How to make rice krispie treats with marshmallow creme

Have you ever wondered, “Can you use marshmallow fluff to make Rice Krispie treats?”

The simple answer is yes!! You can use marshmallow fluff (also known as marshmallow cream, marshmallow creme, marshmallow spread, or marshmallow paste) instead of marshmallows! The texture changes a bit, but they are just as delicious!!

Traditional Rice Krispie treats are just a little chewier than these marshmallow fluff rice crispy treats.

How do I Substitute Marshmallow Fluff for Marshmallows?

You can substitute marshmallow cream for marshmallows in a recipe. A 7-ounce jar of marshmallow creme is the equivalent of 4 cups of mini marshmallows.

What is Marshmallow Fluff?

Marshmallow fluff is basically a spreadable version of marshmallows.  It’s made out of  corn syrup, sugar, vanilla, and egg whites, and while it’s smooth and creamy, it’s gelatin-free.

You’ll find it at most grocery stores, and you can store it in your pantry just like marshmallows.

Why use spreadable marshmallow cream?

Rice Crispy Treats with Marshmallow Fluff are so delicious and super easy to make! We like to use the cream instead of marshmallows because it’s easier to stir and spread into a pan!

We also like the texture of the rice krispies with marshmallow cream better!

How to make rice krispie treats with marshmallow creme

You’ll need:

  • 7 1/2 cups crispy rice cereal
  • 6 tablespoons butter (We prefer salted)
  • 9 1/2 ounces marshmallow fluff (4 1/4 cups)
  • 9×13 Inch Pan

We’ve found the salted butter just boosts the flavor a bit without making the treats overly salty, but you can use any butter you have.

Instructions:

  • Spray your 9×13 inch pan and rubber spatula with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Place your Rice Krispies Cereal into a large mixing bowl.
  • In a large pot or saucepan, cut up your butter into chunks and let them melt on medium-low heat. Stir as you melt butter.
  • Once the butter is melted, spoon in the marshmallow fluff into the saucepan and stir.
  • Stir until the butter and fluff turn into one smooth mixture.
  • Then add in your Rice Krispies Cereal, and stir until all of it is combined.
  • Remove from heat, add in additional toppings you may like (if any), and transfer mixture into your 9×13 pan. Then press mixture evenly into the pan.

Tips to Make the Best Rice Krispie Treats with Marshmallow Fluff

  • Slowly heat the butter to melt otherwise it may scorch. You could also melt it in the microwave.
  • If you’re measuring the marshmallow cream in a measuring cup, it can be helpful to spray it with a nonstick spray as well since the cream is sticky!
  • Also, keep the temperature low as you mix in the marshmallow cream — otherwise the treats can end up hard.
  • It’s best to let the pan of treats set up before trying to cut them. We usually wait 2 hours before cutting (if we can stand it!).

Adding in Your Custom Toppings

This recipe is great as-is, but we also love to mix in candies and colors to vary up this classic, easy dessert! Last week, I added butterscotch chips and then sprinkled salt over the top of the entire baking dish and the whole family loved them!

Some ideas include:

  • 2 Cups Heath Bar Crumbles (found in the baking aisle at most grocery stores)
  • 2 Cups Caramel or Butterscotch Chips mixed in to the marshmallow cereal mixture and then topped with a sprinkle of salt
  • Top with melted chocolate and peppermint
  • Top with warmed creamy peanut butter

If you’re looking for a delicious idea, you have to try our Rice Krispie Treats with Chocolate Chips Recipe!

How to Store Marshmallow Fluff

Storing Rice Crispy treats is easy! We typically just cover the 9×13 pan with aluminum foil. If you want to go ahead and have treats cut up, you can store the pieces in an airtight container or in plastic wrap and store at room temperature for 2-3 days.

How Your Kids Can Be Involved

We love how easy it is to make rice krispie treats, and kids would love helping you make them!

They could measure the cereal, stir in the butter or marshmallow cream with your supervision, and also help pat down the delicious mixture into the pan!

It’s always fun to lick the spoon too! Since the fluff is so sticky – it’s about like having a mini treat on the spoon! Yum!
