Galo and Lio-hen are two 10 minute ONA(s) that are to be watched before Promare.
They both give a little background into the characters and world you will see when going into the film.
If you're a fan of Trigger/Gainax, you will hear some familiar voices.

STORY
As it's a 10 minute precursor to a 2 hour film, there isn't much story to be seen, just a basic scenario to see our characters' personality and how they react.

ART
The art is pretty good, like really nice, and as of writing this i have not seen the film yet, but i assume that the art in this film is the ...

This is the first part of the two-part prequel to Studio Trigger's (first) movie Promare, centering around the character Galo Thymos, the rookie recruit in Promepolis' firefighting unit "Burning Rescue".

Story:
You get about as much as you'd expect from a 10 minute character prequel - it sets the ideologies Galo and the (typically) crazy setting for the movie nicely though, as you might expect from Trigger.

Art:
Since this is only a prequel, I think there wasn't put as much effort into the art here as compared to the full movie - it's still your recognizable Studio Trigger animation though, with their contrastful color palettes and quirky character ...

I accidentally did it and now i guess it was the best experience possible.

Believe me and thank me later.

The first 22 min of the movie is the opening sequel, and these OVAs (Galo-hen and Lio-hen) are perfect to explain what you just watched in the begin of the movie, AFTER you already started it.

Watching in the chronological order spoils a bit the introduction of the movie. It will lose a lot of impact.

And watching the movie first basically turn the OVAs disposable.

Thankfully i didn't watch the OVAs in the MAL order, it would spoils the way i faced the first events:

Watching the movie first probably is the main choice, since the movie is on popular streaming services as Prime Video, while the OVAs don't.

But i as said, these OVAs are perfect to explain just what you need to know in the right moment before the plot advances.

And i realized this by total chance: "Wow, what sequence was that... oh, i forgot to check on MAL if this movie is part of a series or anything (pause). Let me see, oh, there are two previous short OVAs in chronological order, okay, let me watch them now"

Should I watch Galo hen before Promare?

Are Lio and Galo canon?

Canon. Lio was first seen by Galo as a terrorist with an agenda to burn cities, as Galo was first seen by Lio as another supporter of Kray Foresight, who he despised. Their first encounter ended with a fight, during which Galo unintentionally breaks Lio's mask off, and comments on how young he is, to Lio's annoyance.

There is no denying that Lio Fotia has an androgynous appearance. Why, some would even argue that his delicate frame can easily be mistaken for a girl's body. A lot of fans (who watched the trailer for the first time) assumed Lio was a girl until he opened his mouth and a man's voice came out of it.
