I HATE WASHING MY HAIR. Setting that aside I would probably have rated this 3.5, I was pleasantly surprised enjoying it more than I thought I might. 1/2 self help, 1/2 memoir - an easy positive read which I related to some parts
of, but for a lot it was fairly un-relatable without being a middle class mother/business women. Pretty good, but probs not made for me.
Jul 30, 2021 Rachna rated it really liked it It helps to come back to a good book after a long day, which looks and feels like a warm sunshine company and you don’t mind spending some alone time with it. If in Doubt Wash your Hair written by @anyahindmarch has been that book for me in the recent days.
This was a random pick at the "New Book" section of my local library. I sometimes like to pick books which i normally wouldn't read. The physical paperback edition only mentions the first part of the title (If In Doubt, Wash Your Hair) skipping the "A Manual for Life" found in the Kindle edition. Hence I didn't know what to expect as i had never heard of

I'm happier when i am organised & have some sort of routine** 2. To-do lists "David Allen's motto that your brain is for 'having ideas, not holding them.' If you can do a 'mind-sweep' and get everything you need to remember out of your brain and onto a list, you can relax in the knowledge that it is all captured and won't be forgotten." I love lists and keep 2 digital diaries (work & persona) and an old fashion journal to jot down to-do lists, thoughts & feelings. - break down your lists to small steps if the "action" on your list is too big/overwhelming. **I'm a big believe of "to-do lists. It's very helpful** 3. Empty Inbox "Next Action insists that your email inbox should always be empty" **fully agree. My inbox is generally empty (or if there's too much to do, then i orgnise my inbox using colour labels & add the emails by priority on my work to-list** Chapter 8: Be Yourself: Everyone Else Is Already Taken Chapter 9: How Many More Christmases? When I requested a copy of this book from Bloomsbury India, I was under the impression that this is a self-help book. I am not a big fan of non-fiction, but I occasionally do
find myself flipping the pages of a random self-help title. This is an autobiography/memoir (not sure) which also of course acts like a rather unusually helpful self-help book. Anya is a famous fashion designer based out of the UK and she is pretty popular. For some reason, I had no clue about her before this book. Anya is a famous fashion designer based out of the UK and she is pretty popular. For some reason, I had no clue about her before this book. I think I live under a rock sometimes... XD Anyway, so in here she kind of outlines how she has been able to
function and manage her life - which includes shouldering the responsibilities not only at her work but also looking after her 5 children, husband and herself. For anyone who's interested in topics like parenting, this book is a MUST HAVE for you. I feel that Anya has not only given out very valuable lessons and tips and tricks when it comes to being a parent who's also working but in general as well. She really loves her children and a large part of her life is spent making sure how they
are all safe, cared for and know that they are loved. The foundation of a happy family is exactly that. Even though she covers mental health, daily routine and lifestyle, love and friendship, society, work and pretty much everything else in between - I personally enjoyed the parenting section and parts of the book perhaps the most. It's probably due to the fact that I really want to have kids someday. And also that I constantly worry how I don't mess up at parenting because I not only
realise how important a role of a parent is + how the kind of relationship you build with them growing up is going to determine the kind of relationship they have with you when you are old. I absolutely loved this book. I have underlined lots of quotes and highlighted some sections that I really liked and connected with. This is one of those books that you can revisit anytime and read any page and it would still be interesting and insightful. Thank you Bloomsbury India for sending
across a copy.
Such a lovely read, and would definitely read again. I loved hearing her pearls of wisdom from a life well lived and what she's taken away as the most important things to enjoy, cherish and learn from. Jun 14, 2022 Ruth rated it really liked it Great advice, inspiration and practical direction … would opt for reading over audio!
Nice little book but found it unrelateable unless you’re Anya Hindmarsh. We dont live similar lives. Some of the things she said i found out of touch however i do overall like what she stands for and think her brand and business is top notch
Bought on the strength of hearing her being interviewed on the radio and liking her. I like her still - Anya comes across as a lovely woman. The book is nothing startling or new and a bit too much about motherhood for me (not to mention slightly middle class) but it was pleasant enough.
dnf, I did not enjoy the endless tips on how to start a business

The book “If in doubt, wash your hair ” is a memoir by Anya Hindmarch, a globally renowned entrepreneur, the founder of an award winning global brand known for it’s craftmanship and creativity, a mother of five and also a step mother. In this book, she shares her life experiences from the challenges of managing business, family and her own personal happiness at the same time. This book contains nine
insightful chapters packed with valuable and practical advice on parenting, love, relationships, physical and mental health, organisation, entrepreneurship, time management, self care and a small dose of humor in between. Particularly, I loved Anya’s views and advice on parenting, marraige, divorce and entrepreneurship. She describes her every stage of parenting and why it’s important to be ‘real’ to your childern. She says that there no perfect or exact method of parenting and advises parents
to look for an approach that works for them and their children. After all, she thinks that children will be fine if they’ve honest, consistent, caring, understanding, listening and supportive parents. Anya advises people to be realistic whether it’s about marriage or divorce. She also explains how unrealistic ideals defined by others instill self doubt in us. She illuminates how creativity and communication are incredibly important in every business, what kind of person makes a good entrepreneur
and the concept – triangle of pain. There are many quotes and paragraphs in this book that are relatable & thought-provoking. The best thing about this book is that it’s enlightening without being preachy (which is the first reason that makes me love a non-fiction book).
Aug 01, 2021 Rachel rated it it was amazing Really enjoyed this brilliant, inspiring and empowering book!! Anya
Hindmarch is a world famous businesswoman, entrepreneur, CEO, and a mother to five children (3 of whom are her step children who she's looked after since they were small). In the early 2000s, she created an it bag that everyone had to have, known as the "I'm Not a Plastic Bag" bag. I remember even my mum had one! "If In Doubt, Wash Your Hair" is her best piece of advice, and the title of her very first non-fiction. This guide to "If In Doubt, Wash Your Hair" is her best piece of advice, and the title of her very first non-fiction. This guide to life
consists of the best advice she's received over the years (for context, she's in her early 50s and started her business as a teenager!) as well as all the trials and tribulations she and her blended family have gone through. The book is brimming with her tips and ideas on how to be a working mother/parent, how to run an organisation, how to be more organised and tidy, how to look after your kids (and ideas on how to get other people involved), how to be a step-parent, how to be a partner,
how to find a mentor, how to care for ageing parents, and how to be yourself authentically (and trust yourself), and how to let go of the idea of perfection. Really enjoyed this sensible yet very warm and comforting read, it felt like a whirlwind stop of all the easy, great life advice you would ever need in one handy guide. I love her positive, can-do, forward thinking, planning attitude, and reading this really inspires me - reminds me that while mountains are hard to climb,
they're not insurmountable and with every hill we overcome, we will be able to better tackle future hurdles and take on more challenges. There are so many wonderful lines in this book, it's incredibly accessible and easy to read too (she talks about her dyslexia as well!). Anya Hindmarch really covers a lot and delivers. This book definitely didn't disappoint and was a great read - much gratitude to @definitelybooks for this review copy :) Get yours from your favourite local bookstore!
Mar 20, 2022 maybemacy rated it really liked it Anya shares about her journey as a businesswoman in
fashion, most notably for the “I’m not a plastic bag” campaign, her life experiences and juggling life as a working mother (as do many successful career women). Her writing style is succinct and clear, with lists at certain points just like her personality. It’s motivating and straightforward like speaking to a friend. Although some points were cliche and repetitive but I guess that’s life and certain experiences are common in most autobiographies you read. It was like speaking to an older friend, reading this book. I didn’t feel there were many super inspiring points although I had a few snippets of reminders to self I picked up on, which was really what I needed. Things that you thought you probably knew but tend to forget when life gets mundane and
routine. Good for a beginner to this genre, as it’s not too complicated and easy to understand. My personal preference would have been something that provokes more reflection and thought. Sharing a few snippets of what left an impression on me; on decluttering, being your authentic self, selecting who you surround yourself with, humility and a more refreshing one - how COVID changed life in a good way. I guess that’s something very real to most who have been feeling languished in recent
years (yes, it’s been that long). So a nice reminder to look on the bright side and stop complaining about how COVID stole our time. Note to self again hah. It’s a cliche convo topic by now, stop blaming the pandemic for everything.

the memo. Anya Hindmarch shares great advices for women especially mommies with career to build. Although I am not yet a career woman, far from being a mom, I have no problem taking in her words. I love that she doesn’t speak so highly of herself, she’s so humble (I really want to meet her in real life!) and her life stories that she shared are perfectly flawed aka normal. Every family has their own moments when -parents are afraid if they gave Every family has their own
moments when -parents are afraid if they gave more affection to their younger child than the older ones And Chapter 5 is my fav! She shared practical business tips and what are the behaviour that entrepreneurs should have. According to her, “your brand is simply how
you behave”. If you are in any way planning a business, pick this up! 💯 Anya Hindmarch is the epitome of women in business. As a reader, I don’t feel pressured to be perfectionist, living unrealistic life. Instead, I now understand that fear & excitement are the same thing. You just have to embrace it. It’s a non fiction book but definitely suits beginners because of the simple writing style. Big thanks to Pansing Distribution for sending me this review copy in return
for an honest review.

Motherhood (the parts that I was listening to the hardest), a part of an immediate and wider family, a business woman, a leader, a partner in love, a part of a pandemic and environmentally challenged world. With chapters such as ‘I would label my children if I could’ (referring to printed labels, although Brother machines are always
better than Dymo…) of course I was going to relate - a role model with honesty but still in a fabulously effortless Whistles outfit and naturally falling smoothed hair - I’m more of a fan than I expected to be, and I’m glad that I switched from the print version to audio on this to get the wonderful slightly Sloany but understandably relatable exhausted and confused tone in places. And one day I will still get that ‘I am not a plastic bag’ bag…! “Overall, never forget to be kind, and
never never take the emotion out of it”
a breeze reading! it is so easy to understand on tips that she provided. at first, i thought i will disliked it since she talks more on motherhood but i went through
chapters by chapters, she also provided tips on how to handle work and parenthood and quite surprising, she wrote this book as if she talks to her friends. i can feel her friendliness even it is in the book. the tone is so chilly and none any rigid words or sentence whatsoever. her tips might be not so new and been heard and read fr her tips might be not so new and been heard and read from another book but the example she'd given on how she applied it are very crystal clear. i don't have any
problem to understand her writing at all. very motherly and at the same time, upheld herself as a professional and career woman. this book is very suitable for woman who wants to balance her work life and family and also highly suggested for non-fiction newbies reader. oh and this book has to be read with your mind in relaxing position or else you may find it jumbling here and there. but the point is that it is meant to be here and there because this is a chill self help book.
A 3.5 rating really from me. Anya has a chatty and easily accessible style which made it easy to read. I was interested to hear snippets of her life and career, delivered by part memoir and part self-help style. Some of her ideas about how to deal with older teens resonated with me however she is coming at life from quite a different angle to most, with nannies and help for her family (also, her husband who seems to sacrifice quite a bit to support and fit in with AH’s wishes!). Dec 08, 2021 Nina Krebs rated it really liked it Really enjoyed this one, finally came round to read the last chapter today. Hindmarch manages to give advice coming from her own life and experiences but in the kindest way - not „do this do that“ but more from a personal perspective. While it’s hard for me to relate to the life of a 20something newly step-mom who’s founding her own business I still found her ambition and resilience quite impressive and agree with most of her personal opinions/values.
Got this on Audible’s £1 sale solely based on the book title. Now I finally own a piece of Anya Hindmarch after failing to get a “I’m Not A Plastic Bag” 15 years ago. I don’t think I’m the target audience – she talks so much about parenting and entrepreneurship which aren’t relevant for me at this stage (or ever). Other advice is nothing you haven’t heard of already, but big sis advice always gives me this warm fuzzy feeling. And that piece of advice in the title is easily worth the £1.

Enjoyable for a non fiction book! I found this very relatable which I think is why I enjoyed it and found some great tips in there. I saw other reviewers saying it was very un relatable… but I think if you’re a woman, you have your own business (especially a creative one) or you’re trying to manage a work life balance then it’s got some great info and reads well.
