Samsung top load washer drain pump test

The function of the drain pump is to circulate the water around and to drain the water out, of the machine. If you are finding that the water is not being drained away, it could be the drain pump that is the cause.

Firstly, just to check you are on the right path, here are the warning signs that your drain pump is broken:

  • You can't hear the pump when it’s trying to drain the water out
  • The pump makes a squealing noise when emptying
  • You can hear a low humming sound when on spin cycle but the water doesn’t drain
  • The washing machine fills up with water as normal
  • If the water is drained the Spin cycle still works as normal

Before going ahead and replacing the drain pump, we would like to mention a few checks that You can make to other parts of your washing machine - that could also be causing the problem. You can start by having a look at the filter to make sure that there’s no debris or damage to it. You can also do the same with the pump cavity behind the filter.

If the pump is running another thing to check is the drain hose, as over time it can suffer from blockages. After these various checks, If you put the machine through another wash and it still isn’t draining or circulating the water, then the chances are you’re going to have to replace the pump.

If you do need to replace the drain pump, but are unsure where to start, there’s no need to panic. We’ll talk you through how to successfully replace the drain pump without damaging your washing machine.

This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar.

It is also possible that the hose connecting the drain pump to the washing machine has gotten clogged as well. Again, the most common sources of these clogs include articles of clothing and small toys. Therefore, you need to check the pockets of all clothing items thoroughly to make sure they do not get clogged in the drain system.

Similar to the drain pump, you should be able to remove the hoses of the washing machine as well. You may need to use a snake device, plunging it through the hose to remove any obstructions that might be present. Once you are confident you have removed everything, you should reattach the hose and see if you can get it to work again. Hopefully, this cleared out the clock. If it did not, you may need to replace the hose. Fortunately, washing machine hoses are not that expensive.

Step 3: The Door Lock Motor Is Bad

Another possible reason why your Samsung washing machine might not be draining is that it believes the door is not working appropriately. Your Samsung washing machine is not going to start operating until it is confident the door has been completely closed. If the Samsung washing machine believes the washing machine is still open, it is not going to operate, which means it will not drain.

There are two possible reasons why your Samsung washing machine may believe the door is still open. The first has to do with the door lock motor. The door lock motor can fail either electrically or mechanically. Take a closer look at the door lock. Look for any signs of damage. You may see areas where the motor has been stripped, or it may even look rusted over.

You may even need access to a multimeter to test the door lock motor itself. Check and see if there is current going through the door lock. If there is still a strong current going through, then this is a sign the door lock is good. You may need to move on to a separate area.

If you are not detecting any current going through the door lock motor, then it needs to be replaced. Again, take a look and see if the cost of replacing the door lock motor is worth it.

Step 4: Check the Lid Switch Assembly

If the door lock motor is fine, it is time to move on to the lid switch assembly. The lid switch assembly is responsible for preventing the washer from spinning when the lid is open. When you close the lid, the lid switch assembly should give the washer permission to spin and drain. If the lid switch assembly is defective, the washing machine may believe the lid is still open, so it will not drain.

You need to take a look at the lid switch assembly and see if it is operating appropriately. To do so, you need to have access to a multimeter. If the lid switch does not have enough continuity, it will not work properly. Therefore, you may need to replace the entire lid switch assembly itself.

Step 5: Check the Water Pump Belt

The vast majority of new washing machines do not have a water pump belt; however, if you are using an older washing machine, you may still have one. Take a look at the manual and see if you have a water pump belt. If you have one, this could be the reason why the washing machine is not draining appropriately.

If the washing machine water belt pump is worn out or broken, the washer will not work appropriately. You may need to replace the water pump belt if it shows signs of excessive wear and tear. Your manual should let you know exactly what type of water pump belt you need.

Step 6: Investigate the Coin Trap

Finally, if you have a really old washing machine, there is a chance the coin trap may be the issue. The point rap is responsible for trapping any foreign objects that might otherwise end up in the drain. You need to clean the coin trap periodically if you have one. As the name suggests, it has been specifically designed to trap coins.

There are a number of objects you may find in the coin trap. This could include coins, small toys, and even small articles of clothing that may have degraded over time. If the coin trap is clogged, the washing machine will not drain, so you need to make sure you clean it thoroughly.

The coin trap is designed to catch small dedicates, jewelry and coins, so they do not cause clogs deeper in the system.

You may even want to use a powerful cleaning solution to remove any crime that could be on the edge of the coin trap. That way, it will not get clogged so easily. If you need help finding, accessing, or cleaning the coin trap, you may want to reach out to a professional who can help you.

Make sure you go through this list of causes and see if you can get your Samsung washing machine to drain appropriately once again.

Fix a Samsung Washing Machine That Won’t Drain

These are just a few of the most common reasons why your Samsung washing machine might not be draining appropriately. You need to take a closer look at the drain pump, and you need to make sure there is not a clog present in the washing machine itself. You may also want to take a look at the door motor and the lid switch assembly.

If you have to replace a part of your Samsung washing machine, you may want to reach out to a professional who can help you. That way, you can figure out how expensive this is going to be, how much a new washing machine is going to be, and whether it is worth it for you. Finally, if you maintain your washing machine appropriately, you should be able to minimize the risk of developing issues with your Samsung washing machine.

Even though your Samsung washing machine probably has a reputation for being durable, you still need to take care of it. That way, you can get as many years of use out of it as possible and you can reduce your chances of having to go through an expensive repair process.
