A very nice day for a visit. The driving tour is great, but it is walkable and great for bicycles. Something for everyone of all ages. Sites are well marked and easy to find. There is a self guided audio tour which is very helpful. Also very sobering to think of the number of casualties. You can spend as little or as long as you like exploring the park. Download the National Park Service app before you go.

Well designed visitor center that allows you to learn about the site and battle while also remaining respectful to the fallen soldiers and remaining apolitical. The NPS did a nice job of presenting this without a prejudice for one side being better or worse--specifically I didn't recall seeing any information on which side won the battle. It's about 8 minutes from the interstate and you can enjoy the full visitor center experience in as little as 30 minutes.

This is a battle field during the Civil War. This park you can drive to locations within the park to see certain important locations. You have an option to hear free audio (off your phone from a number you call) of the area you are in. If you enjoy history this can be a nice place to visit.

What a cool place to spend the afternoon! We loved strolling through the grounds at our own pace to explore the history of our town. So unique and educational!

What a fun, and free, stop! World's (new) Largest Cedar Bucket, really neat old buildings and history. The QR codes on the buildings are a great touch so you can see the interiors even when they are closed! Be sure to stop by the cute little gift shop for some yummy ice cream, neat trinkets, a site brochure, clean bathrooms, and an informative talk by the employees who work there!

Really enjoyed the historical impact we experienced while visiting this place. Recommend visiting, you'll be grateful you did.

German immigrants Albert and Margaretha Lotz moved to Franklin in 1856 and two years later built Lotz House, a product of Albert’s master carpentry and woodcarving skills. The house found itself at the epicenter of the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864. A step inside the Lotz House reveals the true master woodworker Albert Lotz was as he used his personal home as a “showroom” of his works.

Here are some ideas for day two: relax in the rural setting at Sam Davis Home, then steep yourself in history at Rippavilla Plantation, then contemplate the long history of Lotz House Museum, and finally steep yourself in history at Winstead Hill Park. To find traveler tips, ratings, other places to visit, and more tourist information, read our Franklin online road trip planner .

The Battle of Franklin was a pivotal battle in the Civil War and the Lotz House was in the center of all the chaos. It’s still standing today and allows visitors to tour the inside and see the damage caused by cannonballs and the bloodstains still on the floor. While touring, you’ll learn about the family who built the home and how the battle affected their lives.

On November 29, 1864, the Civil War rocked the picturesque streets of Franklin. Twenty-five thousand Union soldiers fled to the city from Spring Hill, and used the land around the Lotz House to defend their company. Throughout the battle, the Lotz House became the heart of the battleground, facing some of the most extreme hand-to-hand combat of the Civil War.

Do you care to learn about the people that were part of history?. Lotz House which is literally sitting in the middle of the Civil War battlefield of Franklin is a gem for anyone interested in history and archeology. This home is beautiful, very attractive, and well decorated with lots of archeological excavations that are dated back centuries.

As a Southern state, Tennessee was hugely impacted by the Civil War. You can learn more about the state's role in this nation-defining conflict at the Lotz House Civil War museum. The house dates back to 1858, and was the center of the Battle of Franklin in 1864, which was one of the bloodiest battles of the whole conflict.

The Lotz House, built in the middle of the 19th century, is where the Battle of Franklin took place. More than a collection of beautiful furniture created by German woodworker and piano maker Johann Lotz, it's a Civil War museum. Tour the home to learn about the Lotz family who resided here.

If you are interested in American history you will enjoy touring his house. The man who built it was a wood worker and he used this house to showcase his talent. The staircase is beautifully made as well as many other details in the home. The house was located in the middle of the historic Battle of Franklin. There are still bullet holes in the house. They don’t allow photos to be taken inside. They have a gift shop if you would like to purchase a souvenir.

Definitely different than any other guided tour we've taken. Chuck was great, he made it fun for everyone. He was engaged with his audience and made it personable for all, we were in a larger crowd too-5 or 6 different parties, around 12 to 15 people total. Very impressed.

Passionate tour guide (Kelly 🙌) was very knowledgeable, and unlike many other historic home tours weaved the history of the area and Battle of Franklin into the tour! Would highly recommend if visiting Franklin. Date: 8 January 2022 Standard adult admission: $12 (discounts available)

Carter House

History museum

Sights & Landmarks

Guided tours of a restored 1830s home that was used as a Civil War command post.

Slide 1 of 8

At Carter House, about a mile from the Carnton mansion, a once-in-a-lifetime event unfolded on November 30, 1864. While bullets and cannonballs pummeled their home, the Carter family hid in the cellar waiting for the gunfire to stop. If it's hard to imagine what this was like for Fountain Branch Carter, the businessman who owned the home; his wife; and their 12 children, all is revealed during a tour of the Carter House State Historic Site.

You can hear lots of stories from the Battle of Franklin during a trip to Carter House. Carter House was built in 1830 by Fountain Branch Carter and was the command post for the Union Army during the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864. The Carter family (along with the Lotz family from across the street) sought refuge in the basement of this home during the battle.

Historic Homes1140 Columbia Ave, Franklin, TN 37065MoreLess Info. Franklin's Carter House is part of the Carnton Plantation complex, a series of buildings that played important roles in the Civil War. The Carter House was originally a private residence but it became an important part of the Union defenses during the five-hour Battle of Carter.

Across the street from the Lotz House Museum is the Carter House, where Franklin residents took shelter during the Battle of Franklin. The small brick house may look unassuming, but it saved two families from the fallout of the battle. Carter House now operates as a museum with several touring options for the public.

The Carter House was built around 1830 by fountain branch carter during the time of the Civil War. This historic house served as the headquarters for the United States Army during the battle. Besides, the house, outbuildings, and grounds are captivating with the battle damage still visible.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of The Carter House. Our guide was very knowledgeable and was quick to answer our many questions. She told us about the horrific battle that took place on the grounds of the property. She pointed out the bullet holes in the walls and furniture. I took photographs of the outside and of the grounds. They do not permit pictures to be taken inside of the big house. They do allow photos to be taken in the small house and log house. From the inside one of them, you can see the enormity of the bullets fired. If you are in the area, you won’t regret checking it out.

Mike did a great job on our tour and brought the Battle of Franklin to life for us!

We stopped in Franklin and saw the battle ground at Carter House, an amazing part of our American History. We stopped in town and look at some buildings too. So much to see and not enough time, be sure to visit St. Paul's in downtown.

Carnton

Cotton plantation that was a Civil War battle site in 1864, with tours of the house & grounds.

Slide 1 of 7

A visit to Carnton, one of Franklin’s most popular porches, is next on the list. This home gives visitors and locals alike the chance to learn about the area’s Civil War history. I chatted with Brad Kinnison, the production and design manager for The Battle of Franklin Trust (and my tour guide on a recent visit), to learn more about the home’s back porch—the first thing you see when you round the corner for your tour.

Built in 1826 by former Nashville mayor Randal McGavock, Carnton was frequently visited by those shaping Tennessee and American history, including President Andrew Jackson. During the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864, Carnton served as the largest field hospital in the area for hundreds of wounded and dying Confederate soldiers. Carnton is also home to the McGavock Confederate Cemetery.

Another wonderful place you can visit for fun and enjoyment in Franklin is Carnton. This amazing and beautiful house is in good condition with modern facilities. Besides, unlike most historical home tours where you can only peek into roped-off rooms, they take you right into all the rooms.

Of all the historic sites in Franklin, Carnton Plantation may be the most famous. The antebellum mansion rises near the grounds of the Battle of Franklin. Once, it was a grand home of Randal McGavock, former Nashville mayor and plantation owner.

Had such a great time on this tour of the Carnton Plantation. Our guide Carrie was extraordinary and did such a great job telling the story behind it all. Be sure to walk the grounds and visit the outbuildings and cemetery. A must see while in Franklin!

Very cool historical site. My parents and I went with my 11 month old twins for the basic tour. It was $18 a person. There were several other people there and I had to carry the babies because no strollers or anything are allowed in the house due to all the antique furniture and stuff in there. I only got to see two rooms before I had to leave and give the babies a snack. The rooms were beautiful and all period correct with actual belongings from the house loaned by family members. The tour guide was very informative, my parents said upstairs and downstairs was really neat. I missed most of the tour but one of the employees was really sweet and gave me a little booklet thing so I could read and look at pictures of what I missed. If you pay for the basic tour you can still walk the grounds to see the garden, slave house, smoke house, spring house etc by yourself. The ground was hilly and bumpy so I wouldn't recommend pushing a stroller on it. Everything is maintained well and there are several signs explaining what things are. Right next door is the Confederate and McGavock family cemetery (including some of the slaves). The cemetery has several signs with information about it. Pretty sad past but very interesting. There's also a gift shop there where you buy your tour ticket. I wouldn't suggest bringing any small children here because they will be bored and it will be a struggle keeping them from touching things. Anyone handicapped would have a hard time you with all the standing and steep stairs to go upstairs plus all the walking outside. They have bathrooms right by the gift shop that were mostly clean.

I cannot say enough good things about Hannah Jacobs and the girls at Carnton weddings and events. Phenomenal staff and planner. Hannah is accommodating, kind, gets the job done without asking anything (she just takes action and handles all situations and problems effortlessly taking stress off couples getting married.) One of the best experiences I have had at a venue while being the wedding photographer. I absolutely loved getting to photograph and be apart of the vendor team of Carnton for our couple's day. Such a fun group of people who are ready to make wedding day dreams come true. I would recommend not only Carnton but Hannah to ALL of my clients. She is a wonderful person and wedding planner and so organized.

Fun tour and tasting. Worth a trip! A few miles off I-24 between Nashville & Chattanooga near Tullhoma is Cascade Hollow Distilling. Staff was excellent- friendly, helpful, and engaging. Tour was informative. Whisky is remarkable and even better than I imagined. Bourbon is wildly popular these days. Generally TN Whisky gets less attention- which is surprising to me. Cascade Hollow Distilling is making fine (award-winning) whisky, most of it is bourbon. Standard tasting includes 4-whiskies, but I paid to upgrade to get the two extra tastes. Happy I did so! The 12-year old single barrel was simply sublime and worth every penny. Dickel No. 12 was my 2nd favorite- great sipping whisky. I enjoyed all the whiskies I tasted. I didn’t know much about Cascade Hollow or Dickel whisky before I visited; now I’m a fan. All in all a great visit!

Tour guide was awesome. However opted for the more expensive tasting ($40) of 6 and found that our glasses were not as full as the others doing only the 4 tastings ($15). This made me annoyed and truly brought the experience down for me. I would highly recommend NOT doing the more expensive tasting. Absolutely not worth the drop you get.

Great experience its worth your time to sign up for a tasting and hear the story and history of the distillary. Good wiskey too 🥃

This was very entertaining and informative visit. Our tour guide Brandy was awesome and funny. We did the Dry County tour with our seven family members. She made the whole story interesting so that you remain attentive all the time. The Visitor Center was welcoming and impressive and our anticipation of great tour started from there itself. This is not just an industry but an important piece of the history and heritage. This is very inspiring story of Jack and how he made the most popular whiskey in the world. I have visited this distillery many times in the past but I still enjoy it every time. We always bring our guests here to show them important places around here. Unfortunately, we couldn’t see the bottling department running or charcoal making process by burning the wood during any of our visits. Overall it was fun experience with some history and some whiskey making process. Must see this oldest distillery of United States.

Loved this tour. Price is great and worth the drive from Nashville. We aren’t drinkers but it was so neat to learn the history. Our tour guide was Sean D and he was great, funny, informational and full of interesting facts. Would definitely go again and ask for him. Thank you Sean D for making our time great!

Absolute worth every penny. The service was great. If you can buy your tour tickets online. I did see some people get tickets the day of. We did the dry county one but you can still buy a tasting ticket after for 15 bucks extra per person. Our tour guide Ms Kim was the best part of my whole trip! She was beyond amazing and sooo funny! The actual tour was superb! Can’t say enough great things! I walked out with many bottles that I bought after the tour!

Great stop while you are in town. Has a lot of Jack Daniels items to buy. Prices are as expected. If you do a tour come here after and get a free shot glass with a $10 purchase. One per person. If your a Jack Daniels fan you will find something to buy if your not then you won’t. Simple as that. They have a shop that makes “stuff” out of the barrels. That was worth coming by to check out as if you need something for your bar at home this is the place to get something.

Oh my gosh this place is awesome!!! We went on a dry distillery tour and it was so cool to hear about the history of it all. When it was all said and done we walked down and across the street back to the truck and asked the two guys guilding people to the shuttle and answering questions, and Barry told us to check out the Lynchburg Hardware & General Store cause that's the main Jack Daniel's store, so we did just that. There were two floors of products of every type like the golf section and the fire fighter area. There was so much merchandise it was just amazing. Everybody got their own shirt and all of them were something you could only get there. They were unique. We also got a military discount and shot glasses for every $10 bucks we spent. The store was clean and organized, the staff was knowledgeable and friendly and we all got everything we wanted.

This store has some of the nicest and friendliest staff of any store I’ve ever visited. 2 floors of nice Nash shirts, shot glasses, and other cool souvenirs.

One of best historical tours we have ever done, largely due to our tour guide, Phyllis! She was congenial and extremely knowledgeable! We started with a 10 minute video, then reviewed an adjacent room of several exhibits before the personal tour hosted by Phyllis throughout the home. Highly recommend this to anyone with a love of history. James & Sarah Polk deserve much more notoriety!

Nicely done museum house with a focus on President James K. Polk. The museum has a very good collection of artifacts. The guide was knowledgeable and engaging. It's worth noting that Polk only lived a portion of his life in this house - with the demolition of the Polk House in Nashville, this became the primary place to serve as a museum to Polk in the area.

Visited today with my son and we loved it! Very friendly staff, nice gift shop, and interesting things on exhibit. Benjamin served as a great guide and we will be back again bringing our other family members.

David Crockett State Park

State park

Nature & Parks

Nature & Wildlife Areas

Creekside park with walking trails, camping & cabins, plus boat rentals & a massive swimming pool.

Slide 1 of 3

What a lovely state park! We camped, did two hikes and one of the programs. The camping site was great, creekside, with a flat area for the tent, picnic table and fire pit. The Shoal Creek hike is wonderful and an easy out and back with just a short uphill portion. The turkey ridge trail is okay. The first portion you can hear/see the road. The middle is lovely and then the last half mile or so is along the road. My only complaint/suggestion would be to update the description of the space/planet viewing activity. It is a kid focused program on the distance between planets. We were not able to actually view any planets (though that may vary based on time of year)

You can easily see the park in half a day. There are quite a few hiking trails, all of different levels for different hiking abilities. There's paddle boats in the summer on the lake, or take your own kayaks. A beautiful waterfall close to the lake but to get to the bottom, ensure you can stretch a bit & still be steady. Park is free admission which is awesome! There are camp sites available if you want to camp. Restaurant on site as well. Great place to spend the day or half a day, depending on your preference.

This was a really nice state park I enjoyed the 2 days that I was here I made my reservation online and didn't have any issues finding the campsite. I chose a campsite that was located directly next to the showers and the bathrooms once I took my shower the shower was made very inconveniently for a short person and I myself in 5 2". The water was kind of warm but not as warm as I would like it and I took a shower very quickly because tbecause the angle of the shower could not be changed. The bathrooms are located on the other side of where the showers are. The nature at this park was really nice the campsites were built very well and the leveled also. The campsites for tent camping are mixed in along with the site for trailer are trailers and campers. The pool for this park is going to be closing because the usage was down but the grounds are very nice and beautiful the cabins at this park don't really don't resemble cabins at all they resemble small apartments but they are nice as well they are located around the lake. We did go fishing in the lake but didn't catch anything. We were here in March and search and I don't believe that the restaurant was open we didn't get out to see but there were no cars there. This park is located very close proximity to anything that you would need or that you have forgotten my phone also works here in the park which was a plus. Overall I will say that I do like this state park the only complaint that I had was the shower. PS There is an archery 🏹 range as well!

Opened in 1938, the park was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1996. Located on the awe inspiring slopes of Monte Sano Mountain, the park features 1930’s era rustic cottage and hiking trails with scenic overlooks and picnic areas. Modern campsites are also available and make for a great experience for any outdoor enthusiast.

One of my favorite state parks in Alabama is Monte Sano in Huntsville. The park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and features camping, a planetarium, and 22 miles of hiking and biking trails. One of those trails, the North Plateau Loop, holds a secret just off the trail: two waterfalls — Lodge and McKay Hollow Falls.

Sprawling over an area of 2,140 acres, Monte Sano State Park is located at the east side of Huntsville in Alabama. The park features the eastern slope of Monte Sano Mountain. The word Monte Sano means the mountain of health in Spanish and the Monte Sano Mountain is regarded as the curing place for the diseases like yellow fever and cholera.

One of our very own got engaged on this overlook so we can vouch for its powers of seduction!. Even if you’re not quite ready to walk the aisle or maybe you made that stroll 20 years ago, this is a great spot to take a special someone for some breathtaking views.

From out on a trail hike or at the Japanese Garden, the whole of Monte Sano State Park is a perfect selfie backdrop.

The campsites are spaced very nicely for privacy. The area we were in had full 50A hookups. There is a lovey pavilion in the middle for group gatherings, or as we were lucky enough to be there for, musical jams. Within walking distance of the campground is a Japanese Tea Garden, a playground, a picnic area, and an amphitheater. There are als multiple hiking trails. We will definitely be returning m

Beautiful nature! Not too crowded but enough people to not be nervous alone. Great for hiking or mountain biking; not the best for trail runs at least not the one I did. Lots of steep loose rock. It is amazing here though.

Another great state park in Alabama. We stayed in the campground in a 28 ft RV. There were larger 5th wheels and class A motor homes in the park also. There is plenty of room between sites. Good area for kids to ride bikes. We enjoyed a nice hike on a couple of the many trails available.

Beautiful and Peaceful. Although we went in November still we had a peaceful walk in the park. My son loved the big chairs and picnic bench. We also saw some 🐠 fish. The staff was great. They have a cute gift shop with Okra which was so tasty.😃 Also for families that can’t afford the full price you can get in for $3.00 a person under the museum for all. Make sure to check website for more details.

Living in a society that supports education, outdoor activities, and public spaces, it seems almost anachronistic to charge $17 admission and not hand out a paper map. This garden is densely planted, thoughtfully arranged, and offers educational relaxation in the presence of amazing native and imported plants. You see young families swinging with a baby in a hammock, middle aged visitors with huge cameras, children groups, and the odd old couple that stops and stares, always leaving you to wonder if they catch their breaths or ogle at their favorite plant. I have to deduct a star since I came to cross check Trillium species with published descriptions and found the trillium collection not quite living up to its reputation. when I left, I became a member anyways. A place worth my support.

Nice place - very similar to Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL. Exceptional visitor center, walkways through the gardens and lush trees. They have weddings there too in beautiful settings. Flowers in spring are spectacular!

This museum is a hands on science museum for kids, my oldest is a science lover and was totally in heaven. Almost all of the exhibits allowed the kiddos to do the experiment on their own. There was a giant operation game (like the board game) that my kids spent a good amount of time playing.

I went yesterday April 3rd. It was awesome beautiful weather. There were a lot of people but you couldn't really tell it except from the parking lot. There is so much space and places to visit that it was extremely enjoyable. If history is your cup of tea, I highly recommend a visit to this place. It is great for all ages. I even noticed they had motorized scooters you rent if you couldn't walk long distances which I thought was thoughtful. Everyplace seems wheelchair accessible. So do go and enjoy yourself.

The people who work here take great pride in their history. It was great to see all the authentic pieces. We enjoyed the ability to climb into some of them and feel what it was like to be an astronaut. We also liked walking through the replica of the international space station. They have many experiences that are not included in the admission price. So go check then out first before you decide which ones to choose. The place is showing its age.

Awesome experience!! Great permanent exhibits, and several temporary ones that change up a couple times a year. This month, they had a really cool Guinness Book of World Records - Science of Play exhibit in the main room! It was so much fun!! There were dozens of different games and challenges for kids of all ages to interact with. I highly, highly recommend going to the 8K Planetarium movie "Our Place in Space" !!! (Tickets are $10-$12 each, but its worth it!)

Check with nice people at the Lodge for trail maps and more.

We love this state park. Lots of wildlife, good views of the lake, clean and quiet. If you go up the hill and visit the Lodge, you can take some great pictures. Only drawback is the Wifi is very spotty.

Wonderful place. Our great granddaughter is two. We thought she would be afraid. She loved the animals. She didn't want to leave. This is a day trip worth taking.

Absolutely an experience! Had allot of feelings about this place but I can say it was really fun. I won't be going back because of the long horns scratching my car I buffed out what I could but it's not worth getting more. Also the long horns were very aggressive and the horns got a little too close for comfort once coming in the car window about half a foot from my passengers chest. Would love to do it again but the scratches from the long horns is not worth it. All that being said I'm glad I went because it was truly a real up close experience with exotic animals!

Had an awesome time here with the family. The kids loved feeding the animals. We're sorry It took us as long as it did to check this place out. We'd definitely recommend paying them a visit!

Joe Wheeler State Park

Lakeside park offers a restaurant, cottages & plenty of space for gatherings & getaways.

Slide 1 of 3

The part of the park that has been rebuilt since the tornado hit is really nice. All new roads and bath houses. The sites are gravel and large and relatively level.

I love the park but the old lady at the campground office when i checked in is not friendly, she is rude! After greeting her good afternoon and told her "I'm here to get my car tag for camp tonight". She just blurted "what name!" - No good old Southern greeting like "afternoon, how are you?"....just looked at me asked for my name! Ma'am just because you see I'm different that you assume I'm stupid! You made me feel ignorant and stupid...anyway, I love the campground and the park...I just don't like the Old lady in the campground office!

This is the second year we've taken our family to Joe Wheeler for the weekend. Last year we stayed at the lodge, but this year the kids (adults) stayed in the lodge and we rented a cottage so that we could have a gathering place. The cottage and location is beautiful. The only problem is that the beds are not comfortable at all. Check in was easy, all of the staff was very friendly and accommodating. We had a great weekend!

A large, covered pavilion with restrooms is available for groups of up to 500.

A place that offers almost all of the outdoor recreational activities you can think of, the Point Mallard Park has been a destination for fun and excitement since 1970. Activities such as golfing, skating, and camping are just some of the things you can do at this venue.

The water park section had a lot more than I expected. Wave pool, tube slides, lazy river, and splash pads and kiddie areas. This is a great deal for weekdays, $10 for adults. Prices for food and drinks isn’t bad at all. We will definitely be bringing the kids more this summer.

My family loves to come here during the summer...It has something for all age groups. Im not a fan of their restroom/changing areas but what do you expect at a waterpark where everyone is wet and sweaty. Other than the restrooms I would say its pretty clean. I love the option of renting a cabana by the lazy river, it came in handy with the younger kids wanting a spot out of the sun to take a break and it was only $20.00 to rent for the entire day. Dont waist your money renting floats because we were told (by the lady at the rental station) there were abandoned floats all over the park so if you see some just setting around that nobody has been using just help yourself.

Seemed like a lot of money for a mediocre water park. Can't wear goggles in anything and the locker rentals were a joke. We paid $8 for a locker that had the lock broken off and someone else's things in it. We were told they couldn't do a refund! The lifeguards definitely seemed whistle happy and eager to yell at people. After waiting for 45 minutes due to lightning, we ended up leaving.

Ave Maria Grotto

Sights & Landmarks

Religious destination

Selection of 125 religious & historic miniature buildings crafted by a monk in a 4-acre park.

Slide 1 of 3

The grotto is a classic folk art spot associated with a monastery in Alabama everyone should visit. The art is laid out along a loop through an old quarry. There are plaques with information on each. The path is paved with significant hills going in and coming out. The gift shop offers fresh baked goods made at the monastery. Definitely walk over to the chapel to join the monks chanting prayers.

First time visiting and loved it. Beautiful little garden! We enjoyed it very much. They also offer discount for first responders. Definitely recommend getting there early before it gets busy. Most likely will go back to visit. Have a camera ready because you will want memories from this place.

After hearing about this place for years, I finally checked it out. The miniature structures are absolutely gorgeous and so ingenious. You've never seen anything like it because the materials are so eclectic. Glass, shells, jewelry, various stones and pieces of broken plates and pottery are all combined to form these extraordinarily unique replicas. Brother Joseph Zoettl created all of these structures by himself, before the internet and without formal artistic training. Just incredible. I also bought some cinnamon raisin bread baked by the monks. It's yummy!

Named after George Barber himself, who was a visionary who loved the speed and thrill of a great car, notching up 63 Porsche wins under his built. Barber started collecting sports cars that later expanded into motorcycles – and these days, the collection has grown so vast that it’s notched up the official Guinness World Record for the largest motorcycle collection in the world.

Let’s get something straight — I’m definitely not a car/motorcycle aficionado. Yet even I couldn’t help but be impressed by the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, an enormous and extremely popular museum and racetrack park owned by gazillionaire (I’m guessing here) George Barber, whom I’m now determined to meet in person some day after having personally made the pilgrimage to see his collection of dinosaurs in Elberta, Alabama. George Barber is an extremely wealthy lover of dinosaurs and therefore someone I Need to Know.

Founded by race driver George Barber, the Vintage Motorsports Museum is a result of his passion for cars and motorcycles. First opened in 1995 with an assortment of vintage motorcycles, the collection soon gained notoriety after several vehicles were lent to the Guggenheim Museum for a major exhibit, "The Art of the Motorcycle," which also toured to Chicago and Bilbao in Spain. Barber continued to grow his collection as he developed a large complex that is now home to a 2.38-mile racetrack and a proving ground.

What does a former Porsche race car driver do when he retires?. He starts collecting and restoring vintage motorcycles. George Barber won 63 races in the 1960s, and when he retired, he decided to put a bit of his passion into building a museum for other speed enthusiasts.

The park portion of the venue is home to a 740-acre multi-purpose racing facility. It was built by George Barber and is the site of the IndyCar Series Grand Prix of Alabama. The museum portion houses the history of motorcycles in a way that no other venue ever has.

Home to the world’s largest motorcycle collection, Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum is a must-see. The museum opened in the early 1990s, and has since grown to include bikes from around the world. Each has been preserved and displayed for public enjoyment.

The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum has the world’s largest motorcycle collection. In addition to motorcycles, you will also find classic cars, race cars, motorbikes, and a whole lot more.

Still absolutely in awe of the place. As a motorcycle enthusiast, there was so much to see. Everything was placed well so pictures weren't crowded or difficult to take. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and the museum clean and nice. I would have liked to spent several days there as there is just so much to see. Will be a lasting memory, and I highly recommend going.

Superb museum! Never a huge fan of motorcycles before I walked in, but one just can't help becoming one after walking out. The collection is unreal, going back to late 1800s, from all over the world to boot. Plus you can see a race, if they have one when you visit, which makes the place that much more memorable.

This place is mind boggling! So cool! I'm not particularly into motorcycles, but my buddy who I went on vacation with suggested we go there. I was amazed how much I thoroughly enjoyed myself. They have every kind of motorcycle imaginable, but also a large collection of boat motors, race cars, and antique cars.

DeSoto Caverns

Amusement park

Nature & Parks

Activity-packed park offering cave tours & a light show plus wall climbing & games.

Slide 1 of 3

Coming from someone who's only ever visited one other cave (Ruby falls) I have to say that the main cavern is a sight to behold it felt like I was in some rock cathedral. The tour guide gave us ample time to enjoy the space, I did not feel like we were rushed at all. The history behind DeSoto caverns is somewhat interesting, but overall you're really there for the view. I would highly recommend anyone who likes caves/caverns, to definitely give this one a go.

Great visit here today. We really enjoyed the cavern tour. Great new lazer show during the tour. The group was a little big in our opinion but the guide did well managing it. I think a smaller group would have made for a much better time. But it is a great time if your in the area.

we drove up today from the Columbus Ga Area.. about 2 hrs. let me say, I'm giving only 3 stars, but it may not be reflective of the location. I'll get to it. so.. overall, the Caverns park was clean, friendly and family friendly. it's attached to a campground I can't really comment on. it did look fairly nice from a distance. it's only getting three stars because it seemed most all the activities were targeting younger kids. ages 5/6 to maybe 12/13. not terribly exciting activities for slightly older kids. the prices for each activity, seemed a bit high, but I'm not sure how to lower them much and still make $$. a fine line there. We really did enjoy the cavern tour itself. it was a cool experience, and educational with some of the history associated with it. End thoughts.. if you are passing through the area, if you have young kids, or maybe grandkids, it might be worth the visit. if you have older kids, it's not really worth the stop, and not really worth driving more than an hour for. Again, not a bad place, but not worth the cost + traveling to, just for the cavern park. maybe if you're camping?

I can’t remember the last time I’d visited this place. It was busy and bustling on a early Saturday afternoon. The staff was cordial and friendly while accommodating customers. The exhibits were pretty cool and informative. Great place to spend an afternoon with the family. The Legos exhibit was my favorite! I love how they incorporated local talent exhibits. Awesome job!

The science museum is an awesome place for a day trip, and the kids loved it. I'm very surprised that it was not busier. It was practically empty. Our kids loved being able to pet the sting rays and the tiny town. We had 1 senior, 2 adults, 2 kids, and parking, and it was around $75. They change features out, so there's something new every few months.

Plenty to do here. There are stairs & an elevator if needed. There is a small food cafe but it closed before I could try it. You will get a token at the counter if you used the parking deck & it's like a dollar off the rate.

Of all the places to visit in Birmingham, probably the very best known is the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. And for good reason, it is one of the best places to visit while you’re there for numerous reasons. It reminds us of our horrific past which, while heart breaking, is crucial to making sure history does not repeat itself.

I consider Birmingham’s Civil Rights Institute to be the cornerstone experience of any family trip to the city. My wife and I, a retired cop and nurse had the distinct pleasure of making the acquaintance of Marshay Webb, BCRI Operations Manager today. Sometimes it's hard to believe that these events occurred during our lifetimes ? It's a graphic illustration that it did. Soon my generation will be gone and the institutional knowledge will go with us. But your Museum will continue to share this knowledge. Thank you for letting us enjoy your beautiful interpretive Museum!

Fascinating and moving museum. The exhibits are thoughtful and well executed, and the facility well-designed for both education and reflection. The history here is both local and touched the world. Some of the other reviews on here are baffling. This isn't a theme park. It's not supposed to entertain you. Wouldn't recommend for younger kids; there's not much for them. Otherwise this is a must-visit in Birmingham.

I'm not from the USA and we drove though Alabama today and then visited this museum. And I found it incredibly beautiful yet also confrontational. The museum is very well done and builds up well. I am not an emotional person but this museum actually made me cry and I really needed a break halfway to process the Incredible horror that was (and perhaps still is) done to people. Especially considering what I saw driving through Alabama earlier today it made me angry about the injustice that still exists, the ignorance of people waving around their "confederate flags". But I was also really impressed with the strength of the people who where able to stand up for justice and equality in the way they did. The staff was super friendly and I would absolutely recommend to visit this museum. My only comment would be that there should be an expansion to display the ongoing struggle, and the gift shop could be improved too.

I love that this was a fun and easy hike up to from 5 points! I didn't get to go exploring the trails, just the museum and statue, but still enjoyed it quite a lot. One $6 ticket allows you into the museum and a ride up the elevator to the feet of the statue (or you also have the option to walk the staircase *inside* the pillar, which is absolutely what I did!). The museum is nicely done, approximately 7-8 rooms with the history of the town, culture, community, and struggles. It also gives a history of why this spot was so important to Birmingham. I would have loved to see more of the cave aspect, but I can only imagine it's not as safe or stable... You get a great overview of the city from even the base of the statue! There are binoculars to use, and a little drink and snack cart (with adult beverages!) to treat yourself after that hike. I loved that they had this really neat bicycle tuning tool near the parking lot! I've never seen anything like it! It had everything you could need to fix anything with your bike. How thoughtful!

Small area and average park. Sufficient parking space available. You can see the entire downtown area from the Vulcan statue which is accessible via lift but you need to buy tickets for that. Good location for a morning walk or evening gathering. I didn't see any outlets inside but there is a museum and a small souvenir store inside.

Unexpected, simple beauty. Great museum to learn some history of Birmingham, the Civil Rights movement, how the Vulcan came to be....even Coke and Pepsi. The park grounds are well manicured. Great views of the city can be had here without even climbing to the Vulcan's highest level. Being able to take the stairs or the glass elevator up the statue is a great option. You are only able to get to the foot of the Vulcan which is still extremely high. Overall a great park.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this park. From the amazing, helpful and accommodating staff to the landscape and activities. We tried to explore as much as possible in our 3 day, 2 night stay and it simply wasn't enough time! Fantastic hiking trails, equine facilities, kayak/paddleboards, camping, the wildlife center. The road construction before you reach the park was an annoyance, but after straightening out our directions it was smooth sailing! We will be back!

A beautiful place. You can go right up to the peaville waterfall. I loved my experience. I am planning to come back and camp closer to the summertime. It's $5 a person, and maps are $1. But that was well worth the v experience I had.

This is an incredible park to visit! It’s HUGE and includes horseback riding, a golf course, playground, kayak & paddle boat rental, swimming area, and more! There were very nice bathroom facilities at all parking areas. Gorgeous views. Drive through road and tons of hiking trails with bridges. Wish we had more than a few hours, I think you could spend several days exploring and still not see it all! Stickers, magnets, T-shirt’s and stuffed animals at the park office, but very small selections.

My kids love it.. it became our summer spot. Free; drinks, sanitizer and sunscreen Great environment, clean areas, amazing food and awesome staff. I only wish they can offer family season passes.

The park was very clean , fully staffed with courteous and respectful workers, and the rides were a lot of fun. The live shows every hour were exciting and entertaining. I would have given less stars only because of all the COVID changes but that is no fault of the park. Just know that there is a cashless system in place ( but you can load a card at kiosks throughout the park as well as the entrance) I was sad to find there were hardly any "shops" open along main street as well as our favorite "old-timey"picture store. I was also looking forward to the newest ride and had no idea it was not opened yet (rocket racer) I really wish that Buzz Saw Falls or similar would come back. I also missed seeing the General as I left .I had hoped to share a picture taken with my grandchildren the year she and her son opened the park. It's only getting better! We usually make the trip once a summer but I may consider the season pass. Great price for everything that is included. (Beverages, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, and parking) A definite family park for all ages!

Alabama Adventures is lots of fun for the family young or old. If you're in need of anything to do while it's hot out go cool off in Birmingham AL.

The A-Day game for the University of Alabama was a bit wet, but awesome. Everything in place but a possible worthy opponent. They play each other of course for the media, fans etc. Impressive Stadium. The sound system can lift you off your bum.

A really cool stadium. With all of the alumni money flowing in, you would expect a really nice stadium. The grounds were well kept and maintained. As expected, the tide fans can be a little mouthy at times, but this is with any home team crowd. Had a great time here and would attend games in the future.

Love the whole place. Sat in the nose bleeds directly above the “Million Dollar Band” and they were still good seats. We were able to get a close view of Nick Saben and the team leave the Hotel Capstone. Saw the Bama percussion warm up and had a blast the whole time.

I always find myself having a great time at Golden Moon Silver Star in Pearl River I always enjoy the friendly staff The Establishment and the large variety of slots and card tables available they offer so much more than other casinos that I've been around that's around here and as long as they will have me I will continue coming to Pearl River and enjoy playing at the Silver Star or at the golden and the food there is always a great feature at many of their restaurants inside the casino. I actually enjoyed a nice dinner at the buffet this past time and hope to try all the different places they have to offer. Thanks and hope to see tall soon.

We stopped by here before heading over to the Golden moon with $200. Our goto was the playboy machines betting max. Sadly I think we should of let the truck stay on, the $200 went quick, the bonus rounds do not pay much I think we where winning more from just spinning outside the bonus rounds. Just walking around you don't see too many people winning over $100 regardless of what they are betting so that prompt us to try the golden moon out. Decent service on the drinks outside of that I wouldn't expect your money to last long here.

The best hotel rooms around my husband and I had a 2 bed suite and it was everything I would love to come back and get another 2 bed suite
