Passion fruit price per kg Australia

Passionfruit growers are pleading with supermarkets to more than halve the price of single pieces of fruit, to give consumers incentive to help them move a 'tsunami' of product.

Key points:

  • Farmers appeal to supermarkets to discount single passionfruit to help them move an "unusual" oversupply of winter fruit
  • Drought, hail and storms have forced passionfruit prices up over the last 12–18 months
  • Growers want the four in five Australian households who do not buy passionfruit to try it

After months of short supply and high prices, Passionfruit Australia vice-president, Jane Richter, said "unusually large" quantities of the fruit were hitting the market at exactly the time that cold winter weather had severely affected demand.

"We've got a tsunami of passionfruit," she said.

"I had a message from our president this morning, who's based in northern New South Wales, to say that their local transport company was literally so backed up that they ran out of pallets."

Tough times

The winter glut comes after a stressful 18 months for farmers who have battled everything from too much rain and hail causing disease to severe drought.

Ms Richter, who farms in the Glass House Mountains, has worked for weeks to try to alert supermarkets of the impending oversupply.

"I understand for retailers, it's been one of those crops where they can get it one week but they can't get it the next day, I get that people are frustrated with us as an industry," she said.

"But all of those [climatic] conditions have conspired, so that every single growing region has got a huge lump of fruit coming through the supply chain right now."

Ms Richter said by selling individual pieces of fruit for about 50 cents, supermarkets could encourage the four in five Australian households who do not buy fresh passionfruit, to try it.

"We need people to get out there and rediscover passionfruit, we need retailers to get behind us and do some really crazy hot specials, put them at the front of the store," she said.

"That's a fair price for the farm and that's a fair price for us," Mr Federer said.

"The supermarkets have priced themselves out of the market — they charge way too much.

"We sell about 250 kilograms of passionfruit a week.

"We sell them to other shops on the Sunshine Coast, we sell them to cafes and juice bars and we tell people at this price you should take them home and freeze them because when they're out of season, you just pull them out like an ice cube and have them anytime you want."
