10/10 Two Motors Are Offered

The performance is pretty decent if you opt for the base 1.6-liter turbocharged direct-injection inline-4 motor, which is capable of putting out 180 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. This motor can be had with both FWD and AWD drivetrains and comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The performance is adequate, especially at slow speeds, however, highway driving is not its forte.

If you want more aggressive power delivery, the 2022 Kia K5 comes with the GT trim which offers a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 motor putting out 290 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with this motor, the car managed to do 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds and had a quarter-mile time of 13.7 seconds. Put your foot down in any gear and the impressive torque on offer makes sure that you acquire speed with little to no effort.

9/10 Ride Quality Is Not Sorted

The ride quality of the 2022 Kia K5 is pretty identical to the outgoing 2021 model, which we are not a huge fan of. The ride feels a bit choppy, especially at slow speeds, which is mainly due to the stiff suspension setup on offer. In comparison, the Hyundai Sonata managed to impress us with its pliant ride quality at city speeds.

One of the biggest USPs of a car with a stiff suspension setup is the flat ride quality it offers out on open highways. The body roll is usually minimal, too. However, we found the 2022 K5 to have a bit unsettling ride quality at higher speeds, and the bigger potholes do unsettle the car quite a bit. The suspension doesn't work very silently either.

8/10 Reasonably Fun To Drive

The front end of the Kia K5 comes with the strut suspension setup, and the rear end gets the independent multi-link setup, and it's been tuned to the more sporty side, too. These contribute to impress handling, which could be easily understood while tackling the winding roads. The car corners flat and has an impressive grip level, especially the one with AWD.

The body roll is not very evident and if you opt for the GT trim of the K5, the driving experience put forth is even superior due to the beefier suspension, wider 19" alloy wheels wrapped in 245 section tires, and superb braking behavior. The electric power steering offered an impressive feel and feedback, which is not the case with many of the rivals.

7/10 Excellent Brakes

The braking is a vital aspect of any car and is one of those things that would make or break a deal. When it comes to the K5, the car has nothing to fault about in the braking front. Press the brake pedal gently, and you would be pretty happy with the sharp initial bite on offer. Even under hard braking, the impressive hardware could handle the braking with no issues.

The 2022 Kia K5 comes with 12" front rotors and 12.1" rear rotors for the regular trims. However, the GT trim gets a bigger 13.6" front rotors and 12.8" rear rotors, which helped the car to do the 70-0 mph braking in 163 feet. Even the regular model also braked very well, with no major nose dive and fishtailing under hard braking. All the braking features like ABS, EBD, brake assist, automated emergency braking, etc are standard across the lineup too.

6/10 Beautiful Exterior Design

via Gabriel Vega | HotCars.com

One thing that stands out quite well in the case of the 2022 Kia K5 is the exterior design. The car looks striking from all angles, with classy and futuristic elements all-around, making it look like nothing on the road. The seven exterior colors look ravishing, and the car also gets a few exterior options, helping the car stand out pretty well.

In comparison to the regular-looking Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, 2022 K5's side profile is going to make people fall in love with the sedan, especially with the coupe-Esque rear quarter, imposing 19" alloy wheel design, and LED DRLs that extends to the sides. Multiple character lines are onboard too. The full-width LED taillight, sporty bumper design, and blacked-out elements deserve a mention as well.

5/10 Interior Looks And Feels Top-Notch

The cabin also takes forward the same futuristic and classy design language of the exterior, making it the best-looking cabin of the mid-size sedan segment. Offered for a base MSRP of $23,790, it does manage to look much more expensive than what its price tag suggests, mainly due to the high-quality leather inserts, leather upholstery, and wooden accents.

The dashboard gets a step-up design, with the wooden trim of the dashboard merging cleanly with the door cards. The chrome and silver accents also look very premium. There are eight interior color palettes on offer too, however, some of these can only be opted for if you select the right trim configuration. Nevertheless, the cabin does look much more beautiful than the rivals of the segment.

4/10 Fuel Efficiency Is Similar To The Rivals

If you want top-class fuel efficiency for the mid-size sedan segment, the 2022 Kia K5 should be high up on your consideration. Get the standard 1.6-liter turbo motor mated to the FWD drivetrain to get 29 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway. This gives the car about 562 miles of tank range with a 14.8-gallon fuel tank capacity.

Even the AWD variant does quite well on the frugality front, providing 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. However, get the most powerful GT trim and the fuel efficiency comes down even further to 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. In comparison, the base variant of the Honda Accord managed to do a slightly better 30 mpg in the city, compared to the 29 mpg provided by the K5.

3/10 Fast-Shifting Automatic Transmission

Get the regular 1.6-liter turbocharged motor of the 2022 Kia K5 and you would be pleasantly surprised with the superb 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission on offer. Multiple driving modes and manual mode with steering-mounted paddle shifters are onboard. The shifts are pretty fast for a regular mid-size sedan, and we found it to be smoother than its brother, the Hyundai Sonata.

The transmission holds on to the gear quite well, however, it automatically upshifts at the rev limiter when in manual mode. Even when mashing the throttle, the gearbox doesn't act confused like that of the Toyota Camry. The 8-speed DCT that comes with the Kia K5 GT is even quicker in response. However, it is not as smooth as the torque converter unit.

2/10 Has 5-Star Crash Safety Rating

Being a family sedan, Kia has managed to shove in all the much-needed safety and driver-assistance tech to the 2022 K5. The standard driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and many more. However, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert come as an optional extra.

The build quality is up there with the German offerings and all the exterior and interior panels feel pretty solidly put together, and that would help the car to withstand the impact during an accident. Even the fiber parts like the bumpers and skid plates felt to be of excellent quality. With a 5-star crash safety rating provided by the NHTSA and the top safety pick + title by the IIHS for the 2022 mid-size sedan segment, you wouldn't need to look any further for a safe offering that provides all the versatility of a family sedan.

1/10 Infotainment Comes Loaded With Tech

Similar to the outgoing 2021 model, all the trims except the GT-Line and GT trims come with an 8" touchscreen infotainment system that offers all the bells and whistles like wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming, voice recognition, and many more. With hard buttons and knobs on offer, the interface is very intuitive and there is no major learning curve.

The animation is pretty smooth and the infotainment never lags as well. However, the 10.25" touchscreen infotainment system turned out to be a bit of a disappointment, mainly due to the lack of wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay. What makes it weirder is that the same features are offered as standard with the smaller system. Nevertheless, the interface is never going to disappoint you and the bezels are minimal with this infotainment, making it look more premium. The audio quality of the 12-speaker Bose audio system has nothing to complain about as well.
