Is Olivia Rodrigo performing at the 2022 VMAs?

Olivia Rodrigo decided not to spend her Sunday at tonight's MTV VMAs despite being one of the night's most heavily-nominated guests. Rodrigo didn't post her whereabouts on social media; her last post featured her in New York City, not far from where the VMAs were.

Rodrigo is nominated tonight for Video of the Year (“Brutal”), Best Pop Song (“Traitor”), Best Longform (“Driving Home 2 U”), and Best Editing (“Brutal”). Rodrigo may have decided, since she is not performing and is either nominated in more minor or hyper-competitive categories, to skip the ceremony.

Rodrigo's last public appearance was just days ago, when she performed “Uptown Girl” with Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden. “Literally because you played her uptown girl… such an honor to perform with one of the best songwriters alive last night. Billy Joel 4 life!!!!! 💘🎸💘🦋” Rodrigo wrote on her Instagram. She was also photographed in New York City on August 26, two days ago.

Rodrigo reflected on her debut album Sour and where her music is going next in a March 2022 interview with ELLE.com.“I have a little distance from them [the songs on Sour] now,” Rodrigo said. “I actually just feel so proud of them and it’s so much fun to sing them now. And I’m just so excited to sing them on tour and hopefully people will sing them back. And I just think when you put them out into the world and they help people and make people happy … it’s not quite as devastating anymore. And it’s a very empowering thing.”

Of that time generally, Rodrigo admitted, “I guess I was just coming to terms with being like a really young person in the industry and feeling weird about it. But I don’t think I feel that way anymore, which is nice.”

The MTV VMAs 2022 took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Sunday, August 28. A number of famous faces from Taylor Swift to Jack Harlow turned up for the event, each with a string of nominations for their work over the past year. There were even a few surprises in store at this year’s event, as is the way with the VMAs, with Johnny Depp making a random appearance as the Moonman.

Olivia Rodrigo was nominated in four categories: Video of the Year (“Brutal”), Best Pop (“Traitor”), Best Longform Video (“Driving Home 2 U”), and Best Editing (“Brutal”).

Unfortunately for Olivia and her fandom, the singer took home now awards at this year’s VMAs.

Viewers react to Olivia’s absence from this year’s VMAs

With many of her fans hoping for Olivia Rodrigo to descend upon the event thanks to her four nominations, it was a big surprise that Liv didn’t show.

One disappointed fan tweeted to the singer: “You better be recording that d*** album since you don’t wanna be at the VMAs.”

But not all fans took it to heart, with some creating a string of joking tweets poking fun at Olivia’s absence from the VMAs 2022:

Olivia Rodrigo has a big week in New York City

Fans were expecting Olivia Rodrigo to be at the MTV VMAs 2022, given that the “Deja Vu” singer has been on the East Coast this month.

Olivia has been in New York City for a pretty special event. On August 24, 2022, Olivia Rodrigo joined Billy Joel onstage at Madison Square Garden for his concert. Together they performed Olivia’s hit “Deja Vu” and Billy’s classic “Uptown Girl”.

Olivia Rodrigo was spotted by paparazzi in New York City days later on August 26, 2022. Celebrity gossip Instagram account Deux Moi posted a fan-taken pic of Olivia and her music producer at a restaurant in New York in the days after her MSG appearance.

This year, the MTV VMAs were held in the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, not far from where Liv has been. This is just a short ride from Manhattan, around 30 minutes. So, it is unclear why Olivia Rodrigo did not make the trip over to Newark for the VMAs, despite being so close. But it looks like she’s having a pretty important musical week in the Big Apple regardless.
