How to turn off blocking unknown numbers

Apple calls the feature "silence unknown callers" and it does just as the name implies. The feature is off by default, and for good reason. Not every phone call we get is spam. Whether it's a call from work, your kids' school or your plumber, we don't always know the number that's calling us.

If you haven't installed iOS 13 yet, make sure you sit down and get your iPhone ready before you do. Then, after you've installed the update, look through our complete guide to iOS 13, complete with hidden features

How to turn off blocking unknown numbers

With a simple setting, the only time your phone should ring is when someone you know is calling you.

To silence unknown callers:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Find and select Phone from the list of options.
  3. Scroll down until you find Silence Unknown Callers and slide the switch to the On position.

With the feature enabled, the only time an incoming call will make your iPhone ring is if the phone number is found in your Contacts, recent outgoing calls, or is a Siri Suggestions (sourced from the Mail or Messages apps). Any other calls will go directly to voicemail, where the caller can then leave a message.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — How many of those annoying robocalls do you get a day? Believe it or not, they’re reportedly declining, though people still received nearly 46 billion robocalls last year. And you might say one is too many.

In 2020 there were actually fewer robocalls than in the previous two years, according to the blocking and tracking service YouMail. The drop is due to improved blocking technology, increased enforcement, and the coronavirus pandemic.

There’s an app called Nomorobo that claims to block robocalls for $2 a month. Other call-blocking apps include Hiya, Mr. Number, and Robokiller.

But Consumer Reports says the anti-robocall tools provided by your mobile carrier might be an even better option.

"For the most part, consumers don’t have to do anything to get these services to work. Calls that are legit will be allowed to ring. And calls that aren’t will either be blocked or show up with an alert," said Octavio Blanco, Consumer Reports Editor.

SILENCE ALL UNKNOWN CALLS

CR says you can also try a more drastic step by setting your phone to allow calls only from the people in your contacts list. But with this option, you’ll have to update your contacts list often to avoid missing important calls.

For iPhones with iOS 13 or later, go to Settings, Phone, then scroll down, tap “Silence Unknown Callers,” and turn on the feature.

For Android, tap the phone icon usually found at the bottom of your home screen. Then at the top right corner of the screen, tap the three dots, Settings, then Blocked Numbers. Then enable “Block Calls From Unidentified Callers” by tapping the toggle switch on the right.

Depending on your phone and carrier, Consumer Reports says you might have to manually activate the call-blocking services.

I get an average of 12 phone calls a day, and 75% of them are usually spam. It's either a robot telling me about credit card debt I don't have or a human asking me to buy something I don't need. I assume, anyway, because of course I hardly ever answer a call I don't recognize on my iPhone.

As for my Android phone, which is a Samsung Galaxy J8 (yes, two phones, work thing), I don't have that problem, because I have the phone set to block all unknown numbers.

Here's how to do the same on your Android.
