Lied about employment history background check Reddit

Let me begin by saying that I know what most of you are going to say and will judge and just tell me to save myself any embarrassment. Please don’t try to change my mind, I already fucked up. Btw, this is a new account because my actual one has a pretty obvious name.

I’ve been looking for job for some time because I can barely make a living. I have like $200 dollars to spare after all my actual expenses and it feels bad. I spoke to my boss and asked for a raise and he said pretty much no. So while looking for options I just extended my resume on some dates, but my frustration made me very exaggerated. I worked for a big bank a few years ago and left after only 6 months, but I said I was there for 2 years. I know, I know. I actually ended up fixing my resume, but the thing is this was one of my first interviews and I ended up getting the offer when I was no longer expecting one. The rest of my resume, which is my most recent experience is real and is really good, but I didn’t want to be offered some Entry Level job because of the experience I already have. This is a huge investment company and they are going to do a background check with a third party. My question is, should I lie on the background check and hope they don’t find out or just be honest and hope they don’t match them?

I know this will have split opinions, but I really want to hear you guys out. Please try to help me and not criticize me.

Thank you, Reddit.

Edit: Hello, guys! I just wanted to reach out to you and let you know that I decided to leave the background check with the prefilled dates they had already established. They did ask me why the other employer had different dates and just explained it was a mistake on my resume that I only noticed until after a friend revised my resume. I believe it was irrelevant because it was not my most recent experience or something that was important for this position, who knows. I have the job and appreciate the ones who supported and cheered me and the ones who didn’t I still wish you the best. I feel blessed, I feel happy and am excited to start earning a little more money to keep supporting me and my family. (It’s only around 60k, but enough for me)

Thank you all!

Edit 2: Sorry for bombarding you with the replies, I just wanted to let everyone know since I had promised and don’t know if y’all get a notification when I edit.

Not me but a previous coworker did. She had a stellar resume and we were both contractors at the time. I started a couple weeks later and was intimidated by her list of accomplishments. However, I saw her perform work and quickly realized that there's a gap in skills. This was also realized by several coworkers and our boss when they asked for her help in using a software she said she was good at. She was not.

She did NOT get a contract extension and was pretty much distanced from the team till her time was over.

I've never lied on a resume but I have stretched the truth to fit some roles I was interested in. I've adjusted a job title to be in line with more of the work I've done.

Ultimately, lots of resumes stretch some form of truth. I think it depends on how well you learn to cover ur initial shortcomings.

Lied on my resume about finishing my degree and the major. So I just got an offer at this medical device company to work as a entry level marketing associate. Talked to the director of marketing this morning and he told me hr will be reaching out for a background check and drug test check. This medical device company is a startup and they have around 100 employees. Should I be worried about this bg check? I am not worried about the drug test as I do not do drugs but I really want this job.

I got offered a job as an analyst and everything I said during the interview and everything I listed on my resume (degree, jobs, gpa) was the truth besides my employment history. My last job was working for this mortgage company for 4 months but I said I worked for 6 months. Imma fresh college grad and I thought adding two months wouldn't really hurt me. The person in charge of background checks contacted me and asked if I was initially employed through a staffing agency in those two months. Idk what to say. Does this mean I no longer have a job I was supposed to start on July 6th?

I would just put legitimate dates on the background check and if they ask you about it being different from your CV, tell them the truth. Usually companies will disclose with you if date accuracy is imperative to passing your background check and that’s typically for federal and security background checks

level 1

Who cares. Give the correct info. If they ask, say you accidentally put 18 months

level 1

Would anyone really care??

(I ask this genuinely)

I can’t think of a way out of this other than claiming it’s a typo. This is why you shouldn’t lie on your resume in case of stuff like this.

Sorry this happened!

level 2

You say “sorry this happened” as if OP didn’t do this on purpose.

The takeaway is don’t lie* on your résumé, and don’t try to compound lie by having people lie for you. Put the correct dates on the background forms.

This is a huge no no because that's one of the first things job verify. I really don't know what to say to get you out of this

Ok you did a year & added 6 months? Not such a big deal. Just explain you mixed up dates if asked

Back ground check is basic protocol for accepting job offer. Nothing unusual, unless they asked you about the time don’t worry.

Did u get the job at the end?

Can you lie on your resume about work history Reddit?

By lying, you can have as much experience as you want. The only limit to your skill is that your backstory is consistent, believable and not too absurd. It also helps you get around job gaps.

Can jobs tell if you lied on your resume?

If you lie on a resume or application, there are so many easy ways that the employer can find out if the applicant is lying, especially through references and formal background checks.

Can I lie about my job title?

Let's be clear on one thing: Don't lie about your title on your application. Be honest. You can offer clarification on your resume, which should aim to emphasize your skills more than anything else.

Can you lie to get a job?

Giving in to the temptation to lie when applying for a job is risky though. You could miss out on a job offer, damage your reputation, or even get fired once your fibs are revealed. Plus, it's easier than ever for a hiring manager to discover you're not telling the truth about your past.
