A Chinese hardwood miniature cabinet, with wood insert decoration, brass mounts and a drawer fitted interior. 34 cm high, 35 cm wide, 17 cm deep. CONDITION REPORT: This miniature chest is structurally sound, there are no major losses. When looking at the case at the back, sides and top there is no splitting to the wood or lifting of any veneer etc. There are however plenty of scuff marks and losses to the wood surface just through use and age. The drawers themselves all run smoothly, they do have plenty of wear to the front edges and sides and this chipping of the wood surface is apparent throughout the front of the cabinet. The top edge of the rear of the cabinet has become separated at one corner to the extent that there is a gap 2 mm wide that is visible, but this is at the back of the cabinet. There are also occasional scuff marks and indentations along the rectangular top. The doors open and close smoothly, the floral decoration and marquetry inlay on the cabinet doors is intact, but again just low-level wear. All the handles are present on each of the drawers, and they are all firmly attached.

How old are camphor chests?

The Chinese camphor chest sprang up in 18th or 19th-century China as a highly-functional and decorative art piece. While it is possible to find chests from the 18th century, most available ones were produced in the 19th century. They were valuable vessels for transporting silks, tea, and porcelain from China to Europe.

What does camphor chest mean?

CARVED CAMPHOR CHEST In the 18th and 19th century, chests made from naturally fragrant camphor wood were primarily used to transport tea, porcelain, and silks from China to Europe. Prior to their use in sea trade, camphor chests were used in Chinese households as storage units for objects such as blankets and linens.

How do you look after camphor wood?

Care instructions CLEAN with hot soapy water and leave to dry. REOIL when the board is dry, approximately every couple weeks if used regularly. CLEAN monthly by sprinkling salt and rubbing with lemon.
