Dipped pretzel rods are perfect for any occasion – just use different sprinkles and an easy treat is ready – whether it is a kid’s birthday party, Christmas gift, or Valentine’s treat.

You only need 3 ingredients to make them and for their simple assembling, they are the perfect project to do with kids.

These chocolate dipped pretzel rods keep well for a longer period of time, so you can easily make them in advance!

How to dip pretzel rods?

You can either dip the pretzels in melted chocolate or spread it over (this will depend on the thickness of the chocolate).

For dipping, the easiest way is pouring the chocolate into a thin, tall glass and dip each rod in as deep as you like.

If you want to make them well in advance, you should coat as much of the pretzel surface in chocolate as possible. The reason is simple: they will last longer – they will not go softer as the chocolate layer protects them from going stale.

Storage

Once the chocolate is set, chocolate covered pretzels will store well in an airtight container in your pantry.

They can easily last up to 2-3 weeks when stored properly.

Tips for making these fall pretzel snacks

  • You can use other colors of candy melts if you like – orange or black.
  • When using thick pretzel sticks (I used thin ones), the options of decorating them are endless – use mini candy eyes, stick candy corn or use other types of Halloween/fall sprinkles or buy a selection and let your kids decide what they want to use.
  • Wrap them individually (or in twos or threes) and tie with orange, white or black ribbon for DIY Halloween treats.

Melting chocolate

Use any chocolate you have experience with and you know that melts well. You want it to be thicker rather than thinner though.

I used candy melts. You will need about 2 cups to start with.

If your candy melts don’t melt for some reason, stirring in a little bit of shortening should help to thin the mixture. There are a few other ways how to thin chocolate.

    5. Enjoy!

Notes

  1. I used thin pretzel rods, but you can use the tick ones if you like. You won’t get as many as though, so you might need to melt more chocolate.
  2. You can use candy melts of other colors – orange, dark. The color of candy melts will also affect the overall shade/color of pretzel rods.
  3. They are also called candy nonpareils (autumn/fall blend). You will need about 1/4 – 1/2 cup.
  4. You can also use a microwave for melting if you have experience doing so. I don’t, so I use a double boiler and melt chocolate on the stove. That way I avoid possible burning and uneven melting.
  5. They will last for up to 2-3 weeks when stored properly in an airtight container.
  6. More tips can be found in the post above this recipe card.

How far in advance can I make chocolate covered pretzels?

Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods can be made up to one week ahead of being gifted or consumed. After that they tend to lose their freshness. Store in an air-tight container in a cool, dry area.

How do you make chocolate covered pretzel rods without a flat side?

Allow the caramel or chocolate to set/dry on parchment paper OR stand the rods up in an empty cereal box to avoid a flat side. If you're decorating with sprinkles or crumbles, you should add those to the pretzel rod before the chocolate dries.

Do you put chocolate covered pretzels in the fridge to harden?

Do chocolate covered pretzels need to be refrigerated? No, in fact, chocolate covered pretzels are best stored at room temperature. Dipped pretzel rods can be placed in the fridge for 10 minutes to help them set up, but otherwise they should be stored at room temperature to avoid condensation.

How long do candy dipped pretzel rods last?

Provided everything is fresh to begin with and the container is clean, dry, and has a tight seal, partially covered pretzel rods like the ones we made can stay fresh for about 2-3 weeks. If you are doing regular knotted pretzels and covering them entirely in chocolate, they will last even longer!
