I’ve had the Ring Doorbell for a while now and it’s made life quite convenient for me.

It notifies me when someone’s at the door and I’m too engrossed in work to listen for it.

I’m usually listening to music on my phone, so I hear the notification through my earphones, and that’s come in handy quite a few times.

However, it can’t do this if it’s not connecting to Wi-Fi. One day it just wouldn’t connect to my home network, and I didn’t receive notifications for an important package delivery.

This simply wouldn’t do, so I hopped online to figure out exactly what was going on and how I could fix it.

If your Ring Doorbell is not connecting to Wi-Fi, check your Wi-Fi connection and ensure that the credentials are right. Keep your Ring Doorbell within range of your Wi-Fi Router.

If your Ring Doorbell still doesn’t connect to Wi-Fi, I’ve included instructions on Resetting your Ring Doorbell and changing the Wi-Fi Channel.

Why Does Your Ring Doorbell Not Connect To Your WiFi Network?

How to connect ring device to wifi

The lack of connectivity is usually caused by the following factors. Let us look at each of them in detail and see how you can rectify these problems.

Wrong Wi-Fi Password: At times, the problem may be as simple as typing in the wrong password.

Your Wi-Fi password has special characters: Special characters in your Wi-Fi password can cause problems while installing your device for the first time.

Poor Wi-Fi Signal: If your network connection is not strong enough, the device may fail to connect.

You could run into this issue if you’ve installed your Ring Doorbell on your door, or somewhere else far from your router.

This can also cause a delay in notifications, chimes, etc.

Battery and Power Issues: If your device is battery-operated, the device may fail to connect if the battery level is low.

Ensure to charge your doorbell to avoid this issue. If the device is powered, then maybe a temporary loss of power might be to blame.

Hidden Wi-Fi Networks: Some Wi-Fi routers have so-called “hidden” networks, wherein the network name, is not made public. If your network connection is a hidden one, your device will be unable to join the network.

Electrical Connectivity Issues: For a non-battery-powered device, a failure in the external wiring might be a reason for connectivity failure. This is likely if you’ve got your Ring Doorbell installed without an existing doorbell.

How Can You Fix the WiFi Connectivity on Your Ring Doorbell?

Wrong Wi-Fi Password: Check your password to confirm it’s the right one and try again. If the issue persists, talk with your Internet Service Provider.

If you change your Wi-Fi password after connecting up with your Ring device, you will need to reset and connect it again to the network.

Your Wi-Fi password has special characters: As a makeshift arrangement, you could change your Wi-Fi password temporarily.

Once the new password has been created and set up, a connection will be established between the device and the network.

You can then revert to your old Wi-Fi password at a later time. However, if you are doing this, make sure to reset your device and set it up again to avoid any issues down the line.

Poor Wi-Fi Signal: To increase the signal strength, try placing the router closer to the device. If that doesn’t work, you could try buying a repeater or a booster for your Wi-Fi router to increase its range.

Battery and Power Issues: Your Ring Doorbell has a power and voltage requirement of at least 16V, else the Ring Doorbell battery won’t last the usual 6-12 months.

Hidden Wi-Fi Networks: Click on the “Add Hidden Network” option during the setup, and key in the name of your network, exactly as it is.

Electrical Connectivity Issues: The external wiring might be faulty in this case.

I would advise you to turn off the power and check the wiring to see if the connections are all right.

A short circuit or a broken fuse might also be at fault here.

Check that the Wi-Fi network you are trying to connect to is on the 2.4Ghz band

Another reason why your Ring device can’t seem to find your network connection might be that your network is on the 5 GHz band.

The Ring Doorbell is compatible only with a 2.4 GHz network.

In this case, you have to connect to a router that’s transmitting on the 2.4 GHz band instead.

If your router can only broadcast on the 5.0 GHz band, your Ring device will not be able to discover this network while being set up, and hence this results in your device not getting connected to Wi-Fi.

Usually, under most circumstances, you can adjust your router to broadcast a 2.4 GHz signal.

I would recommend that you check your Wi-Fi router’s user manual to learn how to broadcast a 2.4 GHz signal, as the steps may be different for different router models.

Reset Your Ring Device

If your device is still facing problems connecting to Wi-Fi, try resetting your Ring Doorbell.

You can do this by pressing and holding the orange button on the backside of the device.

This resets the device, allowing you to start the whole setup process all over again.

Check the Wi-Fi Channels to Which the Device is Connected: Ring Devices Do Not Support Channel 12 or 13

How to connect ring device to wifi

Your router broadcasts your Wi-Fi network on one of 13 channels, for ease of usage and to avoid interference of different Wi-Fi signals.

Other devices should connect to different channels for their efficient working, especially if you have a large number of smart home accessories, including your Ring Doorbell working with HomeKit, or a similar automation platform.

Ring Doorbells do not support channels 12 or 13. However, they can connect to all the other available channels.

This might be why your network did not show up on the list of the Wi-Fi networks available.

If you are using the channels mentioned above, look at your router’s user manual to switch to a different channel.

Some Wi-Fi routers are automated to switch between channels to receive the most efficient connection.

If your router is facing the same problem, check the user manual to learn how to rectify this issue.
