Kitchenaid refrigerator not making ice but water works

My KitchenAid French Door style refrigerator (KRFF507EBL01) abruptly stopped making ice. I have a few things that are confusing me. (I'm giving lots of details for the sake of others with similar situations.)

This model has a water dispenser and an ice dispenser on the left door. The water dispenser works just fine with lots of pressure.

Eventually, I realized the ice maker was not getting any water. I could hear the ice harvest cycle running periodically (without harvesting any ice) which should be followed by the sound of water filling the ice maker's reservoir for a few seconds. But all I heard was the sound of a hum for a few seconds - as if the solenoid was turning on, then off, to start and stop the water flow - but no water actually flowed.

So, I got out the giant page of the refrigerator's tech specs from inside the top right hinge cap and ran the "Service Tests" related to the ice maker.

Service Test 56: Ice Maker Error Codes: (No errors)
ST 57: Ice Maker Harvest: (Completed each step without a problem)
ST 58: Ice Maker Heater Activation and Thermistor: (Turned heater on; Temp was below harvest temp for about a minute. Then it read above harvest temp.)
ST 59: Ice Maker Motor: (Motor ran rotations in both directions and successfully completed both.)

OK, so that makes it look like the ice maker may be fine (...to my untrained eyes). Since the actual problem is the ice maker is not getting water, I ran the next logical tests...

ST 19: Ice Maker Fill Tube and Facia Heater Status: (It says the heater is on.)
ST 45: Ice Maker Water Fill Test: (As I toggled through the steps (Off, On, Paused) I could hear the faint click of the solenoid opening the valve, humming while holding it open for a few seconds, then clicking it closed. But no water was flowing into the ice maker.)

So I decided maybe that secondary solenoid switch that supplies water to the ice maker is bad. I assumed the ice maker side of the dual water supply switches might be the problem. Remember, the water flow to the water dispenser is just fine - with lots of pressure. So, the solenoid for the water dispenser appears to be healthy.

I removed the ice maker water line from that secondary solenoid. The line seemed dry - perhaps normal after a few days of no ice making.

I thought I would run Service Test 45 again (Ice Maker Water Fill).

After I dried off my face and the inside of the fridge, I concluded that the switch must be fine because LOTS of water came out with considerable pressure behind it. This is confusing...

Maybe the water line is blocked? (But it was dry...)

I reconnected the water line and ran another Water Fill Service Test. It filled the ice maker this time.

So, it appears the water line is NOT blocked. It eventually froze those cubes and dropped them into the bucket.

OK... Have I fixed it? Not so fast... It was just toying with me...

That was the last time I've had water run into the ice maker.

I have poked and prodded more things. I have removed the ice maker water line on and off from that solenoid valve a few times since then. ...No joy.

I get water from the valve when I do the fill test with the water line disconnected. I get no water flow when the line is connected. Consistently now.

Is it any wonder I am confused??? The ice maker happily makes ice when it gets water. The solenoid switch is happy to supply water on demand - until the whole system is fully assembled. Then, no one is happy.

I even tried blowing through the tube while it was disconnected from the solenoid (Hey, I'm desperate here!), but that didn't work. (Is there another closed valve on the ice maker end of that water line?)

I have now reached the limits of my wisdom.

I don't want to replace something that is actually working fine, but I don't know enough to make that determination.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

It can be frustrating when your refrigerator is dispensing water and ice one day, and the next day it leaves you high and dry. So why is your KitchenAid refrigerator not dispensing water or ice all of a sudden? Here are the most common reasons why your KitchenAid refrigerator won’t dispense as it should.

Causes of a KitchenAid Refrigerator Not Dispensing Water or Ice

Is your KitchenAid refrigerator not dispensing water or ice? An easy DIY solution may fix the problem, so don’t call for professional repair service yet! If your KitchenAid refrigerator won’t dispense water or ice, use our troubleshooting guide to figure out what’s wrong and how to repair it.

Control Lock Is On

The first place to start is checking to see if your KitchenAid water dispenser switch is in the locked position. If somehow your Kitchenaid water dispenser locked, you can turn it back on easily. To do this, you just need to press and hold TO LOCK for 3 seconds.

If you can’t find the TO LOCK button you should refer to your owner’s manual. If you didn’t keep a paper copy of your owner’s manual and you find your Kitchenaid refrigerator water and ice dispenser not working you can usually get an electronic copy on Kitchenaid’s website.

Need to Replace Water Filter

If your KitchenAid refrigerator water dispenser works intermittently, the problem may be due to a clogged or defective water filter. An early sign of a filter that needs replacing is when your water and ice taste bad. Once the filter stops working altogether though, water will no longer be dispensed, and your ice maker can’t make ice.

To avoid this problem, we recommend that you replace your KitchenAid refrigerator water filter every six months. We also suggest that you avoid generic water filters as these can cause even bigger problems. This will ensure that your refrigerator gets fresh, clean water while preventing problems like a broken ice maker.

Water Inlet Malfunction

If the filter is fine, you should check to see if the water pressure has changed. Low water pressure can be the cause if you notice that your Kitchenaid Refrigerator water dispenser works intermittently.

Check the condition of the line; if you see a kinked or frozen water line, take note. You may be able to straighten out a kinked line, but you might need to make adjustments to your freezer settings if the water line is frozen. If the problem has already caused some damage, you may have a defective water inlet valve. If so, we recommend that you contact a qualified service technician to take care of this.

Defective Door Switch

Sometimes the reason a Kitchenaid refrigerator won’t dispense is because of a bad door switch. When the door is closed, this switch allows you to use the ice maker and water dispenser. If you find your KitchenAid refrigerator water and ice dispenser not working at all, check for a faulty door switch.

You can test the door switch for continuity using a multimeter. If the switch does not show continuity when tested, it most likely needs to be replaced.

Dispenser Switch Failure

The dispenser switch activates the physical dispenser itself. If this switch doesn’t work, your Kitchenaid refrigerator won’t dispense water or ice. To find out if the dispenser issue is caused by dispenser switch failure, you’ll need to test the switch with a multimeter. Just like with the door switch, if there is no continuity, you’ll need to replace the dispenser switch.

Why is my refrigerator dispensing water but not making ice?

If the water inlet valve is defective, or if it has insufficient pressure, it won't allow water to flow through. As a result, the ice maker won't make ice. The valve requires at least 20 psi to function properly. Make sure that the water pressure to the valve is at least 20 psi.

Why did my KitchenAid refrigerator stopped making ice?

A common cause for when a KitchenAid ice maker won't make ice is that the freezer temperature is too high. When the temperature is too high, ice cube production is deficient. Clean the condenser coils and check to ensure the condenser fan is working properly.

How do I reset my KitchenAid ice maker?

Ice Maker Reset Press the plastic tab on the door jamb. This signals the light to switch off. Close the freezer door and let it reset for 10 seconds prior to opening the door. Tap the door's switch at least three times and close the door.

Why would my ice maker suddenly stopped making ice?

What causes an ice maker to stop working? There are several reasons you may find your ice maker not working all of a sudden, including a blocked water dispenser, issues with your water supply line, or a clogged water filter.
