It's fun to watch bumblebees' shoulder open the spring-jawed flowers of this snap to raid the nectar and pollen within. Berry stained white florets crowd the tall spires that add punctuation to summer gardens filled lilies and Phlox. They relish the cooler seasons of early summer and fall, so if blooms flag in high heat, shear back to 6" and add a healthy top-dressing of compost and they will rebloom in fall, shrugging off frost to be one of the last flowers of the season.

HOW TO GROW Antirrhinum majus

Sowing Instructions:Depth: Chill seed 2 days in refrigerator before sowing. Sow thinly on surface and lightly press in, as they require light to germinate.
Sprout Time: 5-14 days
Starting Indoors: Recommended. Start in containers 8-10 weeks before last spring frost. Keep at about 60-70°F. A mix specifically for seed germination with added vermiculite is the preferred growing medium to prevent fungal problems. Water only from below by setting containers in a tray.
Starting Outdoors: Direct sow in spring, 1-2 weeks before last frost for flowers late summer. Mix seeds with fine sand and sow thinly into prepared and raked bed and firm lightly.

Placement & CultivationSnapdragon Lucky Lips' blooms tower over its glossy dark green foliage and add a handsome vertical statement to summer gardens. It is a favorite cut flower that blooms all summer where nights cool down, late spring and fall in hotter areas. Pinch when setting out to promote bushy growth and stake early with twiggy brush or crossed bamboo stakes in windy gardens to support the tall flower-filled stems. Native bumblebees heavy enough to shoulder open the hinged flower emerge rich in nectar and covered with pollen, carrying the gold dusting to the next blossom. Shear to 6" after the first flush of bloom and fertilize for renewed flowering.
