Page 1. Preface.

I’d never given much thought to how I would die — though I’d had reason enough in the last few months — but even if I had, I would not have imagined it like this.

Page 7. Charlie wasn’t comfortable expressing his emotions out loud. I inherited that from him.

Page 10. I didn’t relate well to people my age. Maybe the truth was that I didn’t relate well to people, period . . . Maybe there was a glitch in my brain. (Well, Bella only related well to vampires and werewolves. 🙂 There was a glitch in her brain, since she’s the only one whose mind Edward couldn’t read and even the Volturi couldn’t mess with her mind.)

Page 14. I stuffed everything in my bag, slung the strap over my shoulder, and sucked in a huge breath. I can do this, I lied to myself feebly. No one was going to bite me. (She was just gonna meet vampires, who by way, didn’t bite her, well, except for James.)

Page 23. He stared at me again, meeting my eyes with the strangest expression on his face — it was hostile, furious. I looked away quickly, shocked, going red again.
He was leaning away from me, sitting on the extreme edge of his chair and averting his face like he smelled something bad.
Inconspiciously, I sniffed my hair. It smelled like strawberries, the scent of my favorite shampoo.
(It was actually the smell of Bella’s blood that was bothering Edward. It smelled so good to him that he was trying so hard to resist killing her right there and then.)

Page 24. He was glaring down at me again, his black eyes full of revulsion. As I flinched away from him, shrinking against my chair, the phrase if looks could kill suddenly ran through my mind. (His eyes were black. That means he was thirsty. And yeah, he could have killed her. 🙂 )

Page 50. “My face is so easy to read — my mother calls me her open book,” I frowned.
“On the contrary, I find you very difficult to read.”
“You must be a good reader then,” I replied.
“Usually.” He smiled widely, flashing a set of perfect, ultrawhite teeth.
(Edward can read everybody’s minds, except Bella’s.)

Pages 56-67. The Phenomenon. The accident with Tyler’s van. Bella discovered Edward’s abilities. Super speed and super strength.

Page 65. “Why did you even bother?” I asked frigidly. (Bother saving her life)
“I don’t know,” he whispered.

Page 67. That was the first night I dreamed of Edward Cullen. (The first of many nights)

Page 72. Mike asked Bella if she was gonna ask him to the dance. Later Edward told Bella that he felt jealous of Mike and that night was the first time he watched Bella sleep in her bedroom. (Some people think that’s freaky, I mean a boy watching a girl he likes sleeping. I think it’s romantic. 🙂 But of course in reality, you wouldn’t want somebody watching you at night, but this is just fiction. 🙂 )

Page 74. “It’s better if we’re not friends,” he explained. “Trust me.” (Because he was a vampire.)

Page 100. The smell of blood made Bella sick. Isn’t that interesting? Because later she would want to become a vampire so badly.

Page 118. Bella met Jacob Black.

Page 130. Bella had a nightmare after hearing Jacob’s scary stories. In her dream, Jacob turned into a werewolf and Edward into a vampire, with fangs. If she only knew 🙂

Page 134. Bella came across the Danag, a Filipino vampire, while searching about vampires on the internet. The Danag was also mentioned in Breaking Dawn.

Pages 138-139. Bella was in the forest at twilight when she realized that Edward was a vampire.

Page 158. Bella encountered a group of men in Port Angeles. There was a mention of pepper spray, but she didn’t have it. It was under her bed at Charlie’s house. In the movie, she used the pepper spray on James.

Page 170. “I feel very safe with you.” I confessed, mesmerized into telling the truth again. (If she only knew that he was a vampire and she shouldn’t feel safe with him at all.)

Page 174. “You’re not a magnet for accidents — that’s a broad enough classification. You are a magnet for trouble. If there is anything dangerous within a ten-mile radius, it will invariably find you.”

Page 175. “You’re number was up the first time I met you.” (Because he could have killed her that first time, if not for his super self control.)

Page 181. “My mind doesn’t work right? I’m a freak?”
“I hear voices in my mind and you’re worried that you’re the freak,” he laughed. 🙂

Page 182. “I tried to flirt — it worked better than I thought it would.”
“I’d like to have seen that.” He chuckled darkly. “And you accuse me of dazzling people — poor Jacob Black.”

“No,” I said softly. “It doesn’t matter to me what you are.”
A hard, mocking edge entered his voice. “You don’t care if I’m a monster? If I’m not human?”

Page 185. “How old are you?”
“Seventeen,” he answered promptly.
“And how long have you been seventeen?”
“A while,” he admitted at last.

Pages 185-186. Vampire myths:
They can only come out during night.
They get burned by the sun.
They sleep in coffins.
They only drink human blood.

Page 187. “Tell me why you hunt animals instead of people.”
“I don’t want to be a monster.”

Page 188. The Cullens called themselves vegetarians. It’s an inside joke. Because they drink animal blood instead of human blood.

Page 192. “Don’t go in the woods alone. I’m not always the most dangerous thing out there.”

Page 195. About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him — and I didn’t know how potent that part might be — that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

Page 208. “Do you truly believe that you care for me more than I do for you?” he murmured, leaning closer to me as he spoke, his dark golden eyes piercing.
I tried to remember how to exhale. I had to look away before it came back to me.
“You’re doing it again,” I muttered.
His eyes opened wide with surprise. “What?”
“Dazzling me,” I admitted, trying to concentrate as I looked back at him.

Page 216. “Are you like a bear, too?
“More like the lion, or so they tell me.”
“Is that something I might get to see?”
“Absolutely not!” (Well, she did see him hunt in Breaking Dawn, when she finally was changed to a vampire.)

Pages 232-233. “It’s twilight,” Edward murmured, looking at the western horizon, obscured as it was with clouds. His voice was thoughtful, as if his mind were somewhere far away. I stared at him as he gazed unseeingly out the windshield.

I was still staring when his eyes suddenly shifted back to mine.

“It’s the safest time of day for us,” he said, answering the unspoken question in my eyes. “The easiest time. But also the saddest, in a way . . . the end of another day, the return of the night. Darkness is so predictable, don’t you think?” He smiled wistfully.

“I like the night. Without the dark, we’d never see the stars,” I frowned. “Not that you see them here much.”

He laughed, and the mood abruptly lightened. (Well you won’t see the sun and the stars much in cloudy Forks.)

Pages 260-285. Chapter 13. Confessions. Edward and Bella spent the day at the meadow where they revealed about their feelings to each other.

Page 260. Edward in the sunlight was shocking. I couldn’t get used to it, though I’d been staring at him all afternoon. His skin, white despite the faint flush from yesterday’s hunting trip, literally sparkled, like thousands of tiny diamonds were embedded in the surface…. Page 266. “It’s not only your company I craved! Never forget that!” (He craves your blood, too.)

Pages 267-268 “I’m your brand of heroin?” Edward explained to Bella how her scent is so appealing to him.

Page 269. Edward told Bella how he felt the first day he met her. How hard he tried to resist jumping at her and stopping himself from killing her.

Page 273. “You are the most important thing to me now. The most important thing to me ever.”

Page 274. “I would rather die than stay away from you.”
“And so the lion fell in love with the lamb.”
“What a stupid lamb.”
“What a sick, masochistic lion.”

Page 275. Bella asked Edward why he can sometimes be so close to her and sometimes he had to run away. She wanted to find out what it was that she’d do. She wanted to make it easier for him. It was the smell of her throat.

Pages 275-276. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat. I was quite unable to move, even if I’d wanted to.

(Then he also listened to her heart.)

… “It won’t be so hard again,” he said with satisfaction.

Page 278. I have human instincts — they may be buried deep, but they’re there.

Page 282. Edward and Bella’s first kiss. (kilig) It happened when they went back to the truck after visiting Edward’s meadow.

“I was thinking there was something I wanted to try.” And he took my face in his hands again. . . . He hesitated — not in the normal way, the human way. . . . Edward hesitated to test himself, to see if this was safe, to make sure he was still in control of his need. . . . And then his cold, marble lips pressed very softly against mine. . . . What neither of us was prepared for was my response.

Page 283. “I’m stronger than I thought. It’s nice to know.” (Strong in controlling himself from hurting Bella)
“I wish I could say the same. I’m, sorry.” (She was referring to her reaction to Edward’s kiss.)
“You are only human, after all.”

Page 287. Edward told Bella how he became a vampire. He was 17 in 1918 and dying of Spanish influenza when Carlisle saved him.

Page 291. Edward told Bella about Alice. She doesn’t have any memories of her human life. She woke up alone. Whoever created her walked away.

Page 293. Edward told Bella that he watched her in her sleep.

Pages 299-300. “It seems to be . . . much easier for you, now, to be close to me. Why is that, do you think?”
“Mind over matter.”

Page 302. “Isn’t it supposed to be like this?” He smiled. “The glory of first love and all that. It’s incredible, isn’t it, the difference between reading about something, seeing it in pictures, and experiencing it?”
“Very different,” I agreed. “More forceful than I’d imagined.”

Edward told Bella how he was jealous when Mike asked Bella to the dance. That was the first night Edward came to Bella’s bedroom.

Page 304. “But jealousy . . . it’s a strange thing. So much more powerful than I would have thought. And irrational . . . ”

“I’m new at this; you’re resurrecting the human in me, and everything feels stronger because it’s fresh.”

Page 306. “Just because I’m resisting the wine doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the bouquet,” he whispered. “You have a very floral smell, like lavender … or freesia,” he noted. “It’s mouthwatering.”

Page 307. Edward can read minds. Alice can see the future.
Carlisle has a theory … he believes that we all bring something of our strongest human traits with us into the next life, where they are intensified – like our minds, and our senses. . . . “Carlisle brought his compassion. Esme brought her ability to love passionately. Emmett brought his strength, Rosalie her … tenacity. Or you could call it pigheadedness… Jasper is very interesting. He was quite charismatic in his first life, able to influence those around him to see things his way. Now he is able to manipulate the emotions of those around him…”

Pages 309-311. Bella was curious if vampires do it? If Edward is attracted to her in ‘that’ way at all.
“I may not be a human, but I am a man.” 🙂

Page 363. Edward and Bella’s second kiss. “Damn it Bella, you’ll be the death of me.” (She was getting aggressive.) 🙂

Page 366. It was the first time he’d said he loved me — in so many words.

Page 398. “How can you kill a vampire?”
“The only way to be sure is to tear him to shreds, and then burn the pieces.” (This is how Edward killed Victoria and how the Cullens and the werewolves killed the newborns in Eclipse.)

Page 403. Edward kissed Bella before they separated to mislead James.

Pages 410-411. Alice and Jasper explained to Bella why they were risking their lives to save Bella from James. Alice said:
“It’s been almost a century that Edward’s been alone. Now he’s found you. You can’t see the changes that we see, we who have been with him for so long. Do you think any of us want to look into his eyes for the next hundred years if he loses you?”

Page 413. Alice explained to Bella how one becomes a vampire.

Page 447. Bella learned from James that Alice was in an asylum in the 1920s. When a vampire found out that James was after her, he stole her from the asylum and changed her into a vampire. James then destroyed the old vampire and left Alice alone.

Page 450. James broke Bella’s leg.

Page 454. We found out that James bit Bella’s hand. She feels like it’s burning.

Pages 458-480. Chapter 24. An Impasse. (Impasse – a position from which there is no escape; a problem with no apparent solution; a deadlock.)

Page 460. “How did you do it?” (Bella was asking Edward how he controlled himself from drinking all of Bella’s blood when he was trying to suck out James’ venom from her hand.)
“It was impossible … to stop,” he whispered. “Impossible. But I did.”
He looked up finally, with half a smile. “I must love you.”

Page 462. “Afraid of a needle. Oh, a sadistic vampire, intent on torturing her to death, sure, no problem, she runs off to meet him. An IV, on the other hand…” 🙂

Page 473. “You told me how you stopped . . . Now I want to know why,” I demanded.
“Why?” he repeated warily.
“Why you did it. Why didn’t you just let the venom spread? By now I would be just like you.”

“I’ll be the first to admit that I have no experience with relationships,” I said. “But it just seems logical … a man and a woman have to be somewhat equal … as in, one of them can’t always be swooping in and saving the other one. They have to save each other equally.”

Page 474. “I can’t always be Lois Lane,” I insisted. “I want to be Superman, too.”

Page 475. “Renee has always made the choices that work for her — she’d want me to do the same. And Charlie’s resilient, he’s used to being on his own. I can’t take care of them forever. I have my own life to live.”
“Exactly,” he snapped. “And I won’t end it for you.”

Page 477. “Alice already saw it, didn’t she?” I guessed. “That’s why the things she says upset you. She knows I’m going to be like you … someday.”

Page 473-477. Bella’s been telling Edward that she wanted to be a vampire but he wouldn’t hear of it.

Page 477. “So where does that leave us?” I wondered.
He chuckled humorlessly. “I believe it’s called an impasse.”

Page 486. He sighed. “When someone wants to kill you, you’re brave as a lion — and then when someone mentions dancing …” He shook his head. 🙂

Page 487. “This looks like a horror movie waiting to happen,” I snickered. (Like Carrie. 🙂 )

Page 490. This is at the prom when Jacob was dancing with Bella.
“Well, I hope you’re enjoying yourself, at least. Seen any thing you like” I teased, nodding toward a group of girls lined up against the wall like pastel confections.
“Yeah,” he sighed. “But she’s taken.” (Jacob already had feelings for Bella. And this scene reminds me of the one in Breaking Dawn on Bella’s wedding day, when Jacob showed up in favor to Edward as a wedding present to Bella.)

Page 495. “Twilight, again,” he murmured. “Another ending. No matter how perfect the day is, it always has to end.”
“Some things don’t have to end,” I muttered through my teeth, instantly tense.
“I brought you to the prom,” he said slowly, finally answering my question, “because I don’t want you to miss anything. I don’t want my presence to take anything away from you, if I can help it. I want you to be human… “

Page 496. “Well … I assumed it was some kind of … occasion. But I didn’t think it would be some trite human thing … prom!” I scoffed.

Page 497. “So ready for this to be the end,” he murmured, almost to himself, “for this to be the twilight of your life, though your life has barely started. You’re ready to give up everything.”

“It’s not the end, it’s the beginning,” I disagreed under my breath.

Page 498. Ending of Twilight:

I touched his face. “Look,” I said. “I love you more than everything else in the world combined. Isn’t that enough?”

“Yes, it is enough,” he answered, smiling. “Enough for forever.”

And he leaned down to press his cold lips once more to my throat.
