Is Top Gun appropriate for a 10 year old?

Good movie but poor language

It is an interesting movie however the movie takes God's name in vain and has coarse language. My wife and I use TV guardian and filtered out the cuss words otherwise I would not have watched it. Also there is a sexual scene between 2 unmarried people. The movie itself was good however without the cuss word filter I would not have watched it.

Great Action Film

Great film, however, why must Hollywood always throw in a sex scene? It was totally unnecessary. The plane footage made you want to go outside and be a fighter pilot. Overall the acting was good. The choice of music was great too. I can’t wait for the sequel...

Lots of aircraft, a beach volleyball scene and intimate sex, showing too much. I watched it with my daughter and we just wanted to skip forward.

Keeps Little Kid Interest

Yes, there is a lot of swearing. A main character dies. A fairly benign love scene. And the characters behave rudely towards each other for a majority of the movie. But it kept the interest of my 4 year old and showed him some things about what it is like to be a grown up. Gives you a chance to explain things like "driving a motorcycle like that is not safe," "saying those potty words was not very nice," "yeah you have to try to make sure to stay out of the jet wash" and "just because some guy sings to you doesn't mean you have to make him your boyfriend".

a top movie

After making a few mistakes, Maverick and the others are forced to "perfect" their flights, thereby showing viewers the importance of attention to detail and getting things right, and the consequences when those are not heeded. Competition and the desire to win are shown, but so is teamwork. A healthy balance is found. When Maverick meets Charlie he changes for the better, reinforcing the idea that meeting someone special sometimes makes us want to change our behavior. While you could argue that there should've been a couple women pilots, Charlie, a civilian working with the military, is strong, which more than makes up for that. As for the smoking, it wasn't frowned upon in 1986 to the degree that it is today, especially in the military. While parts of this movie will go over viewers' heads unless either they're in or have been in the military, everyone can benefit from this movie.

I still question 13+

It's more appropriate for 14+. It has a lot of intense war violence and has a very sensual scene. Definitely PG-13 to todays standards.

That's a Maybe, Ghostrider

I do remember this movie from my youth and was in elementary school. I loved the film because of the airplanes and cockpit talk. I had no interest in Kelly McGillis or knew who Tom Cruise was. I guess what struck me was how much cussing there was when watching it with my oldest. I have a 4 cussword rule right now with her. It may be less or more, however, this movie was on for 15 min and already violated that, so I turned it off. Now, most of it is everyday talk for some. However, I just didn't remember them saying so many and especially in anger. Granted when I saw this I also was watching HBO and Predator combined with how my parents talked. I think that is what determines whether or not you should let your kid see this. What are they used to already? If they are not used to cussing in anyway or once or twice a movie, this will stick out, so someone about to be in 5th grade can not have that stick out so much. If they are used to it, then it should be acceptable for someone about to be in 3rd grade. I put this movie has smoking, but its not a youth and not a pilot but possibly a stereotype of high ranking people in the military. I explained to my kids that they may not smoke in real life, but for this role in the movie.

Jingoistic and plotless, but the homoeroticism is fun

The swearing and sensuality are about what you’d expect from the eighties, as is the constant misogynistic undertone. The dialogue itself is poor—a certain romance confession in particular seems more like a vivid jerk-off fantasy of the main character during the entirety of the love interest’s speech, until the point where a good three minutes of it have passed and you realize this is the writer’s idea of a good romance. Overall, a mature teen can probably handle it fine, just be prepared for disappointment on their part when they realize this much-vaunted film is plotless airplane pornography with repetitive music (seriously, the score sounds like a Wii sports lobby theme on repeat, if the wii sports lobby theme had an electric guitar; at one point during the blossoming romance the chorus of the pop song in the background repeats the same six chords for at least five minutes) added for spice. And maybe have a talk with them about military propaganda. (Don’t believe me? Look it up—Navy would set up recruitment booths outside of theaters while this was showing, and there was an overall bump of 500% in the year after its release.)
