Based on a True Story

I came across this film through my Lifetime Movie Club subscription. I've seen Megan Follows before in Reign and love her as an actress so I decided to give this movie a shot. It's an amazing story, and the cast did a wonderful job telling it. I never thought I would have a shred of pity for anyone who would kidnap another person(especially a child) but they shine a light on the diminished mental capacity and loneliness. He was truly alone and if someone had tried to help him or reached out to him to at least offer friendship or kindness I think he would have taken a different path in life.

Based upon the fictional novel Hatchet

Decent little movie. Oh and by the way, a previous reviewer titled their review “based on a true story”. Not sure how they got that mistaken impression, but be assured this movie is based upon a fictional book called Hatchet, written for young adults—which happens to have won a Newbery (sp?) Award in the mid 80s.

This was the first time I've ordered something that came from another Amazon user, in used condition. Other than the outside case of the movie, you'd never know it was used!

Our son enjoyed watching this video as a complement to the book, Hatchet.

I've been looking for this video for years, just never realized it was called "A Cry in the Wild". I bought this to show my 5th grade class after reading "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen (the movie is based on this book). I was a bit disappointed it was so expensive, it's a pretty old movie but must be in demand somewhere!

I purchased this to show to a classrooom of students after completing the novel, Hatchet. The movie had several places in it where the film was not acceptable. The students and I were very disappointed.

Product description

To hear Bill Mason tell about the making of this feature film (he is also the narrator) is to share with him his affection for his camera-quarry: the big northern timber wolves and pure-white Arctic wolves. What he brings to the screen is some unexcelled film footage and a great depth of lore about these wary, intelligent creatures of the Canadian wilds. Filming was done over three years in the Northwest Territories, British Columbia, the high Arctic, and near his Gatineau Hills, Québec home where he kept and observed three grown wolves and, eventually, the litter of cubs that provides some of the film's most engaging sequences.
Bill Mason was an award-winning naturalist, author, artist, filmmaker, and conservationist, noted primarily for his popular canoeing books, films, and art. He was born in 1929 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and graduated from the University of Manitoba School of Art in 1951. He developed and refined canoeing strokes and river-running techniques, especially for complex whitewater situations. He canoed all of his adult life, ranging widely over the wilderness areas of Canada and the United States. Called "wilderness artist," in one book about him, Mason left a legacy that includes books, films and artwork on canoeing and wild nature. He died of cancer in 1988.
