Rising of the Shield Hero season 2 trailer

With the finale of The Rising of the Shield Hero's second season is fast approaching, Crunchyroll has dropped a trailer to hype anime fans.

The trailer, which is available on the streaming service's official YouTube account, provides a look back at the past two seasons of story content; as an isekai series, The Rising of the Shield Hero follows protagonist Naofumi, who is transported to a high fantasy world in order to serve as one of its four Cardinal Heroes and protect the land and people against interdimensional monsters. The first episode of the anime's second season is also available on Crunchyroll's YouTube channel.

Writer Aneko Yusagi originally serialized The Rising of the Shield Hero on the user-generated novel site Shōsetsuka ni Narō, but publisher Media Factor acquired the series in 2013 and has published the light novels since. There are currently twenty-two volumes and over 6 million copies have been sold in Japan.

Kinema Citrus, the studio behind Made in Abyss and Black Bullet, produced the first season of the anime adaptation of The Rising of the Shield Hero, which initially aired its 25 episodes between January and June 2019. While the show did ignite controversy in North America for its utilization of a false rape accusation and depictions of slavery within its plot, it went on to gain a devoted fan following and was generally well-received by critics. The character Raphtalia actually won the Best Girl category at the 2020 Crunchyroll Anime Awards.

For Season 2, DR Movie co-produced The Rising of the Shield Hero alongside Kinema Citrus. While several members of the creative team from the first season returned to work on the second season, including writer Keigo Koyanagi (Sirius the Jaeger) and character designer Masahiro Suwa (Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance), Masato Jinbo (Restaurant to Another World) replaced Takao Abo (Scorching Ping Pong Girls) as director. Moreover, several voice actors like Keigo Koyanagi, who plays Naofumi, and Asami Seto, who voices Raphtalia, reprised their roles for the new season. The second season of The Rising of the Shield Hero also introduced viewers to many new characters. This includes Ost Hourai, the humanoid familiar of the Spirit Tortoise, and Rishia Ivyred, a timid wizard.

As the finale trailer points out, both Season 1 and 2 of The Rising of the Shield Hero are available to stream on Crunchyroll. A third season has been greenlit, but no premiere date has been announced.
