The Department issues driver licenses valid for up to eight years to Texas residents 18 years of age and older. Most driver licenses and identification cards can be renewed up to two years before and after the expiration date. You have several convenient options to renew your Texas driver license or identification card during this time, including online, telephone, mail, or in person at your local driver license office. In Texas, your address on a driver license or ID card must be changed within 30 days after moving to your new residence. There are three ways you can request a replacement driver license and change your address: online, mail-in, and in person.

Renewal Requirements for Driver Licenses and ID Cards

You are eligible to renew your DL or ID online if:

  • You completed your last renewal in person at a Driver License Office.
  • Your DL or ID card either expires in less than two years or is less than two years past the expiration date.
  • You are at least 30 days from turning 18 years of age and your DL is a provisional license.
  • Your browser supports 128-bit encryption.
  • You are a U.S. citizen.
  • Your Social Security Number is on file with DPS.

If you have a DL and ID card, you must visit a Driver License Office to surrender one of the cards before you are eligible for online transactions. Learner licenses are not eligible to renew online.
 

Additional Renewal Requirements for Driver Licenses Only

You are eligible to renew your DL online if:

  • You are 78 or younger. People 79 or older must renew in person.
  • You are renewing a Class C, M, or CM license.
  • There is no change in your vision or physical or mental condition since your last renewal that would affect your ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • You have no outstanding traffic tickets or warrants, and your license is not suspended or revoked.

Additional Renewal Requirements for Commercial Driver Licenses Only

You are eligible to renew your CDL online if: 

  • You are 78 or younger. People 79 or older must renew in person.
  • Your CDL does not contain a hazardous materials endorsement. 
  • There is no change in your vision or physical or mental condition since your last renewal that would affect your ability to operate a motor vehicle. 
  • If required, a valid, unexpired Medical Certificate is on file.
  • You have no outstanding traffic tickets or warrants, and your license is not suspended, revoked, or disqualified.

Replacement or Change of Address Requirements for Licenses and ID Cards

You are eligible to replace or change the address for your DL, CDL, or ID card online if:

  • Your DL, CDL or ID card is not expired. If your card is expired, you can only change your address if you also renew at the same time. You cannot replace an expired card.
  • You are at least 18 years of age and your driver license is not a provisional or learner license.
  • Your browser supports 128-bit encryption.
  • Your Social Security Number is on file with DPS.

Replacement or Change of Address Requirements for Licenses Only

  • You can replace or change an address for a DL or CDL online if your license is not suspended, revoked, or disqualified.
     

Real ID Requirements for Driver Licenses and ID Cards

Starting May 3, 2023, you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant DL, CDL or ID card with a gold star, a valid passport, or U.S. military ID to travel by air in the U.S.

You may be eligible to renew or request a replacement REAL ID online:

  • If your card expires before May 3, 2023, don't worry. You will get a REAL ID the next time you renew. Check your eligibility to renew online here: www.texas.gov/dlrenewal
  • If your card expires after May 3, 2023, you have multiple options:
    • Do you have a passport? If so, you may choose to use that as your REAL ID credential
    • You can renew up to two years ahead of your expiration date or you can request a duplicate at Texas.gov. You will be provided a REAL ID compliant card.
  • If your card expires after May 2024, you have multiple options:
    • Do you have a passport? If so, you may choose to use that as your REAL ID credential
    • You can mail in a form to request a duplicate card, or request one at Texas.gov.
