How to make android a media server reddit

Is there any way I can use my Android 10/11 phone to be used as a media server like I can use a Windows 10 Pc as media server to be detected by LG CX in Lg's Smart Share? I just want to stream 4K HDR files from phone to TV?

I would suggest setting it up first just with what you've got, try it out and see if it will work for you, before dropping money on the sd card. It will answer a lot of questions.

If you plan on running it 24/7, make sure it's a phone with a replaceable battery. The battery can swell up and damage the phone (or worse).

Hello Everyone,

I have a question regarding building a android media server app. I have scoured the internet for tutorials or examples on how to build. To no avail I couldn't find any.

I need to know how to build a media server app for android, for example: Kodi, Plex, Emby, AllCast. How would I go about doing so?

Thank you all very much.

Hey !

I would like to buy a 521gb microsd card to use as media storage, and setup a media server using kodi on my Android smartpone. What do you think? Is it a good idea ? Will I probably have performance issues ?

Thank you in advance !

I am looking for a self hosted media server that has an android app which allows downloading files (so I can watch part of my collection on the go). The only candidate I found was MediaPortal with aMPdroid, does anyone have experience with that setup, and does it truly store videos on the device?

Otherwise I have found services such as Plex and Emby, but I would like someone to chip in that those services definitely provide offline playback on their android clients before I buy anything.

Thanks in advance.

I've recently upgraded and want to repurpose my Essential PH1 as a Plex Media Server. It has a snapdragon 835 and I think it would make a pretty decent device (combined with a USB SSD) for serving direct stream content to a Fire TV Stick 4k. I'm looking for thoughts on how to go about this or reasons it might not work. The Plex Media Server app on the Play Store is not marked as compatible with any android phones as far as I know.

I can see two possible paths:

  1. (easy way) Find an an APK for PMS from a reputable source if it exists.

  2. Figure out how to install Debian on the device and run it as a normal Linux server.

Why I want to do this: Other than to recycle a device in a useful manner, I don't currently have a full-time Plex server and I miss it! My currently living situation (#vanlife) makes small size and low power consumption crucial (I have 300 watts solar charging my battery bank which has to last through the night while keeping my appliances running). As a bonus, my van LAN is configured with OpenWRT and travelmate to automatically connect to familiar networks. So when I visit friends my library could be made automatically available for movie nights! no more carrying around laptops and digging for cables in unfamiliar entertainment centers!
