Jonathan Thomas Child of Rage today

Beth Thomas' life story is extraordinary. While young children are seen as angels who cannot harm even a fly, she shocked the world as a child of rage who did not have a conscience. No one could imagine the term psychopath was being used to describe a six-year-old, but that is precisely what she was. As a result, many thought that her future was doomed and she wouldn't grow to be an average adult having made global headlines.

Beth Thomas' story is truly inspirational and gives professionals a sense of hope as they continue to engage in old and new therapies with other struggling children. The "psychopath little girl" was a severe case to the point where her adoptive parents would lock her in her room at night because they feared she might kill them in their dreams.

That is not the beginning of her story, as it appeared that fate had spelt a dark life for her from the start. Her mother died when she was only one year old, and she and her brother had to be taken away from their father because he sexually abused them.

Who is Beth Thomas?

Beth is a survivor of reactive attachment disorder (RAD), currently working as a nurse. The people who know her story are mostly those who lived through the '80s when she made global headlines as a young girl who had terrorized her family. A film, Child of Rage, was created to illustrate her life.

Is Child of Rage a true story? Yes, it is a story of Beth, who suffered from severe behavioural problems because she was deprived of attachment to her mother and abused by her father. She was aged six when she admitted on tape to a clinical psychologist that she intended to hurt not only the parents who had adopted her but also her younger brother.

The videos recorded during the therapy sessions with Thomas and her psychologist, Dr Ken Magid, would later be compiled to become a documentary demonstrating the dire consequences of severe neglect and sexual abuse on children.

A harrowing experience in the hands of her father

When Thomas' mother died, she was one year old; hence she and her brother were left under the care of their father. What did Beth Thomas dad do to her? He physically, verbally, and sexually abused Beth repeatedly. The experiences made her have recurring nightmares and troubled childhood.

In the nightmare, a man would go upstairs to her room and hurt her. That man was her father. Despite her young age, Thomas gave graphic descriptions of the abuse she had suffered. She said,

He touched my vagina until it bled. It hurt a lot. And he wouldn't feed me a lot. He would hit me. It wouldn't be very nice to me.

Her brother was also not spared from the inappropriate behaviour of her father.

Rescue at last

When their father neglected them, Beth and her brother were adopted by a pastor and his wife, who had not been lucky to have their children. Unfortunately, the couple were not privy to the extent of the abuse they had undergone; hence the next few months were quite the nightmare to them as well as Thomas started displaying psychopathic symptoms.

Tim and Julie, the adoptive parents, noticed that something was not right with Thomas when she tried to kill her brother several times. What happened to Beth Thomas' brother? Jonathan suffered when Beth would stick pins into him, push him down the stairs, and smash his head on the floor. She also molested him by pinching and squeezing his private parts.

As if that was not enough for a child her age, Thomas developed a habit of masturbating daily. It was so bad that she would do it even in public places like a hospital parking lot. Once, she stole knives and only confessed a few weeks later that she was the one who took them. Frightened by her behaviour, her parents would lock her room at night in fear of being harmed by her.

They sought help and took her to a clinical psychologist named Dr Magid. After several sessions with her, he made it clear that she had to be temporarily separated from her adoptive family and be placed in the care of an expert in raising children with reactive attachment disorder (RAD) like her. It is a rare condition that affects young children who fail to make healthy connections with primary caregivers.

Common symptoms of RAD include destructive behaviour, self-harm, and difficulty getting along with other people. Thomas was placed under Connell Watkins care as she embarked on reversing her client’s condition. She was placed in a controlled environment with severe restrictions such that she had to get permission before doing anything.

With time, she was able to develop empathy and compassion. She attended public school and was active in the church. After just one year, she had stopped harming herself, and she could show remorse at how she had treated her brother.

Where is she now?

There were huge sacrifices involved to make Beth live like a normal kid again. First, she was deprived of a family when she was separated from her brother and adoptive parents. All these paid when the RAD she had been diagnosed with was reversed, but then she had to be monitored throughout her life to make sure she did not relapse.

She managed to lead an everyday life as she went to school and graduated from the University of Colorado with a Degree in Nursing. She has also co-authored a book with her adoptive mother titled More Than a Thread of Hope. In addition, Thomas was awarded a Modern-Day Florence Nightingale Nursing Excellence Award to recognize her efforts as a nurse at a Flagstaff Medical Center.

As a nurse, her roles are to be a mentor by focusing on and adding to the existing strengths of those undergoing the same experiences she did as a child. She handles confrontation, correction, and errors with a positive approach. She loves her job as a nurse in a neonatal ICU, and in addition to that, she runs a company called Families By Design. The company helps families whose children have been diagnosed with RAD.

How is Beth Thomas today? She grew into a beautiful lady and is happily married now. She stays with her husband in Flagstaff, Arizona, having exchanged vows on 18th November 2016. Who is Beth Thomas’ husband? Not much is known about her spouse.

The story of Beth reveals that life is a summation of experiences. She went through an ordeal no one would wish on a child, and this made her psychopathic. The silver lining is that a good family took her in, and thus, her life turned around, giving her a second chance. Unfortunately, there is no information on what happened to Beth Thomas' biological father, but the good thing is that she made peace with herself.
