As a cynical and suspicious shopper, the old adage “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is” has been my guiding principle when perusing the internet for deals. When I heard about the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer, my guard was up. A hot air round brush that promises a quick, effortless, and affordable salon-quality blowout and has garnered over 300,000 positive reviews (on the original model) definitely sounded way too good to be true. 

But, as an equally curious consumer, I’ll try anything once – especially when it comes to products with such universal acclaim and a low price tag. When I first learned that hair dryer/brush/styler/volumizer hybrids exist, I wasn’t desperate enough for better hair days to pony up $550 on a Dyson Airwrap but was most certainly desperate enough to purchase a refurbished bargain Revlon blow dryer brush from a stranger on the internet. 

What is the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer? 

The Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer boasts a superabundance of benefits: it can style, dry, and volumize hair in a single step (as the name suggests) with 30% less frizz and reduced damage. The non-detachable oval brush is designed to smooth hair, while the round edges add an extra voluminous “oomph” to tresses. The tufted bristles with nylon pins pledge to detangle any hair type, and the tool has three heat and speed settings (including a Cool option) for styling flexibility using 1100 watts of power. 

What sold me was the promise of cutting down hair drying time and heat damage due to its innovative airflow vents and Ionic Technology. Unlike conventional hair dryers, it’s supposed to be effective yet cool enough to place closer to the scalp for lift. 

For less than $40 on sale, this tool claimed to pack a lot of punch, and I needed to find out if it was the real deal. 

I’ll start with this disclaimer: I am not a hair stylist. In fact, I’m likely the farthest you could get from a salon expert. Whether it be my lack of dexterity or patience, I’ve never quite gotten the hang of a curling iron, straightener, or insert-name-of-trendy-TikTok-tool-here. In the beauty world, hairstyling is my Achilles' heel – I can finesse a flawless winged eyeliner without a mirror and perfectly color-match a foundation to my skin tone, but I cannot put a roller in my hair to save my life. 

I can only speak to my hair type here, which has luckily never caused me too much of a hassle. My naturally straight, medium-length hair has always been fairly manageable despite years of bleaching and dying it to smithereens, breakage from ratty clip-in extensions, and forgoing trims far too often. But, like many, as I’ve gotten riper in age my mane has become thinner, flatter, and duller (youth is wasted on the young, right?). 

Despite countless hours watching YouTube tutorials, consulting with my hairstylist, and shelling out money for high-end tools and products over the years, I came to a point where I just accepted my fate of having stringy, Gollum-adjacent strands that lay lifeless upon my skull. That is until I used this Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer, which quite literally blew new life into my hair.

As skeptical as I was about this alleged “magic” tool, I immediately understood the hype upon using it just once. For less than $40, the Revlon One-Step hair dryer brush made me instantly regret all the time I ever spent drying and pitifully attempting to style my hair – not only did it cut my drying time in half (from roughly 12 minutes to seven), it left my hair volumized at the root, fuller-looking, shiny and as soft as my pet bunny's fur. Being the impatient gal I am, I chucked out the instruction manual and bypassed any potentially helpful video tutorials upon unboxing, and simply (sloppily) went at it, running the brush through my damp hair on the high setting. Apparently, that is all it takes to get a salon-grade blowout at home. 

After drying my hair from root to tip on the highest setting, I worked the round brush down sections of my hair on a lower setting, rotating the brush and pulling strands through the bristles to further style it. The results were impressive: in about 11 minutes I had sleek, volumized hair that would typically take me about 25 minutes of drying, round brushing, straightening and pumping with loads of product to achieve. It took only a few seconds for the tool to heat up, and it never got hot enough to scorch my scalp, even when I put the brush right up against it. 

The tool is multipurpose, eliminating the need to use both hands like you do when rotating a hair dryer, round brush and clips with the deftness of an octopus. Aside from relieving my arms of heavy lifting with its lightweight design, the Revlon One-Step hair dryer brush is compact enough to store in my studio apartment-sized bathroom while also clearing my precious limited space of other (now unnecessary) tools. 

The Cons

• Noticeable breakage

• Bulky size 

With consistent use on my thin (read: fragile) hair, this tool appeared to cause more breakage with the dual bristles that often tugged on my tresses. Despite its claims to reduce heat damage, having a hot tool directly on my hair has prompted me to douse my locks in heat protectant spray. In its defense, the One-Step hair dryer cuts down on overall styling time and proves to be an effective substitute for equally-damaging straighteners and curling irons, so it has likely saved my hair from damage in the long run. 

Compared to my normal hair dryer, the Revlon One-Step seems to be aggressively louder. Perhaps that’s because it’s being placed right up against my cranium, but if you’re looking for a peaceful morning hair routine this won’t do you any favors. But, if you’re trying to be jolted awake before you head off to work – the One-Step hair dryer brush will definitely do the trick! 

While the hair dryer brush does eradicate the need to multitask a bunch of different tools and is fairly lightweight, the design was still bulkier than I would have preferred and eventually tired out my weak arms. But, if you’re willing to shell out a few more bucks, Revlon recently released a limited edition One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer Titanium Max Edition which has a smaller barrel (2.5 inches compared to the original’s 4.2 inches) and is plated with titanium instead of copper to heat up faster and cut down use time even further.  

Is the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer worth it?

After owning this hair dryer brush for a year, I can confidently say that it’s become my holy grail hair tool, and the quality of my blowout has not diminished with consistent use. As a total dummy when it comes to my hair, the Revlon One-Step truly is a fool-proof way for me to achieve professional-like results.

After consulting with my hair stylist, she recommended using it only once hair is already 75% dry to reduce breakage and damage. So for everyday touch-ups and styling, this tool is fantastic, while using it to fully dry sopping wet hair and style too often may cause damage down the road (as daily use of any hot tools would). Because of this, I still keep my conventional hair dryer handy, so the one-step process has become more of a two-step for me.  

Overall, I would sing my praises for the Revlon One-Step hair dryer from the rooftop – it is indeed worth the hype and is proof that sometimes things that seem too good to be true are actually that good.
