have it printed and fill it out then submit it to your local post office.

  1. Get a mover's guide packet from the local post office.

The packet includes PS Form 3575, which once you complete, hand it to a postal employee at the counter. Alternatively, you can place it in the post office's letter mailbox.

Your confirmation letter should arrive at your new address within five business days. USPS ceases mail delivery to your previous address and starts sending mail to your new location in 7-10 days from the COA's start date.

If the confirmation does not arrive promptly, you can contact USPS through the following

How Much Time Do You Have to File a Change of Address With the US Postal Service?

The time at which you must notify USPS of a change of address is influenced by whether the relocation is permanent or temporary.

  1. Temporary Change of Address

USPS can forward mail for 15 days to six months/185 days. Suppose you intend to stay at the temporary address for longer and intend to continue delivering mail, in that case, you must formally extend the mail forwarding duration for up to 12 months by submitting a second change-of-address order.

This second change of address commences on the first day of the second six-month term. You have until the 364th day to select an expiration date for your mail forwarding application.

  1. Permanent Change of Address

For a permanent change of address, the mail class defines how long it will take for mail addressed to your previous address to be forwarded to your new address.

What Happens if You Don't File a Change of Address

If you relocate without submitting a change of address request, your mail carrier will collect all your mails and leave a note directing you to the nearest post office. The Post Office will retain any mail that has not been dispatched for up to ten days. Most mails are returned to the sender, and those that cannot be sent back are thrown away.

The process can be time-consuming and tedious, but failing to register a change of address might result in the loss or missing of critical information. Fortunately, DoNotPay is here to save the day.
