The Blue Whisper Part 1 and 2 (与君初相识 and 恰似故人归) have been aired about 2 to 3 months ago but without English subtitles. So, I have been holding myself back from watching it although I can understand a bit of Mandarin. But being a xianxia drama, it would still be difficult to fully understand the dialogues with my basic level of fluency. Hence, I waited for the version with subtitles. Finally, they have been released on YouTube and I binged through the first and second part in 4 days. The Blue Whisper Part 1 and 2 review is as follows.

My rating: 8/10
Episodes: 22 (Part 1) & 20 (Part 2)

Synopsis

The immortal realm is divided into 2 clans which are the Heavenly and Earthly immortals. The Heavenly immortals are supposedly graceful and upright while the Earthly ones tend to be unruly and rebellious. Hence, the Heavenly immortals selected a squad of spiritual masters to tame these Earthly immortals. Love between a spiritual master and an Earthly immortal is strictly prohibited. The strongest spiritual masters can be found in Flower Valley which is headed by Lin Cang Lan.

Yun He is one of the spiritual masters in Flower Valley with a specialty in influencing the Earthly immortals to willingly give up their unruly behavior instead of relying on harsh measures. Her bitter rival is Hao Qing who is Lin Cang Lan’s son. When a merman was captured by Shunde Fairy, he is sent to Flower Valley to be tamed. She also wants his tail to be cut off. The merman is Chang Yi who stubbornly refuses to cooperate.

In order to tame Chang Yi, Yun He pretends to be nice to him to gain his trust. She gets close to him with an ulterior motive at the start but ends up developing feelings for him. Chang Yi too falls deeply in love with Yun He. As their relationship is a forbidden one and Chang Yi will be harmed eventually, Yun He plans for their escape from Flower Valley. At a critical stage, Yun He secretly sacrifices herself to set Chang Yi free. But Chang Yi thought she has betrayed him and ends up hating her.

The Blue Whisper Part 1 Ending (Spoilers Alert!)

The Blue Whisper Part 1 ends with Chang Yi freeing Yun He from the Immortal Master’s prison. He brings her back to the Northern Abyss to make her pay for her supposed lies and betrayal. He keeps her alive as he wants her life to belong to him as revenge. Due to Lin Cang Lan’s experiments on her that sees a power that is against the order of nature being injected into her, Yun He is also turning into a monster with little time left to live. The torture that she suffered at the hands of Shunde Fairy while in prison also made her weak.

When Did The Leads Get Together?

Yun He tells Chang Yi that she likes him in Episode 4. She does so to exploit his feelings towards her so that she can convince Xue San Yue to cooperate with her to get out of Flower Valley. But her heart gradually softens for him. They promise to be together no matter what happens in Episode 8 when they got trapped in a formation and face a risk of separation once they get out. Chang Yi kisses Yun He and gives her his pearl then.

Is There A Breakup?

Yun He lies to Chang Yi that she is only pretending to love him in order to tame him as instructed in Episode 14. This is because Chang Yi is to be sent to the Immortal Master’s Mansion due to Fairy Shunde’s orders. However, Chang Yi refuses to listen to Yun He to escape. He knows that if he does so, Yun He would be punished. Hence, Yun He has not choice but to lie to Chang Yi that her affections for him is fake. She even stabs him to prove her point and then pushes him off the cliff as they are being pursued. As a result, Chang Yi starts to hate Yun He in Episode 15.

Is There A Love Triangle?

Qing Yao has feelings for Chang Yi. She even expends much of her spiritual powers to repair Chang Yi’s broken spirit core to save him in Episode 19. However, she keeps her effort a secret from him to prevent him from feeling that he owes her. After all, he has not shown any interest in her.

Does Hao Qing Like Yun He?

Hao Qing seems to have a bitter rivalry with Yun He ever since she pushed him into a snake pit when they were young. In Episode 9, it is revealed that Hao Qing actually knew that his father forced Yun He to do so. He also saw that his father has casted the Frost Mark seal on her to make her do his bidding. Hence, he purposely pretend to become ruthless. He wants to gain power because that is the only way he can protect Yun He.

In Episode 10, he tells Yun He that he knows what his father has done to her. He wants them to cooperate to take down his father and free Flower Valley from the latter’s control. He also keeps trying to save Yun He’s life as he has feelings for her. Hence, Hao Qing sacrifices Chang Yi’s freedom in order to protect Yun He in Episode 14 against her wishes. On the other hand, Yun He refuses to leave with him when he comes to free her from the Immortal Master’s prison in Episode 15.

What Is The Frost Mark Seal?

Those who have been infused with the Frost Mark Seal will suffer from frost without regular consumption of an antidote. It originated from Flower Valley but its history is unknown and there is someone powerful behind it. Yun He is the key to discover its secret and rebuild the Lin family. Lin Cang Lan left a letter about the seal to Hao Qing in Episode 11 before he died.

In Episode 12, Hao Qing informs Yun He about the seal when she insists on getting the antidote and leaving Flower Valley with Chang Yi. His father was also a victim and the seal is cast by the Immortal Master who seems to have an old grudge with Flower Valley. None of the Lin family members have a long life as they are under the control of the Immortal Master.

Lin Cang Lan wanted to break free from the spell and discovered that by fusing the powers of a Heavenly and an Earthly immortal, the frost can be suppressed. Together with Qing Shu, they have done many trials. Hence, many innocent demon masters were sacrificed. But Yun He seemed to be able to withstand the power fusion better than the rest and she unknowingly became a tool for Lin Cang Lan’s trials.

Eventually, Yun He could overcome the frost as Lin Cang Lan’s and Qing Shu’s combined powers have opened up a second vein in her. When she is attacked by the frost, she will then turn into a fox spirit which originates from Qing Shu. This is explained by the Immortal Master to Yun He in Episode 16.

The Blue Whisper Part 2 Ending (Spoilers Alert!)

The Blue Whisper Part 2 has a happy ending. In the final battle with Shunde Fairy in Episode 20, Yun He seals up the fairy’s spirit in her body to prevent her from escaping from an ancient lamp formation. Yun He plans to drop herself into the lava pit to completely destroy Shunde Fairy’s spirit. She asks Chang Yi to seal up the pit with his powers so that Shunde Fairy has no chance to escape. But in the process, she herself would be imprisoned and might die.

Chang Yi gives Yun He his pearl to protect her life. Yun He promises Chang Yi that she will find her way out of the pit once Shunde Fairy completely perishes which might take hundreds or even thousands of years. With that promise, Yun He drops herself into the pit which Chang Yi then seals up. He leaves Northern Abyss thereafter to wander the world.

Yun He and Chang Yi reunite 300 years later. They are seen sitting on a cliff by the ocean before jumping into it for a swim and transforming into merfolks. They are now happy and carefree.

Chang Yi And Yun He’s Relationship

Chang Yi imprisons Yun He in a house when he brings her back to Northern Abyss. She is depressed for losing her freedom again and tries to commit suicide in Episode 3 but unsuccessful. In Episode 6, Chang Yi transfers some of his spiritual powers to a weak Yun He through a kiss to keep her alive. He also refuses to hand her over to Hao Qing when the latter launches an attack on Northern Abyss on Shunde Fairy’s orders.

In Episode 8, Yun He makes a deal with Hao Qing to leave with him and surrender to Shunde Fairy during a tense situation between Flower Valley and Northern Abyss. Yun He wants to sacrifice herself to prevent more chaos and save Flower Valley since she is going to die anyway. But Chang Yi is disappointed that Yun He seems to be choosing Hao Qing over him and questions his own decision to lock her up as she has never been happy ever since.

Chang Yi decides to free Yun He but is too late when she sacrifices herself to stop the war between Flower Valley and Northern Abyss in Episode 9 through Kong Ming’s help. Yun He also thinks it is the only way she can return Chang Yi’s pearl to him so that he can regain his full spiritual powers. Chang Yi regrets being angry with Yun He and finally learns she has never betrayed him. He then seals up Yun He’s body before finally letting her go in Episode 10. As Yun He’s soul fades away, she is clutching Chang Yi’s tear which has dropped into her palm and turns into a red pearl.

Did Yun He Die?

No, Yun He did not die. Hao Qing knows all along through his research that Yun He will live. That is why he agreed to Shunde Fairy’s request to capture Yun He. This is because Yun He has two veins within her from Lin Cang Lan’s experiments. When one dies, the other will revive her. Now, Yun He’s fairy vein has died and she has become a complete fox spirit. Hao Qing quietly brings her back to Flower Valley and uses half of his spiritual powers to transform her back to human form in Episode 10.

However, Yun He is back being a young fairy with no memories of the past. She is clutching Chang Yi’s tear pearl with her as she awakens. Hao Qing introduces himself to her as her master. Yun He grows up very quickly and back to her previous appearance in Episode 11. Hao Qing asks her to leave Flower Valley and head south when his plan to create an antidote for the Frost Mark Seal has been discovered by Shunde Fairy. While traveling, Yun He is captured when helping out an innocent spiritual master from the Immortal Master’s Mansion and transported to Northern Abyss.

Reunion

While in Northern Abyss, Yun He meets Chang Yi again in Episode 13 but she cannot recall who he is except for some dream fragments. Neither can Chang Yi recognize her as she has used her illusion spell to appear as a young man. In Episode 14, her illusion spell is broken. Chang Yi learns she is Yun He but would rather not revive her memories as she is happy in her current state.

When Zhu Ling manipulated the lava to make it erupt to destroy Northern Abyss on Shunde Fairy’s orders, Yun He runs back to help Chang Yi to stop the catastrophe in Episode 15. During the life and death situation, she gets back her memories and regains her powers as the 9-tail fox. They successfully stop the eruption together and reconcile as a couple.

In Episode 17, Chang Yi risks his life to destroy Zhu Yan. It is a matter of time before he dies of frost as a result. Yun He asks Chang Yi to marry her before his life comes to an end. They consummated their relationship and got married in Episode 18. Chang Yi freezes up on their wedding night but the Heavenly King’s bodhi tree fruit helps to dissipate the frost in him. Chang Yi awakens just in time in Episode 19 to battle Shunde Fairy with Yun He.

Qing Yao’s Disappointment

Qing Yao is disappointed to learn that Chang Yi is deeply devoted to Yun He in Episode 6 when he transfers some of his spiritual powers to a sickly Yun He despite an impending attack by Flower Valley. In Episode 8, she and her father try to stop Yun He from leaving with Hao Qing. The Fox King tries to kill Yun He but her fox spirit instinctively repels the attack. Before he dies, he tells Chang Yi that Qing Yao gave him half of her spiritual powers earlier to repair his damaged spirit core. Hence, Chang Yi owes him to keep Qing Yao and Northern Abyss safe.

Qing Yao and the Fox Clan demand that Yun He be killed and to launch a war against Flower Valley to avenge the Fox King’s death. Chang Yi stops them and insists on protecting Yun He. He gives back half of his spiritual powers to Qing Yao to repay what he owes her and agrees to lead the attack against Flower Valley. Qing Yao regrets for pushing Chang Yi and is saddened that he doesn’t have any feelings for her. She also feels guilty after Yun He sacrificed herself to prevent a war between Flower Valley and Northern Abyss in Episode 9. She realizes she has misunderstood Yun He. By the time Yun He and Chang Yi get married in Episode 18, Qing Yao has decided to let bygones be bygones.

Ning Qing’s History

When Yun He is at her weakest, a lady will appear in her dream. Ning Qing has a portrait of her in his secret chamber. In Episode 6, the lady tells Yun He that it is Ning Qing who killed Ning Ruo Chu and created the formation to seal Qing Ji. She wants Yun He to inform Qing Ji about it so that the latter will rise up against Ning Qing. She is doing so for her own redemption.

However, Yun He is hesitant to tell Qing Ji about it as she doesn’t want her to revisit the past again. This is because Qing Ji has finally got over Ning Ruo Chu after much hardship as she thought he had betrayed her when they were lovers. Through Qing Ji, Yun He also learns that Ning Ruo Chu is Ning Qing’s senior disciple brother. The lady in her dream is Ning Xi Yu who was once the master of Flower Valley. Ning Qing and Ning Ruo Chu were her disciples.

In Episode 7, Ning Xi Yu appears in Yun He’s dream again. She relates to her that she took in an orphaned Ning Qing and raised him as her disciple together with Ning Ruo Chu. When Ning Ruo Chu who was having a forbidden love affair with Qing Ji, she protected him. Consequently, she was punished and expelled from Flower Valley as the Lin family was coveting her position.

Ning Qing left with her and they travelled together. When they were attacked by evil spirits, he sought help from Flower Valley who ignored his plea. Ning Xi Yu was killed and her death affected Ning Qing deeply. Ning Qing then sealed up Qing Ji and killed Ning Ruo Chu. He blamed them and Flower Valley for the death of his master.

Ning Qing’s Fate

Kong Ming informs Chang Yi and the Heavenly King about what Yun He had told him regarding Ning Qing’s background before she died. In Episode 10, they piece together clues to deduce that Ning Qing would have got help from a mysterious force in a nameless mountain. The Heavenly King and his 2 guardians together with Li Shu and Xue San Yue enter the mountain in Episode 14. The mountain is the site of a battle between the Heavenly King’s father and Zhu Yan in the past. Zhu Yan was defeated but his spirit lingered and made contact with Ning Qing when he passed through the place as a kid.

After Ning Xi Yu died, Ning Qing made a blood contract with Zhu Yan to revive his human form in exchange for cultivation knowledge. Zhu Yan needs to absorb the spirits of others in large quantities to be revived while Ning Qing wants the world to pay for his master’s death. Hence, they share the same goal to cause war and destruction. The Frost Mark Seal comes from Zhu Yan whose body is an eternal ice. Hence, Zhu Yan needs to die for the seal to be broken.

After Qing Ji damaged Zhu Yan’s spirit in Episode 16, he hides in Ning Qing’s ring to recover. In order to destroy Zhu Yan, Yun He brings Ning Qing into her dream to meet Ning Xi Yu in Episode 17. Ning Xi Yu talks him out of his plan of destruction and to repent. Ning Qing turns haggard as he has violated the blood contract with Zhu Yan with his repentance. He commits suicide after Shunde Fairy absorbed his remaining spiritual powers.

Shunde Fairy’s Fate

Shunde Fairy is deeply discontented that she has been treated as a stand-in by Ning Qing and grounded by her brother for being insolent. At the same time, the dark force is getting impatient with Ning Qing for failing to get the results he wanted. So, it chooses Shunde Fairy to be his new ally and gives her some dark powers in Episode 10.

In Episode 17, Shunde Fairy is angry to learn that Yun He is still alive. A repentant Ning Qing even shielded Yun He and Chang Yi from her attack which incensed her further. After Chang Yi destroyed Zhu Yan, Shunde Fairy absorbs Zhu Yan’s remaining powers. She also absorbs the powers of the injured Ning Qing who subsequently ended his own life. Shunde Fairy is dissatisfied that Ning Qing has never really cared for her but treated her as a stand-in for Ning Xi Yu. With her new found powers, she is determined to destroy the world.

Shunde Fairy controls the minds of Hao Qing and the soldiers to launch an attack on Northern Abyss in Episode 19. She battles Chang Yi and Yun He in Episode 20. They try to seal her up in an ancient lamp. Fearing that she would escape, Yun He seals her spirit within her body and drops herself into a lava pit. Shunde Fairy supposedly perished in the pit as Yun He reemerges 300 years later.

The Ending For Other Characters

300 years later, Kong Ming is now the Immortal Master. He has married Luo Luo who is pregnant. Li Shu who died to retrieve the sky fire in the quest to seal up Shunde Fairy with an ancient lamp is reincarnated as a mortal. He is picked by Hao Qing to serve as Xue San Yue’s assistant in Flower Valley. Xue San Yue is teary when she sees him although he has no memories of the past.

Hao Qing is crippled after the final battle. He dropped himself off a cliff during a fight with Yun He as he was being mind controlled by Shunde Fairy. Although wheelchair-bound now, Hao Qing feels contented that he is now free to be himself with Flower Valley being intact. Si Yu remains by his side. He loves Yun He but he also accepts that she is destined to be with Chang Yi as she still ended up in Northern Abyss when she had no recollection of the past earlier.

Qing Yao has no interest in getting married and channels all her time and energy into ruling Northern Abyss.

The Blue Whisper Review – Engaging!

The Blue Whisper is an engaging tale of a forbidden romance between a spiritual master and a merman. A forbidden love plot is really nothing new but what drives the drama is the other elements that have been weaved together to give us a detailed and intriguing story. Secrets, betrayal, misunderstanding, and revenge are some of the elements that will make you hooked to the drama. The story is easy to understand despite its xianxia genre and you will be eager to know what will happen next which signify a job well-done in terms of plot execution.

While the drama is broken up into 2 parts, there is a smooth flow to the story. It breaks at the right time as the main couple’s relationship enters a different phase. I find the pacing for Part 1 to be better because Part 2 starts off pretty slowly with a weakened female protagonist. This stretches for about 8 episodes which I think is too long as the point has been made to the viewers long before. In contrast, the ending seems to be a rush in that last few minutes. So, although the story is slowly built up to a climax in Part 2 with more secrets revealed, the first part is more evenly paced to me.

Lack Of Details For The Ending (Spoilers Alert!)

The last scene of the main couple’s reunion in Part 2 is short of explanation. It is not clearly spelled out what happened to Yun He after she was sealed up in the lava pit. You have to use your own imagination and deduction on what transpired rather than being spoon-fed about the details which similar to the ending in Love And Destiny. The good thing is it has a finality to it when it comes to the main couple unlike Novoland: Pearl Eclipse. It is just how they got there which requires you to connect the dots.

If you have paid attention and watched the whole drama from start to finish, it is not hard to guess why Yun He could survive the lava pit. Chang Yi’s pearl has a lot to do with it. But personally, I would have liked more details rather than less to spell it out clearly what happened at the bottom of the pit and the villain’s ending. It would have made the story more complete with proper closure.

Tolerance For Xianxia Fantasy

The xianxia genre with its immortals, beasts, spirits, and other beings may not be everyone’s cup of tea. If you find this kind of drama to be unrealistic, The Blue Whisper may not be able to change your mind either despite the presence of popular stars in its cast. Why do I say so? It is because you will see many characters sacrificing themselves in this drama for the greater good. While that may seem ordinary, some of these characters will end up coming back to life later on.

In other words, they “die” and then reawaken. Perhaps it is overdone in The Blue Whisper with the number of characters sacrificing their lives. So, if you have little tolerance for xianxia dramas, this wouldn’t be a particularly good one to binge on. It might just annoy you with the number of so called “deaths” and the simplistic way they are rejuvenated. This is vastly different from Ten Miles Of Peach Blossoms which is also a story of love and sacrifice but with much fewer deaths and more substance to the reawakening of the characters.

However, if the coming back to life thingy is not an issue with you, then the overall story is a cohesive one with gradual reveal of the past and the villain’s plan. This is partly what makes you hooked as you will be curious about certain things along the way.

Acting And Chemistry

I think the 2 leads need no introduction. Dilraba Dilmurat has played enough roles as a strong female character to be able to exhibit the intelligence and stoicism of Yun He in the drama. While I don’t think she exceeded expectations to take her acting up a notch, it is still a respectable performance from her. She can switch effortlessly from a strong and mature character to a sassy one and back.

Allen Ren also needed to portray a change of personality in the drama from a sincere merman to a hardhearted and cold one. He did well in the first part with his sweet facial expressions. The purity and naivete is convincing. However, his cold demeanor in the second part is a bit bland to me. Yes, he is supposed to wear an impassive face but the inner torment that the character is facing seems to be lacking in his portrayal.

As a couple, I can’t really say that the chemistry between Dilraba Dilmurat and Allen Ren is great in the drama. It is passable but the heat is certainly missing. It is not so much about the fish kisses that lack real passion but their interactions just don’t have enough sizzles for their love to be felt more deeply. The actress’ chemistry with Leo Wu in The Long Ballad is definitely more obvious compared to this one with Allen Ren.

In fact, some might even feel that Dilraba Dilmurat has better chemistry with the second male lead. This is not surprising as Xiao Shun Yao did well in his portrayal of a conflicted Hao Qing. The other notable character is played by Cristy Guo. She really brought out the essence of Shunde Fairy’s character in her portrayal. So, be forewarned that you will hate her as you watch!

The Blue Whisper is a big budget production and the quality in terms of CGI, costumes, and cinematography will not disappoint. The scenery set up is beautiful with the effects in both Part 1 and 2. Hence, when everything is put together, it is a highly watchable production. The romance is not a deeply heartfelt one as it doesn’t have a strong foundation to it unlike One And Only but the overall story is logical and flows well. Hence, the main couple’s romance should still resonate with viewers. Even if it doesn’t, there are 2 more couples in the story to gain your attention.

Moreover, there is more to the plot apart from romance. Revenge also takes up a significant portion of the drama and is naturally weaved into the story. Some of the characters have underlying motives to their actions and these are gradually teased out as the drama progresses. Thus, the story is an engaging one even if you can’t feel anything special about the leads’ romance.

For this The Blue Whisper review, I would give it a score of 8/10. It is not the best xianxia romance drama out there but it has enough factors to make it watchable. Some parts is a little slow-moving and the ending could be more detailed. But overall, it would not be a waste of time to watch this. Whether you would find this to be a perfect 10 lies mainly in how deeply the leads’ love for each other moves you as a viewer.

Personally, it is a beautiful love story that is well-executed but simply lacks more heartfelt scenes to make the romance more memorable when it is all over. That is also why the rewatch value is not high on my list with this one.
