Is iPhone 13 Pro Max scratch proof?

Apple iPhone 13 series has recently made its way to the international market and the company has bragged everything about the newly launched smartphone. The flagship phones come with improved camera sensors, new colours, revamped camera positioning, and of course the hefty price tag. However the company never discussed anything about the durability of the phones, so the question arises if the iPhone 13 series is durable enough to spend USD 1000 on it. To answer this question JerryRigEverything is back with another durability test video of the top-end iPhone 13 Pro Max. Let’s have a closer look at the test performed by Jerry.

As we all know JerryRigEverthing is a popular YouTube channel where Jerry post some hardcore durability test videos on smartphones, gadgets, and more. In the latest video the iPhone 13 Pro Max has gone through scratch and bend-test, it seems the flagship smartphone stood strong against Jerry’s durability tests.

Like always Jerry first put the smartphone under scratch test where he discovered that the scratches at level 6 are faint compared to another phone. According to him, it seems that the ceramic shield is a super solid improvement over the normal tempered smartphone glass. Furthermore, Jerry added that the side of the iPhone 13 Pro Max is made from stainless steel at Mohs 5, which is much harder than aluminium and difficult to scratch.

“It’s hard for my stainless steel razor blade to even bite into the stainless steel sides of the phone. I’m a fan,” says Jerry during the video.

In the video, you can witness him struggling to make scratches on the side of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Do note that the protective glass on the camera sensors gets scratches starting at level 6 and at level 8 the scenario becomes worse, so it is better to take some extra care of the camera sensors while using the phone. Jerry also did the burn test on the display of the phone, which seems to be impressive. The OLED display’s pixels didn’t even burn after keeping a lighter on it for over a minute, the phone seems working perfectly.

The torture ends with the bend-test and the phone remain super solid on all four sides, it seems Apple iPhone 13 series has launched with a very solid build and durability wise you can invest without even a second thought.

If you had any doubts that the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max is a durable phone, go ahead and cast those away. JerryRigEverything's latest video shows the top iPhone being scratched, burned and bend-tested and in keeping with its peers and predecessors, the iPhone 13 Pro Max survived.

There were no surprises. If you're familiar with the JerryRig durability test then the iPhone's screen scratched at a level 6 like any other glass display on a current smartphone, the stainless steel frame's glossy coating scratched with a razor, the phone didn't nudge when bend tested. The burn test was interesting - the iPhone 13 Pro Max' OLED display's pixels didn't burn after nearly a minute over the lighter.

Here's the video in all its gory detail.

My iPhone can scratch extremely easy and there is no screen design protection from small drops, the Ceramic coating is BS it does nothing. I am the most careful person and really disappointed with how easy damage can occur.

I’ve seen this phone move and slip from surfaces that have the tiniest of gradients, be warned, cover your lovely looking iPhone with an ugly case.

I gotta say, since 2009 I have owned an iPod Touch, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 5, iPhone 6s, iPhone XR, and iPhone 12.

Never scratched any of them, have had a screen protector for a marginal amount of time during all these years, am always really careful about my things, and the first one that got scratched ? iPhone 12.

I didn't even get out of my house a lot with this phone, so if anything, it's the one that has had the least chances to damage. I have no idea how the scratch happened either.

I’m also using an iPhone 13 Pro since about a month, without a screen protector, and managed to keep it scratch-free so far.

Nevertheless, while researching the web for similar complains I found one on the Apple Discussion Forums:

“I’ve got a random micro scratch on my iPhone 13 Pro Max screen and I’ve only had it for 3 weeks. I’m totally confused as to where it came from.”

and Reddit:

“iPhone 13 Pro Max screens scratch extremely easily. If you’re the type that usually avoids screen protectors, don’t skip this one.”

Fact: These threads haven’t taken off which most likely means that we’re dealing with isolated cases. However, if you also managed to easily scratch the iPhone 13 don’t hesitate to share it in the comments section!

iPhone 13 Scratch Resistant?

iPhone 13 anti-scratch screen protector
Apple tries to make all its iPhone models hard to scratch and the 2021 flagship make no difference. However, glass, no matter how well coated, is still glass and will scratch in certain situations.

With this article we’re not trying to find out if the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro scratches, because they will all do, but asses if the new models scratch easier than their predecessors.

For example, the Apple Watch 7 scratches extremely easy, according to the numerous reports provided by iPhoneTricks.org readers.

The explanation is physics. Glass can’t be both high drop and scratch resistant. The more crack resistant a screen is, the more vulnerable it is to scratches. Vice-versa, the better the scratch resistance of an iPhone screen the more prone to shattering it becomes!

The Series 7 has a new design with much more slimmer bezels and Apple must have insisted on the strength of the glass. The tradeoff is a vulnerability to scratches. Does this apply to the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro too? The devices come with a smaller notch, but bezels are still the same width.

How To Fix iPhone 13 Scratch

If you managed to scratch your device, I recommend you to learn to live with it. Don’t attempt to polish the screen or perform any other similar fix. You only risk to damage your screen even more.

iPhone 13 Screen Protection

What you can try is to apply a screen protector. If the scratch isn’t too deep it might become unnoticeable as soon as you apply the tempered glass cover.

Of course, it will also protect the screen from additional scratches!

Tip: Pick a good screen protector with low light reflectivity and low discoloration!

iPhone 13 Screen Replacement

The only other way to fix iPhone 13 scratches is by replacing the screen. However, this is a very expensive and complicated procedure. Starting with this model, Apple has made screen replacements by third-party repair shops almost impossible.

Fact: If you opted for AppleCare+ you can replace the screen at an acceptable cost, however I would advise you to save this repair option for screen cracks. Don’t waste it on scratches that you can learn to live with!
