Songs for the End of the World is a loving, vivid, tenderly felt novel about men, women, and a possible apocalypse. I couldn't put it down." –Sean Michaels, author of Us Conductors and The Wagers NATIONAL BESTSELLER. An immersive, deeply engaging, and hopeful novel about the power of human connection in a time of crisis, as the bonds of love, family, and duty are tested by an impending catastrophe. Named a Book of the Year by the Globe and Mail, Quill & Quire, 49th Shelf, and a Book You Should Read by Maclean's and Chatelaine. How quickly he'd forgotten a fundamental truth: the closer you got to the heart of a calamity, the more resilience there was to be found. This is the story of a handful of people living through an unfolding catastrophe. Elliot is a first responder in New York, a man running from past failures and struggling to do the right thing. Emma is a pregnant singer preparing to headline a benefit concert for victims of a growing outbreak—all while questioning what kind of world her child is coming into. Owen is the author of a bestselling novel with eerie similarities to the real-life crisis, and as fact and fiction begin to blur, he must decide whether his lifelong instinct for self-preservation has been worth the cost. As we discover these characters' ties to one another—and to the mystery of the so-called ARAMIS Girl—what emerges is an extraordinary web of connection and community that reveals none of us is ever truly alone. Brilliantly told by an unforgettable chorus of voices, Saleema Nawaz's glittering novel is a moving and hopeful meditation on what we owe to ourselves and to each other. It reminds us that disaster can bring out the best in people—and that coming together may be what saves us in the end.

Top reviews from AustraliaThere are 0 reviews and 0 ratings from Australia Top reviews from other countries3.0 out of 5 stars Tried to put too much into one book Reviewed in Canada on 14 October 2020 Verified Purchase The book isn't bad, it kept me reading it. However, there were way too many irrelevant characters and story lines, she would have had a much better book if she hadn't tried to stuff so many things into it. The interconnections among the characters also got a bit tedious after a while. Also some parts of the book were written much better than others, it seems that parts of the book started out as short stories, written over a period of years. So it was ok, and very timely because of being published just before a real pandemic, but not great. 5.0 out of 5 stars Timely... Reviewed in Canada on 19 May 2020 Verified Purchase This was a good read. Enjoyed the character development and the intertwined stories; sort of like seven degrees of separation by a virus if you will. The timetable at the beginning and the names were helpful to set me straight when I got confused. No Hollywood ending. Personally I like that. It’s more real in many ways. 4.0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this Reviewed in Canada on 2 August 2021 Verified Purchase Such an interesting read in the midst of a global pandemic. The author has done a terrific job of portraying multiple characters dealing with events very similar to what we are experiencing. Most importantly, it is uplifting. Well done. 4.0 out of 5 stars Timely novel anticipating the 2020 covid 19 pandemic Reviewed in Canada on 15 September 2020 Verified Purchase This was a very well crafted account of a pandemic presentient of the current Covid 19 pandemic . It follows the first hand experience of "Elliot" a police officer who is at "ground zero" of the pandemic and the impact it has on his relationships, and like. I really enjoyed the introduction of his parents who were philosophers and how the meaning of life was explored. There is a curious twist at the end(spoiler alert) which provides redemption and hope for humanity and the future. This is one of the best books I have read this year 4.0 out of 5 stars Good read Reviewed in Canada on 24 May 2020 Verified Purchase Enjoyed reading this book, immersing me in stories that seem to reflect what is happening now. Two points I take away from this book. The first, that, being isolated, the toughest thing is that we miss “the affable friction of other lives bumping up against ours”. And the second is that isolation strips away all the extraneous concerns, paring it down to the bare minimum. Enables us to think clearly and “live lightly”. |
