How the Samsung filter indicator works

How to remove the red filter light on samsung refrigerator

The filter light is only available to Samsung fridges with ice and water dispensers. Its function is to alert the user when to change the water filter.

It flashes 3 different lights, which have different meanings. See below for the guide.

GREEN/BLUE:

  • Meaning: Water is good for use.
  • Action needed: N/A

Note: In the latest Samsung fridge models, the filter light indicator remains OFF (no light) instead of green or blue.

ORANGE:

  • Meaning: Filter has been used for 5 months already/has reached 450 gal (2046 L).
  • Action needed: Replace the water filter as soon as possible.

RED:

  • Meaning: Filter has been used for 5 months or longer/has reached 500 gal (2273 L).
  • Action needed: Replace the water filter immediately.

“Is the filter light indicator really that important?”

If you’re sensitive about your health and want clean and safe drinking water…

Yes, it’s essential.

Why?

Well, you can only tell if the water isn’t safe for drinking if:

  • It tastes different.
  • There are tiny particles on it.
  • Its color has slightly changed.

And this happens when the water is already highly-contaminated.

I mean, you wouldn’t want that to happen, don’t you?

So, to ensure clean and safe drinking water pay attention to your fridge’s filter light indicator.

Once it turns orange, make sure to get a water filter replacement as soon as you can.

5 tips to maintain your Samsung refrigerator

#1: Change the water filter every 3 to 6 months

Do you want fresh and filtered water at all times?

Then, make sure to change the water filter every 3 to 6 months. Or once the filter light indicator turns orange or red.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Turn OFF the water supply.
  2. Open the fridge door.
  3. Open the water filter cover.
  4. Rotate the water filter counterclockwise to unlock it.
  5. Pull out the water filter.
  6. Insert the replacement.
  7. Rotate it clockwise to secure.
  8. Close the water filter cover.
  9. Close the fridge door.
  10. Turn ON the water supply.

Note: The steps may vary slightly depending on your fridge model and water filter type.

#2: Clean the water dispenser

A white film may form in your fridge’s water dispenser over time.

That white film is minerals from the water, which can collect dirt and dust.

So, to prevent that from happening, make sure to clean the water dispenser regularly.

To do that:

  1. Push down and remove the water dispensers.
  2. Clean it using water and mild soap.
  3. Air dry the dispenser.
  4. Return it from the fridge.

Note: You can also use vinegar or baking soda as replacements for the mild soap. These two ingredients are excellent in removing residues and unpleasant odors.

#3: Defrost the freezer once in 1 to 2 weeks

You may think that ice build-ups in the freezer aren’t much of a problem.

But it can actually cause water leakage over time and mess up with the fridge’s temperature sensor.

To prevent that, defrost the freezer once in 1 to 2 weeks.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Unplug the refrigerator.
  2. Open the freezer door.
  3. Turn the temperature dial to “Defrost.”
  4. Let the ice build-ups melt.

Pro tip: Place a fan in front of the freezer to speed up the defrosting process.

#4: Vacuum the condenser coils

Another way to maintain your refrigerator is to clean the condense coils. Which are responsible for keeping your fridge cool.

Since the condenser coils are in the back of the fridge, they can accumulate dirt, dust, and debris over time.

These things can affect the condenser’s performance. And cause your fridge not to cool efficiently.

That being said, vacuum the condenser coils at least twice a year to ensure optimal performance.

Cleaning these will require you to access the fridge’s back panel. So, do it when there are little to no food supplies in your appliance to avoid spoilage.

#5: Replace the door seal if necessary

Also, make sure to inspect your fridge’s door seal. And replace it if necessary.

Doing this is important to avoid warm air from entering the unit, which causes moisture.

You should replace the door seal if:

  • There are gaps in it.
  • Its edges are bent or worn out.
  • The fridge isn’t closing properly.
